21st defense by Louis, The fight raised $64,980.02 for the Army Emergency Relief Fund. Louis donated his entire purse of $36,146. Promoter Mike Jacobs and Madison Square Garden contributed $25,131.85, and Simon gave $3,012.17.
Simon was floored late in rounds two and five, and he was saved by the bell each time. Simon was dropped again early in the sixth round and counted out by referee Eddie Joseph. Simon protested the stoppage, insisting he was up at the count of nine.
This was Louis' first professional fight without trainer Jack Blackburn, who was hospitalized in Chicago. Blackburn would die the following month.

I thought Simon beat the count, and this was one of those disguised TKO's. No matter. He had taken enough to knock out an elephant, and it was only going to get worse. You can debate who the greatest heavyweight champion of all time was, but Louis was unquestionably the most dominant.

Truly The Greatest Of All Time !!! And yes My favorite Fighter of All Time. I would trade meeting all the famous fighters and celebrities I have met to just have met Joe Louis. When I was still an amateur and fighting in Vegas for the first time when I saw the statue of Joe Louis at Caesars Palace my eyes developed a leak. And I am not ashamed to admit that. He was and is and will always be my favorite fighter.

He actually got a long count, from the time he was floored to the time the referee picked up the count it was five seconds.! He was taking a beating and was saved from serious injuries later in life.! But he was better than Canera .! Abe’s protest came after his head cleared obviously 🙄.!

Joe was very methodical and efficient no wasted energy or movement the exact opposite of Ali, and his show boating, and dancing that was impossible to keep up.
