EastEnders is a popular UK soap opera that has been on television since the 1980s. At the end of each episode there is a dramatic moment or cliffhanger just before the end titles. The theme music starts during the dramatic moment and begins with a drum pattern (doof doof etc) which is instantly recognisable (it is basically unchanged since the programme began) and has become part of UK popular culture.

I haven't seen the show in probably 20 years and I still remembered it exactly as it sounded.. but doubted myself because no-one on the panel agreed. They did ask how many doofs _before_ the music starts, so the tenth wouldn't count in that case

Ten beats!? The piano (or synthesizer) hits with the last beat. Divided by two, for each “doof-doof”, leaves five “doof-doofs” (Maybe???) 😂😂😂😂 It is truly pure insanity to seriously consider such trivia; but, this is the type of sad alter-reality that our politicians deliver us all day and night! okey, as a non-British person, I had to google the theme song and play it... That's not the weird part that I did not know it. But I was totally expecting a "doof doof" to be some vocalized melody (i.e. some chant like lalala, shoo-wap shoo-wap, etc)... not an onomatopoeia for a drum. Is "doof" a standard onomatopoeia for drums in English? no "tum" "dum" or similar?

I don't think so. At the beginning of the discussion they had to clarify for each other what the "doof doof" was in reference to. It might just be the producer's preference (who wrote the card) and they figured it out from context clues.

No it's not standard for all drum sounds, just the Eastenders theme. For example, the drum noise you'd hear after a joke is written as ba dum tss.
