Only proles and the middle class care what people think of their records, etc. Anyone who is confident in their status couldn't care less what other people think. E.g., those at the bottom of the social ladder, as well as those at the top are supremely status confident. It is everyone else who is worried about what their peers (i.e. betters) will think of their abyssmal taste in art, music, whatever...

He’s being satirical, the object in his hand doesn’t matter as much as the sentiment he’s attaching to it. The whole point is that upper class people will try to find ways to distinguish themselves from the lower class through class signifiers.
@TheGeoScholar3 жыл бұрын
Joe Queenan's whole idea is to point out the idea of trying to evoke class, on how people try to look like they are one step ahead of everyone else. And as is indicated in the video, Joe Queenan is a satirist. Joe Queenan is discussing class in a satirical way. He's talking about people trying to "keep up with the Jones" and doing so in certain ways. I know "Tartufo Bianco" means "white truffle" and not engine fluid. However, Joe Queenan's point is that there is a desire to make something look like it's more than it is. And one of the ways this is done is by giving something a name in a different language.

This was such a great documentary. I wish it was easier to watch. You have to search all the separate segments and some of the segments I remember from the original I can’t find anywhere.

I would define this as, status, he is letting everyone know you are defined by the things you know of prestige. The class level that you have achieved.

It is clear that Americans surround themselves with things of prestige. They fancy these things and want to show them off. It is more of an entitlement, than that of a hard working person. We are defined in class levels by the high class the way we look, the people we know, where ones parents may or may not work, the things we eat, and high end stores, that are shopped at. Meaning, if I were a working class person, would I know what a certain fancy french cooking tool were? No. It is all about a social class, am I cool or am I not. I am in the elite in-crowd, they walk through doors that many have never seen before.They have of sense of entitled that makes them feel that they almost can do as they as because they above the normal lower working class person.

Sure, by eating e.g. frozen pizza you can stop your hunger without having to peel any vegetables and without cooking all different ingredients in different pods but is this healthy and sustainable? Not at all! The problem with the rich people is that a lot of them do buy this stuff to just possess it. If you have the money, nothing will stop you from having your food delivered from a expensive restaurant or cooked by a butler. Society is heading towards its doom....

@closer71 you are a perfect example of what he is talking about. Very few know what it is but its not because it is not targeted at the working class. You know what it is so I can assume you are of higher class, like cooking, or are deviant from normal traits of your social class. When he says 'permanent high school' he is talking about how people, much like yourself, find the need to call people an "ass" or and "idiot" for not knowing something you know.

This is so unbelievably untrue. This is one pompous ass' opinion. Maybe he needs to read Angela's Ashes - it's an incredibly well-written book. This 4-minute waste of time is one man's lame opinion. Many of us worked hard, studied hard and volunteer a TON. He is clueless. What a diatribe - honestly, it was full of generalities and the stereotyping is ridiculous.

The ‘knowledgeable’ man being interviewed is so off base. He seems upset about the people who buy the French wine and potato peeler that he didn’t know what it was. I don’t care what my friends think about my stuff and I don’t think my sister or sister in law worry about that either. I think the gentleman was speaking for himself and only himself.
