Well, I went on to become a biologist which was a better career path because science is based in reality and I needed to get back to reality, I was so lost in my ego. But that is what poeple end up doing in the arts industry plus end up with alchohol and drug additions , sex addictions. It is the whole cult of it all . Women and children especially vulnerable . Nowadays I think some younger actors/musicians are fame hounds But if you think back to high school - the kids into drama and music were generally outliers, kinda nerds - so if they do make it big, some people that may be kind of naturally introverted are now celebrities with no privacy - who may naturally be kind of geeky are now supposed to be "hip"

Funny thing is though, the vast majority of conservatives just want to live their lives in peace. They want a decent job, raise a family, and especially not be told how to live their own lives. I always tell myself "This happened before, it will happen again, just stick to your craft and stay persistent and the moment you get to display your craft they will all go: Fuck us, we made a mistake!" Actors are unstable because 1. Many lack mental resiliency or toughness. They lack the life experience or skills they need to cope with the emotions and characters they create. The mind will make that shit real, and theater school won't teach how to do with it, when it gets out of control. 2. Its 60% looks, 45% network, 5% talent. When you go to a casting call where everyone looks like you, there's not much to differentiate yourself from others. Many resort to extreme measures to stand out or get noticed. 3. Hollywood is full of angry beta males, running things, who are left uncheck because everyone is always fake nice (see no.2) or emotionally worn out or weak (see no 1.) to resist. (Tell me James Bond, or any ROMCOM is not the ultimate beta male fantasy.)

Yeah....The stress of having to work with a bunch of egomaniacs, dealing with production staff who think they understand the art better than you, working in multiple locations with no guarantee of the: weather,, sets, crew, lighting, cast all being perfect, rehearse after knocking off from your day job, staying healthy and in good voice, memorizing all of the: dialogue, blocking, facial expressions, timing, dance moves(if included), having an understanding partner who doesn't automatically think you're sleeping with the female lead and who knows you will be away a lot, making every moment exist as if that is the first and only time you've been in it and....to cap it all off, for stage acting: being able to feel the crowd and bring them into the narrative without them knowing you're doing that or feeling conned. Being able to truly enthrall and entertain a full theatre of paying customers is a tough gig. There are nights you wonder what went wrong and it wasn't anything you, or the other cast, could've done done anything about. Then...you need to unwind. To let your motor get back to idle and allow the endorphins, serotonin and adrenaline to ebb back to a normal state. Now...go and get some sleep. Oh...I forgot the audition process. Brutal! I know people think ill of the 'Hollywood' types. That stands to reason as they've created that environment for themselves. The machine is relentless and there is a huge dose of self importance. Actors the world over don't associate with that group because it is a world of fakery. All smoke and mirrors and very little substance. Now. Comedians on the other hand... They're all completely normal folk. Hahahaha!

I did an audition for the movie Last Castle many years back and it was weird. They talked about me like I was not in the room for a bit and then after a couple minutes they looked at me and said "you would need to shave your head" I didn't know what to say cause it wasn't a question so I awkwardly stood there for what felt like a long time and then said "would that give me the role?" The lady said "we would need to see you with your head shaved". I told them I could not do that because my normal job was customer facing and my boss would lose her mind (well, more than usual she was always freaking out about something). That was that. I never had much interest in acting though did some stage stuff to help friends who were playwrights. I'd just went down there because it was filming in my town and they specifically said they were looking for muscular, athletic men to fill small roles as military prisoners. The irony is years later I shaved my head and now keep it that way.

This is also the same in the world of music, not all but many aspiring young performers/artists/composers I met at uni didn’t genuinely love music first and foremost, they were insecure and narcissistic and saw it as a potential path to fame and attention - a friend of mine was obsessed with the idea of turning up to Carnegie Hall in a limo wearing a tuxedo greeted by paparazzi

The thing to remember about auditions is: they are looking to cast a very specific type for the role. If you are not the type, they pass on your audition. I realize how difficult rejection is but you can’t take it personally and you can’t give up. Perseverance wins the role.

OK I have a friend who is an acting coach and a professor at a small university in Ohio and we had this discussion once how does an actor create a character without losing themselves in the reality of it and his response was they create their character peripherally and not in front of them. My response to that is we cannot live peripheral everything that we create is in front of us through feelings and thought. Meaning what I/eye believe myself to be is what I/eye am. I don’t mean we just put thought to it . I mean to sew it into our Being.

When I was younger, I wanted to be an actor. I just thought it would be cool to entertain people since I like to make people laugh and have fun. Problem is I don’t have a good look and then seeing how the majority of Hollywood acts now, there’s no way I could put up with that even if I was good enough to get a spot. But I do agree that there are a lot of crazy people that become actors. It’s like the people casting purposely pick them for the roles since they are easier to manipulate. Think about it. If you’re a Hollywood big shot, of course you want the insecure person that is crazy rather than the confident person who is sane. It’s easier to control the insecure person and get them to do what you want. That’s why I think Hollywood is such a left leaning cult. They get these young people that are crazy and manipulate them. I mean look at all those girls who come from Disney and Nickelodeon. They end up having breakdowns in their late teens and early twenties. They are usually super fucked up too. It’s a complete mess

I've been in this business now for about 7+ years and while I love the work and craft for what it is, everything Joe is mentioning is absolutely true. I've been very fortunate enough to meet and work with outstandingly talented actors, but in terms of the craziness and narcissism that exists - I mean WOW. It's a shame because while there are some ridiculously talented young actors who have emerged and solidified themselves on the scene, a lot of them are in just for the fame really, and everyone can see it. It's going to be a huge loss for the industry when Pacino, De Niro and Meryl Streep just to name a few will pass away. Also have to blame the business of the industry. Having lived and worked in LA also for a couple years the city and the acting world alone is just like Babylon. Won't be surprised if the craft ends up dying, which is a shame because of what it used to stand for.

I auditioned for Disneyland a couple of times. I never had any luck so I guess it's not my calling. The princess auditions are the worst because they stand all the girls in straight lines. They stare at your face and body. I always had this feeling that I'm in the wrong place. Some girls who don't get pick leave crying their eyes out. What's even more annoying is how my mom always made me wear clothes I don't usually wear to try to "fit in." She even suggested getting a weave. I honestly want to shave my head and get tattoos. I use to get pissed off about not being picked but I don't care anymore. I haven't thought about auditioning in months. Now I'm thinking about getting into a combat sport, like mma.

Honestly....If you’re going to be an actor. Treat yourself as a professional auditioner. Don’t go into it thinking “this could be it!” It’s most likely not. Go into just wanting to audition and get it over with to move onto the next one. There’s always going to be more auditions. It’s like playing a battle royale game. You’re most likely not going to win so just do your best, have fun, and hone your skills as an actor for the sake of your art for YOU alone. The casting director doesn’t matter. Just you and your art matters. You can always just play another round. :)

I feel sympathetic for people like this... They should have read the Velveteen Rabbit as a kid (or even as adult). A quote: “Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked “It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
