Meanwhile, you've got guys like me. Despite an 86 ASVAB score enlists as an Airborne Infantryman. Gets selected for a specialized reconnaissance unit, gets security clearances, in 5 years spend a total of 26 months in Afghanistan, decided to call it good and got out. A few years later I decide I want to rejoin and go SF, as a lot of my buddies that were in have gone that route. They're doing good things and I want to be a part of it. Talk with a recruiter, fill out paperwork. After over a year of back and forth, medical evaluations, psych testing, TS clearance paperwork, foreign language proficiency testing, the recruiter calls me and tells me that because I (as a WA state resident) had smoked pot 4 years prior to this application (after it was legalized in WA), I'm disqualified. To put this into perspective. To apply to be a Special Agent in the FBI you can't have smoked pot in the previous 3 years or done any other drug in the last 10. From that metric, it's easier for me to join the FBI than to rejoin the Army. So yeah. You've got one guy here who is smart, has physically done the job before, has the experience, has seen combat, AND WANTS TO REJOIN, and is denied because he got high in 2014.

If the military would restructure pay grades so that bonuses and extra pay can be rewarded based on your position in the military, you might get more qualified applicants wanting to join. In the US Military, an E-4 specops soldier, engineer, or cyber security specialist are all paid the same as the E-4 gate guard grunt, despite having vastly more knowledge and critical skills needed to complete the military mission successfully. Sure, the benefits are great but $30k salary is $30k salary. Why do you think so many skilled service members leave after their first contract? Sure, people are out of shape and don't qualify. But people who WANT to join the military will lose weight and get fit to do it. The problem is, people no longer want to do it.

@ecole1462 жыл бұрын
@@makdjejd2471 You're correct, at least partially. You do have to pay for food if you ever want to eat anywhere other than the base cafeteria. You can buy groceries at the exchange though which is tax-free. There is also a cost that you're not considering though - if you're an enlisted rank, and you're not married, you're living on base in barracks with roommates until you hit E5 or higher. People with advanced technical skills generally aren't too keen on staying in the military when they can get paid double or more outside and have their own apartment.

I know millennials followed that advice and it was bunk after 2008. Now everyone, even many of the same people advising college, are blaming those college grads for making that choice when they were listening to what was supposedly the informed opinion and stating that the trades were obviously the way to go. They were just kids, whose brains were not fully developed, listening to what was bombarded to them throughout school. I just wish people had a better grasp of why kids choose what they did.

This has been an ongoing problem with military recruiting for decades. To join any branch of the military, you must be mentally, morally, and physically qualified, and the majority of the 17 - 29 year old population falls short in one or more of the three categories. I was a Marine Recruiter in a southern town from 1994 to 1997 and genuinely struggled to recruit the assigned number each month. One issue was the fallacy that, “you can always join the military if you can’t do anything else.” The fact of the matter is that many of the population couldn’t pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery ( ASVAB) test. Several college/jr. college grads failed the pre-ASVAB screening tests. One of the 11 high schools I was assigned to had an AP English teacher ask to take the ASVAB when it was given at the school. She failed it. Another issue was the trend of a sedentary lifestyle. The overwhelming majority of the HS students couldn’t pass the Initial Strength Test, even if they were athletes. Yet another challenge was that “Dr. Mom” would convince their kids that they had asthma and needed an inhaler or that they had ADD/ADHD/OhDeeDooDahDay and needed Ritalin. Dr. Mom would then take little Johnny to enough doctors until they found one who agreed and would prescribe whatever Dr. Mom said. Both medications are disqualifying. Finally, police records and juvenile offenses presented a roadblock to a surprising number of the age-qualified target audience. The old adage of the judge giving the convicted individual the choice of jail or the military has been gone for years - if it was ever actually true. The bottom line is that the military does not want criminals. In three years I recruited 78 young men and women. The common thread is that they were good, hard-working kids who wanted to better themselves and were not afraid of a challenge. I always told them that I would never recruit anyone if I wouldn’t serve with them in combat. This came to fruition; I later served in Iraq with several of them.

If that's true, then why did the military, meet recruitment numbers, almost every year under, Bush. Bush, carried the military vote, in his second election. I believe he had, close to 75 percent of the military vote. Recruitment didn't drop, until Obama, took office.
@icankickflipok5 жыл бұрын
War Monger that doesn’t necessarily indicate that it’s the result of the presidency. During bush, our country was invaded and attacked for the first time since Pearl Harbor. Every American in the country wanted revenge. Then after a while it came out the war on terror was based on a lie, that Saudi had WMDs when they didn’t at all and our government knew that at the time. People lost all their trust overnight. Why would you wanna join the military knowing that the wars we are fighting right now aren’t working and aren’t being fought for what they tell us they are. And that truth about the bush administration lying about wmds was revealed to the public during the Obama administration.
@warmonger91005 жыл бұрын
@@icankickflipok you might want to investigate and check your facts. WMD were found in Iraq. Small enough to fit a couple bunkers. That's why a bunch of Marines, sued the US government for exposure and non discloser of what was in the bunkers. As of 2005, the entire US knew, we were mislead on the invasion of Iraq. That was well before, Obama, took office. 2006 to 2010, the US military filled their recruitment numbers. Yes, that had everything to do, with the President. 2006, was the peak of the war and bloodiest, yet, more people joined. US Millay enlistment and retention went down, in 2011 to 2015 because of, Obama. It was a direct reflection of how Obama, treated and hated the military. We can see the same under Clinton, in the late 90s. The security of Saudi oil, is extremely important to American. The American dollar, is backed by Saudi oil. Any threat to Saudi Arabia or their oil, is a threat to the American and world economy. War, is simply an extension of policy and politics. We created a military, to protect our borders and to protect US personnel and interests abroad. You may not like it but protecting the US economy, is a just war. Unless your ok with our economy collapsing.

The average number for Iraq hovered around 0.7% while getting more than 80% of our total oil from Canada and the state of North Dakota. After leaving the Iraq war $6,400,000,000,000 in debt, our percentage of oil from Iraq slightly decreased which means that the theory that we invaded for oil makes no sense whatsoever. The reason gas prices fell after the war was because we made an agreement with the Saudi Arabian Department of Defense to pay for their defense budget and they would give us discounted oil in exchange. We invaded Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein’s tyrannical regime and liberate the Iraqi people, plain and simple.

This is very true. I originally joined 13 years ago and when I went back to MEPS for OCS 2 years ago, most people were being turned way due to being overweight. Blew my mind that so many kids were overweight and another OCS candidate (same age as me) and myself were one of the most in shape people there and was 14 years older than pretty much everyone there!

They told us at MEPS that roughly 40-50% of applicants for every branch require a waiver of some kind. I was there less than 2 months ago.

Garrett is 100% correct in the state of our (the West's) health/trades crisis. In Australia back in the 80's, the state governments decided that's the state school system need a revamp to attract more academic individuals; it was loosing to the private schools. So they removed any trade courses from the curriculum ie; wood work and metal shop etc and changed all the school names from High School to College. Students didn't get the opportunity to choose what they wanted in a career through, practical experience. Instead they were funneled into the University grinder, so everyone could become managers and corporate marketers. People don't understand how important, the Blue Collar worker is, to this world we live in. Everyone cannot be a manager most people have to pull the cart. If you "Think" you are a great manager but end up pulling the cart, things have a tendency to break down. Don't let people push you down a path not of your making.

I tried joining the military for years with every branch back in 2010 to 2012 and kept getting denied for a surgery I had as a baby that doesn't effect anything, I easily passed physical and my asvab, all I wanted as a kid was to serve
@GabrielofAdonai Жыл бұрын
I got denied In 2011 for the Marines and every other branch and I was passing the IST and PFT with flying colors. For having glasses 100% CORRECTABLE. Their loss. I guess God knew I may end up dying for oil or some other stupid government interest and no real danger. Still respect the vets tho, just not the old men who send us off to die in our prime.

Until you realize that America has real enemies foreign and domestic, you get invaded and made someone's else's slave, then you will probably think that i would have been a wise decision to be in good shape and have some real training. The people that usually undermine the military experience are usually the ones not ever have done any kind of military service

I'm an American immigrant. 2 years ago I used to be very depressed and anxious and also had sucidal tendencies. I was going through a lot, my parents got divorced because my mom was sleeping with someone else, and after their divorce I used to see her with her boyfriends. She never used to spend time with me. These events had really bad effects on me. I quit my high school football team, and became obese. I stopped studying and became very invested in video games. Now I'm trying to recover from what I have become, once KZbin recommended me a lecture of Jordan Peterson about single parenthood and its effects on the child. I realised I had a lot of these problems and that motivated me to make myself better. All I'm saying is the American society is fucked up. Even the teachers are left wing supporters and also woke. There is no patriotism in Americans anymore. Now how do we think that there will be people who are motivated or eligible to join military?

Its not so much of IQ but physicality. If you broke ur leg or finger as a kid then that will most likely disqualify you at MEPS. Small physical things are the things that disqualify most applicants, tattoos in the wrong places and shit like that lol. Besides if you get a low score then they will just throw u into infantry lmao
