Joe is talking about the _Theory of the Limited Good_ -- what he calls the famine mentality. I remember thinking kind of like that when I was in my teens. It leads to resentment of anyone's and everyone's success. I knew a guy years ago -- a real black pit of a human being, a dark narcissist -- and I could tell he was one of those. He hated me because _he_ wanted to be "the intelligent one', and thought I was robbing him by being smart. I think eventually he started to work out his psychological issues, but for several years he created havoc in the lives of everyone he came across.

@@ThumbDr _He_ thought I was the smartest person in the room, and that was why he spread gossip about me continuously for years. Attacking someone who has not attacked you is *always* a reveal of internal insecurities, and often the 'attacker' is the only one who believes his motives are hidden, inscrutable. I only _consider_ myself in terms of my actions -- mostly productivity and morality. Otherwise I make it a point not to think about myself -- something that has taken decades of practice, and serious adversity I would never have chosen for myself.

@@paryanindoeur I’m just joshin’ ya, but to be serious: I didn’t know about the “Theory of the Limited Good”. I just remember an old friend of mine preaching “scarcity vs. abundance mindsets” because he was obsessed with self-help books & specifically that one Stephen Covey book, which I suspect Joe might’ve pulled from too. I had no idea that the concept was written decades before, by an anthropologist I’ve never heard of before. Do you know if the idea pre-dates even him? I don’t know what search terms to plug in to learn this & I don’t know why I’m so curious about the full origin, but I am!
@paryanindoeur
@paryanindoeur Жыл бұрын
@@CantTellYou I understand that you cannot know... but I do. I was speaking about a specific room at a specific time, btw, and I never said I thought I was the smartest person -- just that a narcissist, who had been abused as a child, btw -- acted in a bizarre, passive-aggressive manner, secretly trying to poison other people against me, over several years, felt threaten by me. Considering no one here has anything riding on it, and I have nothing to gain from it other than the benefit of sharing knowledge, it should not matter to you whether I'm lying or not. Some people just have an innate distaste from an honest admission of their own value. Sometimes it's cultural, like the Scandinavian _Law of Jante,_ but I see 'denying reality' as worse than the risk of being misread as arrogant by people who don't know me.

Skill levels such as verbal language usage, reading and creative writing aptitude are tested at an extremely early age. That's when they find out how gifted they truly are in creative writing. If it's not creative writing, then it's more like sales, acting, public relations, communication skills, etc.

About those timing laughs, it can be reversed as well. Way back when I was starting out, I came up with what I thought was a "clever" premise for a joke, but not a particularly funny one. It was about how the Catholic Church honors saints on the days they died, instead of their birthdays (because martyrdom) and call it a "feast" of that saint ("feast" here meaning "festival"), and my idea was that the only ones who "feast" when a Christian becomes a martyr are the lions. The trouble was, even though I thought the concept was clever, I couldn't figure out a way to make it funny. Then it hit me. If I tell the joke in a way that I know is going to bomb, and then have a much better follow-up joke about the fact that my joke bombed, I can get a laugh and still have used the clever premise. So I deliberately changed up my speech rhythm so that it WOULDN'T trigger a laugh response, but with just enough of a pause that the audience would realize a split second later that there was supposed to be a laugh, and then, hit them with the REAL punch line. And it worked like a charm! Me: "The Catholic Church celebrates something called 'feast days,' honoring the day that a Catholic saint died. A Catholic dies and they call it a 'feast?' Yeah, for the lions!" (Audience is awkwardly silent.) Me: "Too soon?" (HUGE laugh from the audience!)

There's a lot of comedians where they kind of awkwardly force the audience into laughing... Even though it was a bit of a cheap shot... Louis does sometimes go down that route... But there's enough good stuff in his material that you kind of give him it...

Louis should go down as one of the best comics ever. He's fuckin hilarious on stage. They tried to destroy him because he made a mistake and people judged him like they're perfect but I'm glad he's back and comedy is better off for it.

Comedians need to understand that 9 times out of 10 people are laughing to be nice. We aren't dying to laugh, and they are pulling it out of us. We are laughing to be nice, like when someone does a lame magic trick and you say oooh ahhhh.

As a comic, I've never understood the "can't follow" thing. In my experience the worst thing to follow has always been a comic leaving the audience cold, when a great comic kills on the other hand, it would always be a great set for me.

Most people much prefer comics that work cleaner as opposed to the people that are very filthy. Brian Regan, Seinfeld, Anjelah Johnson, Nate Bargatze (sp), Louis Anderson, Ryan Hamilton, Jim Breuer, etc. The cleaner guys have more skill than the filthy ones.

It is an easy laugh. Smart edgy comedy is much harder and a really good comedian wouldn't go for the "easy laugh" because the only thing that is difficult is the lowering of the bar and the risk all will be lost.

They didn't say THEY could do it. People are saying "dirty" sets are easier because there are almost nothing off limits. Working clean makes you work with a lot of restrictions. It's like an MMA fight and you can only use boxing. You can make a clean joke as a dirty comic but not vice versa.

I will slightly disagree with Louis on one thing. If you are a headliner then it is difficult to follow a good act because the audience is expecting the best. Now there's exceptions to every rule but if you're a headliner or easily the most famous in a group then you better bring your A game or you will bomb hard if you go last. Look at Jeff Foxworthy, he was DYING to not be the last to go on because the other Blue Collar guys were so damn good that the audience expectation of him was huge. As soon as he was the second/third comedian everything leveled out. Think of it like a fireworks show and the grand finale is in the middle of the show, you'd think the second half sucked. lol
