People absolutely want everything to fall apart. I was caught up in it myself. I think part of me wanted the world to end in calamity either with climate change or resource security issues. But we get through it. The oil won't last forever and we all know that, we'll eventually transition to a society based on renewables and wonder what all the fuss was about. The problems we face aren't insurmountable: we'll realise that climate change was a bunch of bullshit and then move on to tackling issues of resource security like we should be, then we'll be living solar paneled life that could go on for thousands of years (barring asteroid impacts or supervolcanoes or anything majorly serious)..
