"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I had some douchebag reply to my comment on another video about this topic. He said that the whole Bud Light promotion was "The Last Straw". I replied that I found it quite curious that out of all the things that could send them over the edge, it was this small promo can with custom art on it that was gifted, as part of a small promotion, to a trans content creator. It wasn't any big rallies, or protests, or government bill that was the last straw for them.... no It was a company daring to congratulate one single trans person who was celebrating a personal milestone in their life. In effect... they saw a happy trans person being patted on the back by someone, and felt it as their duty to take a collective shit all over them. Most people out here had never heard of Dylan, and the promo, should it have been left alone, would have come and gone with barely any notice. That custom art can of beer, that was gifted to Dylan, would have collected dust on a shelf for years to come. But no.... bigots gotta bigot, and what 'REALLY' sent them frothing at the mouth was seeing a trans person get some validation. HOW DARE THEY!!

Bud Light is virtue signaling to one of the smallest percentages of our population while not really giving a fuck about them and a large portion of their consumer base is choosing to no longer consume their products because of this virtue signaling. Pointing this out is essentially a new story that is worthy of our time and shows that we prioritize what matters, but choosing to not consume a product over virtue signaling shows that they don't have the right priorities. Is this not a clear case of a double standard?

Even though I disagree with Rogan on this issue, I have no problem with him. This shows he’s independent and why I only watch/listen to podcasts anymore. The left has been calling him a right-winger since he came out against the Vaccines. Now do they think he’s still a MAGA guy after defending the Trans Bud Light ad? Lol. We should applaud Rogan for not towing the line that we see the traditional media and Late Night hosts do with every issue. If everyone agrees on every issue, then they are not being genuine

The right-wing accusations aren't for nothing. Rogan endorsed Ron DeSantis, who is about as right-wing as they come, to the point that even Kyle felt compelled to call him out. Does that mean Rogan is fundamentally right-wing? No, it means he's gullible and inconsistent enough to think Bernie Sanders and Ron DeSantis are basically the same.

Speaking as a moderate conservative here. Our culture just isn’t mature enough to have these nuanced conversations on a broad scale. Should trans people get fair representation and be included in culture? Absolutely. Anyone who disagrees is likely ignorant, hateful, or indoctrinated, or some combination of all 3. Does a trans person being featured on a Bud Light can really do anything to threaten anyone? No. Should trans women compete in biological women’s sport? Now that’s a good debate. When you see a trans woman winning by margins that are unheard of in the respective division of competition, say swimming, that seems unfair. Should trans women be able to freely and openly use women’s restrooms? I don’t know. Some people will abuse it while the vast majority will use it honestly. Like almost anything humans do. That’s a nuanced and difficult conversation to have. Should trans theory be pushed on children? I don’t know. Personally, I want my kid learning and prioritizing math, language, and reasoning skills. Being kind to everyone if they’re reciprocal in their kindness is just a baseline morality I’m going to instil in my child. Nobody deserves unfair treatment merely for their physical or mental characteristics unless they’re an overt asshole. In that case, I’ll teach my kid to just avoid them if possible and to stand up for themselves if necessary by using dialogue. This Bud Light controversy has definitely exposed the insanity of the rigid Right to me.

This isn't about who you do or do not sell your products to, it is about knowing your customer base and not committing commercial suicide which is what Bud did. If you own a shop and 98% of your customers are from a certain background, you don't piss them of and then wonder why they have stopped buying in your shop and you have to close down due to loss of trade. They have now back tracked 180 and dropped and replaced the ad with something to bring their old customer base back. Kyle missed an opportunity here to reference the “hogwarts legacy” boycott. Was the perfect example of the opposite scenario that showed what he was trying to say. People were against people boycotting that because they just saw it as annoying and or irritating. Same as the bud light situation here.
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine Жыл бұрын
There's an important difference between these boycotts, though. People boycotted Hogwarts Legacy because of J.K. Rowling's comments. The mistake was thinking that there's a connection between the game and those comments (and also, some people took it way too far). When it comes to the Bud Light boycott, people only boycotted it because someone who's trans was promoting it. If she hadn't been trans, nobody would have had an issue with it. So, the reason behind the boycott is simply that the person is trans - that's just transphobia. So, while the (in)effectiveness of the boycotts is comparable, the reasons behind the boycotts are not.
@GringleTV
@GringleTV Жыл бұрын
@@MaggaraMarine I understand that but his point wasn’t really about the legitimacy of the boycotts but rather that the public’s reaction to them and how they annoy the public. At least that’s how I saw it. And I thought the Hogwarts legacy boycott was a good example of that from their reaction to it

This is unique to woke culture.. on the right the most you can say is there are times they are subject to group think and get triggered by for example kneeling or anti-war movements etc but the right is much better about allowing dissident speech
