@@mattherzberg991 Clearly the guy scooting. It makes total sense to retreat from this because it’s clear the guard puller wants the standing guy in his guard. Meanwhile, the standing guy doesn’t want to walk directly into the exact spot the guard puller wants him to be in. The *only* incentive the top guy has to engage is to avoid a penalty. That’s why the BJJ format is clowned on so much… it punishes the guy for the logical action of not sitting down and not wanting to walk into an obvious entanglement while stripping away the best counter to that situation (strikes). There is also zero way for the top player to force a stand up via the rules even though the bottom player can force engagement on his terms using the rules simply by sitting down. The rule set clearly incentivizes guard pulling. Meanwhile, it punishes the guy actually making a martially sound decision.

-A demoralized boxer who has psychologically surrendered will hold on to his opponent out of desperation -A judoka who has been thrown in judo competition (without ippon) will roll up into a turtle position and ride out the clock for the 20-60 second time limit -A BJJ competitor who is not confident with his takedowns (or has no takedowns) will do this ^^^ Every combat sport that isolates one aspect of fighting - will have some way for people to manipulate the system.

One time in a tournament I was high in the faixa-azul elimination and my dojo-mate gave me intel that my next azul opponent was also a judo second Dan. Guess what I did? Yep, you guessed it. I squatted my @$$ down really low like a sumo wrestler and “challenged” him to throw me. (It was a tactic I heard from my former judo sensei in Florida). The fight went to the ground, but without me getting thrown. ;)

I don’t see a problem here, it’s a sport, why don’t people complain about wrestlers super low stance there head is prone to punches and kicks? Cause strikings not allowed, or boxers wide stance prone to leg kicks, kick-boxers high stance prone to takedowns? They all have shit problems if it’s a street fight or MMA.
