Yes, but we all need a foundation of education based on empirical fact and we need to agree on basic observable reality. Children can't think for themselves until they learn foundational and empirical knowledge. That is how many of us have gone on to projects where we are demanded, where I went to school, to think for ourselves by junior high, on through college and then careers where our knowledge is proven every day with useful projects aimed at bettering life for all people and surprisingly nothing was a lie, no secret sessions to teach what was lies, you know, so we don't, build bridges that immediately collapse and things like that. Funny thing is growing number who claim they think for themselves and question everything, except that does not include their own intrinsic beliefs which they do not test nor question ever. They are basically conspiracy enthusiasts who always prefer to believe the most far fetched ideas that don't even actually fit theory and totally out of hand reject empirical based science by which so many of us perform in our careers. It is basically ages old mythology from the days of giant sea monsters and a flat earth. But here is empirical science proving what was already known and really boggling the mind of a flat earth believer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKHJZWekn7trnZI I believe your statement needed qualified to state the importance of that foundation we are taught, of empirical provable and observable knowledge. From there any intelligent person thinks for her/himself.
@joshuastrawser91605 жыл бұрын
@@jimgodofbiscuits You started strong and reasonable in that statement and then drifted into some wild eyed ranting toward the end that rather justified my generally skeptical nature. I agree wholeheartedly with the fact that we need a shared basis of observable data to work from. I am skeptical of proposals that would assert that humanity can construct a command economy that somehow produces a better climate and excellent outcomes for those same humans, as the available data does not support utopian imaginings.

It's VERY difficult to win an argument/debate against a genius. It's impossible to win an argument/debate against a moron. Edit: -Bill Murray Evidently me not saying Bill said it means I'm just trying to take credit for it. Clearly that is the only conclusion that can be made as to why I didn't put "-Bill Murray" at the end. Of course, obviously, duh, it's the only logical conclusion. Why question your herculean leap in logic & wisdom we mortals cannot hope to comprehend? Couldn't be that I just heard it once and thought it was applicable here at the time I commented it a fuckin' YEAR AGO. The vast majority of my knowledge was acquired after my school years. This is why i believe Neil's message is so incredibly invaluable, we need to be teaching kids how to inquire, rather than teaching them to memorize information. Most of what kids learn in school pre-college, is forgotten, and most of what college graduates learn is outdated within a decade. The most important thing we can teach people, is the desire to learn, and the method in which incorporating information is most efficient.
@fromagefrizzbizz93776 жыл бұрын
+Agronox DT As I understand it, the *purpose* of schools in our neck of the woods is to give students some basic skills and understandings in the basics, but more importantly to teach kids how to enquire, how to think critically, and understand logic and experiment. In many cases this extends straight into University, because what you learn in University is, in most careers, not immediately useful but gets the students to truly understand the basics of what's going on underneath, and pick up the job-specific particulars when necessary.

It is a well-known fact that clouds are continually seen moving in all manner of directions - yes, and frequently, in different directions at the same time - from west to east being as frequent a direction as any other. now, if the Earth were a globe, revolving through space from west to east at the rate of nineteen miles in a second, the clouds appearing to us to move towards the east would have to move quicker than nineteen miles in a second to be thus seen ; whilst those which appear to be moving in the opposite direction would have no necessity to be moving at all, since the motion of the Earth would be more than sufficient to cause the appearance. But it only takes a little common sense to show us that it is the clouds that move just a they appear to do, and that, therefore, the Earth is motionless. We have, then, a proof that the Earth is not a globe.

I'm so glad Neil mentioned the whole skepticism thing. The other day I saw a vid on KZbin talking about a guy who had worked in area 51 with supposed alien craft. The video was analyzing the guys body language to see if he was lying. His body language, according tho the creator running the channel, showed that the guy wasn't lying. I went to the comment section as I normally do, and a surprising amount of people were just blindly agreeing that he must be telling the truth and they must be working on alien spacecraft. I thought it wasn't a great idea to just blindly agree rather than remaining skeptical. I then saw a dude responding to each comment saying how dumb they were and that there's no way the dude was telling the truth and that they 100% weren't working on alien spacecraft in area 51. He then went on to te everyone that they would know this if they were smart skeptics. And this is where Neil's comment comes in. I had to respond to the dude asking how he could possibly be judging others for not being smart skeptics when he himself wasn't. He acted like I was an idiot and just called me dumb, even after I explained that it isn't smart to blindly follow a train of thought just as it isn't smart to blindly reject it either. He just couldn't comprehend it. Know this is quite a wall of text and pretty random, so sorry, but thanks to anyone who took the time to read it haha.

A healthy amount of both let's you both question the world around you while not discrediting the legitimacy of what you are questioning. That's what I think it means to be a smart skeptic.

Ya well the thing about Bob Lazar is back in @1989 he went on record making all sorts of extraordinary claims. Especially back then no one believed him. He went into great detail about the internal mechanics of these "spacecraft" and claimed they even needed a specific element to properly function. The element, he called it element 115 or ununpentium. Back in the late 80's he was laughed at and considered a fraud because 115 or ununpentium dosent exist. But wouldn't you know in 2003 a group of scientists actually synthesized a new element: element 115 Now personally I've never seen a UFO and am sceptical of the whole phenomena but I think it's very possible that there's some truth to his claims

You have to understand this then it will all start to make sense, The earth is Satans domain, Male and Female are Satans Creation it tells us this in the bible! Once you get and understand this, you will understand why the world is a LIE! Satan is the master of all deception, so nothing makes sense in this world WHY??? because it makes sense to Satans Plans but it makes no sense to us the people because Satan is our enemy! So think about it that makes sense right! You have to turn the world upside down to know the truth want an example??? Ok here goes the Virgin many Christians worship the Virgin Right!!! YIP they do but what is the Virgin Really??? Well its a DEAD SHEEP! How do i know that?? well its easy once you understand Satans Lauguage, you look at a pic of the Virgin turn it upside down and you will see the DEAD SHEEP, so the truth hidden in Plain site but you cant see it! Its hidden from you! it tellls us in the bible that it is the glory of Satan to hide and or cover a thing to hide its true meaning or purpose! So worshipping the Virgin is not what you think, Satan sees us the people as Dead Sheep and he is correct on that! because now you are in his territory and because you cant think for yourself he wants your soul and will get it if you dont WAKE UP to these FACTS! ANother example. the vatican the main alter is a dead sheep, starring right at you but you cant see it even if i would show you, you would be able to show me! Got to hand it to the artist its good! but once you see it you cant unsee it! The Main Alter describes Genesis 1 in detail, There you see its satan who created male and female not God, so really we are all children of Satan on this earth but before that we were all children of God until we got caught in satan's trap! see www.kleckfiles.com for facts evidence proof of this. If you get this you have a chance to SAVE Yourself if you dont you are done for! This world is coming to an end! and if you die before you reconcile your relationship to God you are done for! WAKE UP!!! not much time left!

I hardly call that fraud, but as for Dubay... he's invested in many conspiracies, and when I say "invested" I mean; in every sense of the word. anyone with an IQ in triple figures should be able to debate Dubay, no need for Tyson. Its really not that hard to see right thru Dubay charlatanism, hence why, he'd only debate if it's good for business, vs Tyson would expose himself. Dubay's nowhere neear the level of say, Samuel Rowbotham, when it comes to charlatan capabilities, SR could actually hold his own, not just preach to the choirs... incidentally, Dubay's "200 proofs..." is a total rip off from one in SR's circle: William Carpenter, called "100 proofs..."

Just a thought, the Earth has {plate} tectonics right. . And when a mountain is created is because of them plate tectonics coliding , when an earthquake occurs is because of them plate tectonics scraping each other when moving forward and back, sometimes the 2 crust stay in fault stuck till it realese and that quick shock, creates a strong magnitude which we refere or call earthquake. So with that in mind wouldn't one of those plates would of already snapped out of place completely. Like how do you put/ fit plates on a sphere ? By the way it is still a Theory. . . That that's how earthquakes happen. no bs I'm using science logic by what these scientist give us, and why can't we go to Antarctica we have heaters now days so no more excuses about the weather being too cold, while they up there conductin experiments🤷♂️ js , the Earth may not be flat but is definitely not a sphere
@howardbeard-marlowe41894 жыл бұрын
Did your research take into account the shrinking of the earth to cue ball size paired with that it would FEEL as smooth as a cue ball - human perception (or lack thereof) of the minuscule imperfections factors into what he said here. He didn't say it IS as smooth as a cueball he said when scaled down it would be smoother than any cueball ever machined.

@@carlosh.detorresbarrios1695 at the place where the tectonic plates pull away from one another, for example the mid-atlantic ridge, new crust is formed. We know this because we can measure the age of rock based on its magnetic field. Fitting plates on a sphere is no problem as long as the plates are curved. Also, lots of people have gone to Antarctica and their findings are well documented although tourists are nowadays not welcome as they seem to annoy the scientists there.

@@howardbeard-marlowe4189 yes, it's precisely this "feeling" of smoothness I was referring to. If you would cover the cue ball with medium sandpaper (particle size of 0.0005in) it would still be within the tolerance range used in Neils argument, but I doubt anyone would call that "smooth".
