Thank you John for featuring my hook, you make it look easy! I spend a least the length of the video drawing it out using a hydraulic press! It is a fairly new looking spike but it came from a box of rusty old spikes I got off of Ebay. I definitely need to work on rounding out the scroll.

Great hook Joe. I know what you mean by John making it look easy. I am also a beginner and have spent 3 hours just making a spike letter opener. Someday we'll be able to forge things faster but until then the fun is in seeing something change into something else (for me at least). Happy forging!

Hi John, as I was watching you punch the mounting holes the thought crossed my mind to just make the top screw hole. Then in the second position put a pin in the back of the hook that would serve to stop the hook from turning on the screw. The pin would only have to stick out 1/2" to 3/4".

As long as it doesn't need the strength or two fasteners that would work well

John both your and Joe's Hooks look great. However we Don't have Railroad Spikes here in UK we use Hexagon Bolts....And as you have so many projects using spikes I wondered how about making a spike from stock and then turning it into a hook of some kind ?. Thanks for all your intuative lessons. Toby

Duplication of a finished product is often the hardest thing in blacksmithing lol.
@BrianDaleNeeley4 жыл бұрын
I think I would have tried putting the fuller for the top half on the opposite side (the back of the hook), which would eliminate the bend from back (in my own opinion it looks a bit awkward, but that's only me, and others may see it as interesting). I think that may have been a better option for the shorter hook that John used, but I think they are both good hooks. These are certainly not criticisms, only the way I would have envisioned it (and with the benefit of seeing two other examples!). Sometimes (?often), we don't have a good idea on what we want until we have seen it, or done it, several times. But that's the great thing about blacksmithing; you can do the same project sometimes dozens of different ways, and none of them are "wrong". Some might be easier, or quicker, but not wrong.
@BlackBearForge4 жыл бұрын
That would be an improvement.

I do have an idea in my head I think would make for a pretty cool hook. Too bad I don't have the equipment and abilities, at this time, to pull it off. I think it would be pretty cool, though I'm not sure how to pull it off without adding a weld. Also, I think you could've gotten away with using one of those Viking stump anvils you made on this hook. I did notice that, at the end, it looks like his hook was a bit thicker in the center section. So I think you were on to something in saying his had more material to work with.

Joes spike is new and unused , you can tell by the embossing on the head. It usually is gone or partially gone by the time a hydraulic or pneumatic spiker hits it. If you don’t like yours I will take it. 😇
