Truly one of the greatest musicians ever. His understanding of the instrument is amazing. When someone can explain things with so much clarity, to make it seem so simple, that is the sign of someone that has spent a lot of time learning and understanding everything about the subject.

Man... I credit Joe for nearly all of my appreciation, desire, and education for all things music theory, and it's this video when I was introduced to the chord-scale quality format (Maj, min, min, Maj, Maj, etc.) and memorized the order. I've learned and committed all the diatonic modes nearly a decade ago (once again, thanks to Joe), but for some silly reason i never realized and figured out the respective chord quality associated with each scale degree. Things really took off for me concerning further assimilation of additional music theoretical concepts!

when guitar players talk, then we can see their playing skill and the pattern they use but when musicians who play guitar talk, everything could be valuable just like we saw from the video

Professor Satriani gave all guitar noobies some tough love here. You need to learn more than open major chords, open minor chords, barre chords, and the CAGED system. Learn every note on the fretboard. Learn every 7 and 9 chord. Study a chord chart along side a scale chart. You'll discover relationships therein. It takes time and work, but you can do it. One day you'll have that guitar epiphany where...all of a sudden...out of nowhere...it all makes sense. Good luck and ROCK ON!

this was very helpful it helped my to form a goal and a lesson plan, im excited to think ill one day be able to understand how to play fancy chords like in this video and not just the 1-3-5 of every mode

Well done, Silver; your point is well taken. I learned with a Sears & Roebuck $3 acoustic, a chord book, and scale book. KZbin and the Internet have made getting into theory not only accessible...but interesting and entertaining. I have some Paul Gilbert instuctional DVDs. Not only do you need the chops, you need to be conversant in theory to keep up with the content.

My advise is to not become overwhelmed by the amount you have to learn. I became like this about a year ago and I've only just got out if it. The trick is to force your brain to learn little bits at a time and find applications for them, then slowly as you learn more chords, apply them to what you already know. Take a simple I VI V in the key of C major. The simple chords are C, F and G. As you learn 7th chords etc, apply them to this simple chord progression. And so on in different keys. :)

+Philip Karovski Hi dude, what about listen a bit of jazz music sounds for you? I guarantee that you'll be safe with the chords. But I'm warning you that in rock n roll stuffs you see in 90% of the cases you dont see nothing beyond of minor chord with 7 minor or major with 7 major (or minor too). Hope this helps, see yah

Why these great guitar players always think some so basic things of chord progressions like they were some "secret perversions". All this is just basics of jazz chord progressions, those have been around for about 100 years, nothing secret or new. But difference is, that jazz players just talk about I-V-II patterns and so on to get away those long names of the chords.
@jono542811 жыл бұрын
u mean II-V-I
@MrTKS10011 жыл бұрын
jono5428 Just an example of roman numerals... But yeah that II-V-I is certainly the most known.
@JoshuaBardwell11 жыл бұрын
1. Satch certainly knows that this stuff is Jazz Chord Theory 101, or 202 at least. Just because he doesn't name-drop jazz when he's explaining the concepts doesn't mean he's ignorant. Let's face it, if Satch advertised Jazz Chord Theory lessons, most people would tune out. So he says, "Learn Modes from Satch" and gives you the goods. 2. Let's not diminish the complexity of Jazz Chord Theory 101, which is far more complex than 99% of musicians will ever want to experience.
@MrTKS10011 жыл бұрын
Joshua Bardwell You made a point. But the complexity is partially a myth that possesses many musicians.
@JoshuaBardwell11 жыл бұрын
Maybe so, but I'm an amateur musician, and I've tried to understand Jazz chord theory, and it's just too much to fit in my brain at once. I mean, I get the concept--that there are chords, and scales that fit the chords, and circle of fifths, and so forth--but putting it into practice is, so far, beyond me.
