What is really impressive about Joe Satriani and some other virtuosos is not how well they have mastered their instrument, but how they keep discovering the music itself. Such an amazing musician

Amazing to hear Joe talk about and play 'The Enigmatic'. I might learn the scale as it is in my scales book.

Yeah I get where you're coming from...not only do I respect what Joe has demonstrated, but also the time and effort put into these things...the fact remains that not many musicians out there take the time & trouble to get all these little things down...I'm a huge, I mean HUGE fan of Satch...but I never really learnt his songs, the inspiration I draw from him is that of time and effort and feel put into things ,such as this video...

The enigmatic scale is like a Lydian augmented #6 with a b2 ascending but when it's descending, it's an Ionian augmented #6 keeping the flatted 2nd. So the chromaticism in the scale is dissonant because in improvising, you can break some rules and use the scale as a dominant, or Ionian augmented with that b2. It's sound has a terrifying feel to it.

I shook Joe's hand, said "Hi!" and Joe signed a poster for me on August 14, 1992 at the Mall of America, Bloomington, Minnesota. Joe wrote: "To Tommy, Thanks for Listening! Joe Satriani" That poster has been on display in my home for over twenty years.

+Jo201515 Two notes played together that have a harmonic relationship to each other. Playing C and E, for example, would give the impression of C major, even though there's no G.

+Digby in the Doghouse What he's referring to in this video is how because the enigmatic scale has the notes spaced out so oddly, playing three note chords (triads) caused a lot of notes to clash. By only playing two note chords (dyads), it kept it clearer and let the notes ring out because there was less to clash with each other.

With all due respect to Mr. Satriani the "exotic" concept is relative. I guess that something that doesn´t come from the blues must sound exotic.

me too, I wasnt just being funny. I actually stopped listening to Joe after the Strange Beautiful Music cd because he just keeps doing stuff that is way too similar to what he has already done. I still think he's a cool guy and I like watching his lessons and thoughts about music theory.

Yeah,well,bring on Paco de Lucia next to Satch,and he's gonna leave the room,and never touch a guitar again for the rest of his life lol I love EVH,George Lynch,Yngwie and few other guitar playing,as well as songwriting.But,sometimes,all this "rock'n'roll" circus seems just pathetic when i think of Flamenco player...There's the real deal!!! No Wonder the first guitar model ever was build in Spain around the 12 Century,long,long before the blues was invented...Hi from France :)

HARMONIC MINOR
@Arycke
@Arycke 4 жыл бұрын
So nobody takes this detrimemtal.comment as fact: Neither the harmoniic minor nor modes thereof contain 3 consecutive half steps like the Enigmatic Scale. The Enigmatic Scale does have some similarity in sound and scale degree, yes, but it's definitively not that scale; it is it's own entity.

I think the Enigmatic scale is more of a jazz scale. I hope Satriani keeps practicing the scale cause that song he made isn't very good.
