I've been lucky enough to meet Joe a few times and he is the most humble and down to earth guy you could ever wish to meet - totally at odds with the fact he is one of the world's top guitarists. There is no ego and he isn't afraid to laugh and joke at himself either. My world changed musically the first time I heard 'Surfing With The Alien' - and it has been a better world ever since.

Amen! I was lucky to purchase one of his Black Pearl JS1000 guitars that he actually played! I met him in D.C. & he remembered the guitar he autographed & I had him autograph it again! Sweetest most humble guy! It was the Shockwave SuperNova Tour

Here is THE person who originally planted the idea in my head of wanting to play guitar. When i heard him play i wanted to make sounds like he squeezed out his guitar. So, in 1989, at the age of 19 and living in the bay area, i picked up guitar playing. Hearing bands bands like REM, 10.000 maniacs and pink floyd helped me make that decision. But joe is resonsible for the initial seed that was planted in my head in my late teens when i heard his music. Ive not played for 30 years and just last month picked it up again. I broke a finger and thought that was the end so i gave up. Sadly. But i am playing again. Ive got my callouses going. This is a good interview. He is actually allowed to talk and not redirected or interupted every 5 seconds. Quite the human being he is. The Crush of Love is my favorite

Wow. What a touching interview. As a guitarist myself, Joe has been an inspiration from the start and is the reason why I picked up the guitar in the first place. To see him open up that way when the songwriting question was asked is a first for me. Seeing your idol cry is a huge thing. As fans of music we only really see artists in their happy state, playing music, but when we see how much love, passion, and feel goes into an artists music is truly meaningful. Joe is a legend and will always be at the forefront of guitar playing, just like Michael Jackson is to pop. Joe you are incredible
@TejasM145 жыл бұрын
I agree. It is reaffirming. Often the media portrays such successful artists are demigods and celebrities, often stripping them of their humanity. In that way, it disconnects us from them and their process. But their is something deeply moving about not only hearing someone's moving music but also see that their personality is much the same as their music. In an age where PR and image construction rule the roost, it is reaffirming that we are all in the same boat of music, art and life.

@acgm0466 жыл бұрын
Same here. That comes to show how deeply emotionally involved he is in the process of reacting and creating upon those reactions. It was very moving. He will always have my utmost respect as a musician and human being. I've learned from artists like him and Devin Townsend that music is worth it when it is meaningful and genuine.

This is my favorite interview of Joe Satriani. I think we should have a script of it and start a book about Joe Satriani from it as a starting point. Thanks a lot for organizing it, preparing the for once very AMAZING and heart-felt questions, recording, editing, and final result: FAN-TAS-TIC. No wonder why everyone shed a tear at some point during this amazing moment in time. Bravo 👏

@Korg Rigon Genius is a word that loses its meaning when it is used so easily. Joe is very good, came up with some great melodies/songs because he has a knack for that but none of his songs are "genius." I think he would be the first to admit that.
@hesch-tag3 жыл бұрын
@Korg Rigon I agree that he wouldn't say it because he is a humble guy but he wouldn't think it either. Kirk is certainly not a genius. Jimi Hendrix is though. It's not about being famous it's about having something extra special and only very few people had/have that. But we will not agree on this because it is subjective anyway so neither of us can prove who is right.

Joe will never admit it, he is the silver surfer, and he's been playing out his story for years! grew up on a crystal planet out in the power cosmic. then one night after consuming a little too much flavor crystal #7 laced with Ice 9, he had a very spiritual experience, and just asked himself, Why?...then, without any further explaination or reason, he threw 3 sheets to the wind and left the planet. he was on a journey, to see if there was love in space? and he would eventually find it...it was a Chrome Guitar and it looked just like him. instantly he knew the answer to his why, and blasted off at The Speed of Light to the nearest planet that he could find that had life, with Unstoppable Momentum he would eventually reach earth. he did a few circles around the planet at first, admiring the sight, then did a dive bomb straight into the atmosphere, which was an experience in it self, like flying in a blue dream. he wound up landing on a beach, other fellow surfers everywhere, and immediatelly went to wonk on that chrome boy. the music, was like a door into summer, it melted everybody into tears, a grand ceremony and a true sight to behold. at the end, the crowd chanted! then they all gathered around him, all the surfers and the chrome surfer from space, and they decided to call the show, Surfing with the Alien.
