When I was in my late 20s (1990s) I lived in one of the worst gang and crime-riddled cities in Massachusetts AND lived in the worst neighborhood on the worst street. I was poor and had no choice. The street was so known for crime that there was literally a gang named after the street, the Ashley Street Gang. It was so bad, that instead of watching TV on the weekend, my roommate and I would grab some beers and chairs, roll up the blinds, and just watch up and down the street. People fighting, running down the street with a shotgun into a home, hearing 2 gunshots, a scream and the gunman running out, a guy walking down the street pulled out a pistol and unloaded it into a house then WALKED casually down the street with no fear or care, etc. It's so bad here that one day a guy ratted on someone sending him to prison so that guy's friend went to the rat's house, knocked and the guy's mother answered the door, so the gunmen shot and killed the mother. 2 days later, the rat then had someone go to that gunman's house, knock on the door, and the gunman's grandmother opened the door so he shot and killed her. Drug dealers would stand on the corner all day and night. One night I get home at 2:00am after a night of drinking with pals and I see a dealer on the corner. I was into Buddhism back then, so I go up to the drug dealer and start telling him about Buddhism and how drug dealing is unethical, he'll live a short life or go to jail, and that there are better, safer ways to make a living besides poisoning his community. Guy said I was right and he wanted to really get out of the lifestyle and we chatted for about 10 minutes with other gang members coming and going and listening to me. This is a city where people don't GAF and are shooting mothers and grandmothers. The next day I woke up and was like, "WTF is wrong with me? WTF did I do last night talking to a gang member and drug dealer? You moron." I don't know how I didn't at least get beat up and robbed. Sometimes, when you are genuine and mean no harm people can pick up on it I guess.
