I wanted to share something I enjoy doing from time to time and that is smoking a pipe! I've owned a pipe for over 20 years, but only recently got back into it. Join me as I tell you about my various pipe purchases.
We talk about the Tsuge: The Tasting (23) Tobacco Pipe
while enjoying some Cornell & Diehl Morley's Best pipe tobacco.

I only smoke filtered pipes. I am one of the unlucky people who get tongue bite if I don't use a filter. It doesn't matter what tobacco I smoke, or how much I fiddle with the moisture of the tobacco, or how slow I smoke....for me, no filter=tongue bite. Fortunately I found out about filters from Eddie Gray at The Pipe Nook, otherwise I would've quit smoking a pipe. You can get reducers to put in place of the filter for filtered pipes, in fact lots of filtered pipes come with a reducer in the box. So, if you like that pipe, I say go for it, and pick up a reducer if it doesn't come with one.

I have both filtered and unfiltered pipes, and I have promised myself that if I do get any more pipes (which I surely will), they must be able to hold a 6mm or 9mm filter. I get better taste and less tonguebite....(and it will kill you slower). Life is too short for tonguebite. Cheers from Denmark.

I’ve never had an issue with tongue bite… but I do have a lot of savinellis which are 6 mil and a lot of 9 mil pipes just because I liked the way they looked. All of them smoke great without a filter… I like a nice wide open draw. I have experimented with filters and I’ve found that the draw is tighter and I don’t get the “full” experience. I totally understand why people use filters as it does seem to mellow out the mouth feel… but I enjoy the “full blast” smoke I get without using them. It’s worth a try but it’s not for everyone. There is a little more maintenance that needs to be done simply because some gunk can start to build up in the filter area. Happy smokes buddy!

I use the balsa wood filters. I like them because you can get around 3 or 4 smokes out of one. They don't restrict the flow much if at all because they're triangular which leaves 3 small open gaps. I use them primarily because they do cut down on tongue bite slightly as do all filters and they also stop the occasional stray fleck of tobacco they can get sucked in quite unpleasantly.
@joeandtell

I was wondering about that with the filters. I do get bits of tobacco coming through the pipe from time to time. Never fun.

Filters are simply an issue of preference. I usually use them, but have some pipes that don’t accept them. I have to be more mindful if I use a pipe without a filter. If that’s your last pipe, you need to buy more pipes! 😂

I usually use an altra small pipes with an inner bowl diameter of 17-18mm and bowl depth of 20-25mm. I'll smoke strong Gawith and Hoggarth's blends such as brown and black ropes or the 3 shag cuts like dark bird's eye, Kendal Dark and Kentucky. These small pipes allows me to finish the strongestvof baccys

I also avoid pipes with filters, because they restrict the air flow. But if I have a filtered pipe I only use the balsa filter, otherwise there's more cleaning to do, because of the wider opening in the stem. And for dropping your logo during the video.

If you find a filtered pipe you like but don’t want to use filters, Savinelli has what you need. They make two adapters. If you find a pipe that takes 6mm filters, use their adapter that reduces the hole from 6mm to the standard 3mm. If you have a 9mm filtered pipe, you need their adapter that reduces the hole from 9mm to 6mm. Then you use the 6mm adapter to reduce the hole down to 3mm. These are very simple to use and I’ve tried them all. These adapters are about $1 each and usually come in a package of 5.
@joeandtell
@joeandtell 6 ай бұрын
Thank you. I’ve heard this from others as well. So it sounds like the pipes do not come with the adapters/converters?
@Stillypapabear
@Stillypapabear 6 ай бұрын
@@joeandtell some do. Brebbia, Vauen and most Savinelli’s. Simon @ LCS Briar pipes are all 9mm but offers an adapter at no cost. The Savinelli adapters are the best for any filtered pipe. The 9mm adapter takes the draft hole down to 6mm and the 6mm adapter slides into the 9mm adapter and reduces the draft hole down to 3mm.

For my 6mm pipes, i cut 2 pieces off a pipecleaner at about an inch, and stick them inthere besides eachother. it takes a good amount of the moisture out and reduces the tonguebite a lot. Yea the 6mm charcoal ones does seem to make a very tight draw even for me.

About half of my pipes have filter chambers. I do use the balsa or carbon filter inserts sometimes, but not that often because I can't get a pipe cleaner through while smoking. Most often, I just skip the filters and enjoy the smoke just the same. Balsa filters do a modest job of removing moisture; carbon filters don't seem to produce a noticeable difference. I'm interested to hear from other guys about their impressions: Does anyone think either filter type really improves the quality of the smoking experience or actually removes much tar (or whatever filters are supposed to remove)?

I own about half and half, of the half with filters included its split pretty evenly between the 3, 6 and 9 mm (some disposable and some intended as reusable) with a couple of anomalous 12 mm's thrown in. Personally I prefer unfiltered to filtered but am yet to find a pipe that doesn't allow me to simply remove the filter and touch wood have not experienced any that do not draw or clean any worse or differently from an unfiltered pipe once the filter is removed. That's just me though and I know no other smokers irl so while true for me its not much of a sample size. I'm aware of the rock type filters and the chicken mesh basket things but in all honesty as I've never bought a pipe including those systems I really haven't looked into it as I already prefer unfiltered for the time being at any rate.
