True, it's interesting to see how hard use knives fail. Though, he's way over the top for real world use and you sacrifice cutting ability and edge retention to get there. Plus harder blades resist deforming when you do hit something hard with it, given it's not enough to chip it. Over 3mm for a knife is too thick imo. Even machetes aren't over that most of the time.

@mikafoxx2717
@mikafoxx2717 3 ай бұрын
@@StevanOutdoorDamn! Surprised the robust handle held up. Mora runs their knives soft - too soft imo. Often 56-57 for them, but there's variability for sure. If it bends that much permanently it's not strong/hard enough imo for a knife optimized heat treatment. Use thicker geometry if it bends permanently and run it harder to make it strong and hard enough to resist. Maybe, at least, that's my opinion anyways.

@@ShoahBizstuff like 420HC and 12c27 is still pretty good for its hardness in a stainless, as good as medium high carbon steels at .5 -.6% carbon. @Creelyblades
@Creelyblades Жыл бұрын
if it was a quarter inch thick it would probably do OK, but 3V is not as tough as 8670, and their stock is generally an eighth of an inch or so. My standard folklore would not have held up under those conditions, and that knife is similar to a classic.

@@Creelyblades I love the way the carbides form in lower carbon steel. I have a 5160 Bowie knife that out performs 90% of my other blades in edge retention and durability. I only measure this off the times I have connected with sand or stone while using my blade. 5160 with a proper heat treat does not chip a fine edge and happily Sharpens back to scary. I love my Crucible Steels but continue to Abuse Ol' Bessy :)

@@ShoahBiz4340 if you want something that will legitimately never break. Edging the line between blade steel and structural steel with that one. 8670 is often used for car prints where they need to bend and return to straight, but he hella tough to withstand the abuse they go through daily, for possibly decades.

Great sportmansship to create a knife for JoeX's testing method and sending it to him. And where the Hultafors GK and Mora Robust did survive the test they did bend and your knife didn't even bend. I like that the cutout in the handle is really small leaving a lot of metal for handle strenght. The handle coming loose won't be an issue for me because for all my user knives I epoxy the handle scales and screws so nothing comes loose and no water can get between the scales and blank. As a long time survival instructor I would order this knife, if available, as a back up last resort knife. Of course I would also bring a thin stainless blade for food prep. Compared to the ESEE5 and BK2 this seems to be the better knife. The US military should contract you.

@@Mex_the_Fox it is a quarter inch thick, which is pretty thick, but certainly not unheard of, there a lot of companies out there that make blades in that stock thickness. I do not want to hate. But… this knife is primarily designed to survive Joe X. It is not designed to cut well. It is not designed to work well on real world use. To me this is kind of what misunderstanding Joe X leads to. I does not make sense to design a knife only for it to survive massive abuse. Yes, you will get a almost not destructible sharpend prybar. But not a knife. Not something that is nice to work with and that exells at doing stuff with it.
@Creelyblades
@Creelyblades 10 ай бұрын
That is a reasonable point. I would say this is not a Joe X only use case tool though. This will perform as well as any other Bushcraft knife with a scandyvex. It’s a very comfortable knife to hold and use. It’s not a slicer, but most Scandinavian grind Bushcraft aren’t. The two primary trade-offs with this is the weight and the lower edge holding of the 8670 steel. so I would push back that it is in fact, designed to work well in real world use, in this case, BushcraftIng. No doubt this is a bit of a novelty type, Knife, and if I were buying a bush, I would get the same design in .138”Magnacut, but the beast edition will perform just fine too.
@mikafoxx2717
@mikafoxx2717 3 ай бұрын
@@CreelybladesI'd say it's not much behind the mora Heavy Duty/Robust/Garberg, for use but it's done in a tougher steel, and possibly even stronger/harder HRC. I do kind of dislike thick stock though, above ~2-2.5mm gets pretty awful from slicing in a scandi. Scandi is meant for carving like a chisel grind. I prefer pukko grinds better, more acute flat with a small primary bevel, but still tough and good carver.

I wish more makers would look at JoeX's destruction tests in such light. They aren't disrespectful....every knife regardless of cost, materials or makers "elite" status level in the knife world, is going to have a breaking point. Knowing that is valuable information. Instead, we now no longer have JoeX....I hope we find out who is the cause, and if it is a maker, they get shunned from the knife community.
