It’s worth noting that, in the months since this video came out, some more information has been made available about the sequence of events that led to Tennant’s return. While the conclusion I came to at the time isn’t fully accurate, the broad strokes of “it was never a case of Tennant sidelining Ncuti” remain true. What’s less true is that RTD was forced to bring Tennant back to fill this slot, we now know it was just something he wanted to do anyway.

I could honestly watch David as The Doctor for at least the next 10 years. I couldn't get enough of him when he was originally The Doctor as he is my Doctor. And because RTD is back as the showrunner, I am confident that the show will get back on track and be more like it used to be when he brought it back originally.

He'll either bring it closer to the old day, or do what he actually did in the old days which was majorly evolve it to fit the times. I wonder if it's more likely that he'll do the latter, rather than return to 2006, or if 2006 is his standard that he's trying to recapture

I too would not be bother for 10 series of David Tennant as the 14th doctor, at all, it's indeed the best doctor. I agree that it looks like the show is getting back like it used to be but modernized or course, I hope so.

Let’s not forget that having a doctor leave the show after 1-3 seasons, regenerate inside the tardis, and spending their first episode fixing the damaged tardis and figuring out who they were got pretty tired and predictable. I give rtd respect for actually surprising me. At least some of the specials will attempt to explain why it happened.

@@Joe_Brennan_ I agree , a lot off new fans don’t remember just how unloved the program was by the general public back in 1989 , so a lot off the modern criticisms is nothing new. I’ve seen videos saying that it’s too late and that we are past the point of saving the show. But as you say Russell reinvented the show once before and he will do again. I think the return of Tennent will be a nice last hurrah before moving on to the new ears. The power of the doctors the first time had watched a program in about three years I never made a conscious decision to start watching it I just wasn’t that keen to watch and I kept putting it off.I’ve always felt if I’m watching it I don’t enjoy it anymore it’s not necessarily that it’s bad it’s just it’s not being made for a 40 odd year-old guy anymore.

The BBC needed Tennant to come back: a LOT of fans have checked out because the Capaldi years were very hit or miss, while the Whitaker years were awful. But everyone recognizes how great the Tennant years were. Getting the fans to come back will show that they once again have a decent writer/showrunner in charge, and will literally bridge between the stuff most people didn't like to Tennant (who everyone loves), to maybe giving the new Doctor a chance.
@EleneDOM
@EleneDOM 11 ай бұрын
The Tennant years were great, and I thought only one story during that time really failed. However, I can't figure out why so many people hate on the ensuing Doctors. Things change and evolve, and there's nothing wrong with that. Every time there's a new Doctor we have to get used to that person; long-term Whovians should be accustomed to that by now. That's the nature of this incredibly long-running story. And I loved Jodie Whittaker.

Bingo. THIS is the kind of history Doctor Who needed to recapture it's buzz, the return of a previous Doctor, specifically David Tennant's. No one gave a shit about "the first female Doctor!", just like no one cared about "the first minority Doctor!". Believe it or not, people watch shows because they're telling good stories, not pushing weird social narratives that have been wholesale rejected by the majority of people (see the epic failures of recent - Star Wars, Amazon's Lord of the Rings, the entire MCU since the all-female Endgame scene and many other shows or movies that don't even deserve to have their names remembered) David Tennant's return is basically retconning out Capaldi and the female doctor, as if they never happened, while returning to the literal perfect incarnation of Doctor Who in David Tennant, as well as the last time the show really felt *GREAT*. Instead of jumping from the terrible last Doctor to the new actor, this new guy actually has a chance to earn fan's endearment, while sharing the screen with Tennant - unquestionably the most popular *and* most successful incarnation of Doctor Who. No one who isn't already watching was going to give the new Doctor a chance just because it was another self-proclaimed "historic" first. But with Tennant back? The buzz has returned, IMMEDIATELY, like the last decade hadn't even happened. There's literally a 10ish minute piece on the show/Tennant on BBC right now, getting as much coverage as anything besides the Gaza War. This is the best possible thing to happen to the show and Doctor Who, the character, other than maybe David Tennant returning full time and just completely dropping the whole "the Doctor regenerates all of the time and becomes a new actor" schtick, completely.
@Flichter
@Flichter 11 ай бұрын
Completely forgot Matt Smith's Doctor, mostly because he's so terrible in House of Dragons lol. For all I care, they could retcon his entire run out of the series too. Matt Smith was pretty good, but he wasn't David Tennant and his face is honestly just too weird to not constantly make you break the third wall by noticing that he looks like a mannequin come to life. Tennant is prime Doctor.

Even though Tennant is my Doctor, Smith will always be my fav story of the Doctor and his companions. I LOVED the whole Family aspect with Amy, Rory and River! Tennant pulled me in and made me a fan. He made me want to go back to learn the lore and dig up any info on the Doctor I could. I tried to love the next two Doctors, but the show changed too much too quick and it stopped feeling like the show I fell in love with. I eventually stopped getting excited for the next season and then lost touch completely. I am definitely one of the fans that will come back for Tennant and hopefully rekindle my love for the show I fell in love with so long ago.

Bringing back David Tennet is a brilliant move in my opinion. He was a fan favorite who really brought the show to life after Eccleston's performance of a man who was healing. Tennet made the doctor so much more fun again, and gave a thrill of adventure that so many wanted to see, and I'm sure doing so again is an intentional move. A lot of people lost interest in doctor who over the years because of poor writing on the part of Chibnal, who decided to ruin what was some 58-59 years worth of continuity in one story line that came out of left field. Bringing back RTD and David Tennet, even just for a short time on Tennet's part, will help bring back an audience that had been left disappointed by poor story telling, and give the show the life and hype it needs for Ncuti's introduction as the doctor, and allow him the audience he deserves

That line also predicted her season, too, the one after Capaldi. In it, it was confirmed they are not a Time Lord, they are a Timeless Child, aka literally just God of Gallifrey. They created the Time Lords, and the Time Lords have only 12 regenerations, while they do not. They also do not have to change appearance, they choose to. Which is why we have Tennant back. Not only because of an easy business venture, but also because it is factual to the lore of The Doctor. I do hope they do more with the Master's facts, though. He is two, not one. He is natural, a born Time Lord who can only regenerate 12 times. He is also unnatural, and undead soul capable of possession bodies of others to continue living past his 12 regenerations. If they're running with the recent lore of The Doctor, they absolutely should return the original old lore of the Master again.

BS! If Tennant was the topping on a phenomenal season, I would be thrilled but, Tennant topping off a huge pile of shit, I am not excited, I am upset. I am upset with the year and a half of garbage that was supposed to be Dr. Who and tossing me Tennant doesn't make-up for what they have done. I will force myself to watch the first one, it better be the best Who I've ever friggin' seen, to make-up for what they did to me, if not, I'm out. If all three are acceptable, I will try the first episode of the new Who but, again, it better knock my socks off. In the last two seasons, is there a single episode that really sticks in your mind as good? I can recall great episodes of all the Doctors in the modern era but I can hardly remember any episode in the last two seasons and I watched them twice. Shows that they are so boring and shitty, you don't even remember them. Capaldi did a fantastic job, if only he had some kind of a script to work with, the show would have been great. Jody also had a crap script but, she didn't even try to do anything with it, she just read the lines and played along - terrible, terrible, terrible.

And for me, his era (started by Chris Eccleston) was the one that was most easy to watch. He brought more emotion, established great relationships and story twists with other characters and events in time. Some of which they have still come back to in the years since. @@Finsirith Yeah, doubtful that applies to anyone 40 or under. I was born in the 80s and didn't really attain consciousness until the 90s, in which my first exposure to the Doctor was Paul McGann in that movie that I kinda liked at the time, but my dad certainly didn't -- because he'd seen Tom Baker, etc. The first Doctor I _cared_ about was Christopher Eccleston, who was foolish to give up the mantle so soon, I think, because I really liked his crankier, twitchier Doctor, and he could've really solidified his place in Whoverse Hsitory instead of being "that guy before David Tennant" for so many people. But his mistake gave way for David Tennant, who took no time at all to earn his place as _my_ Doctor, as well as the Doctor of pretty much everyone in my age bracket who was watching the show. With all the respect in the world for Tom Baker (and Sylvester McCoy, who I think is underrated), and the people who grew up with him as _the_ Doctor for them, there is no doubt that, for anyone who wasn't sentient in the 80s, David Tennant is and is deservedly _the_ Doctor.

This feels a lot like when Eleven called Twelve and Capaldi more or less said "I've been waiting for this for so long, please give me a chance" and Matt Smith was more or less saying "Yes that's the Doctor even if you aren't happy". But it could be, like you said, RTD tying up loose threads and wanting to actually have Ten able to be "ready" to go.

I hope narrativly, they treat 10 version 3.0 as a sort of learning experience for the Doctor, something they need to learn in that form that they missed first time around. And potentially I see the possibility that because 13 has gone through.... alot of trauma, the doctor needed to regenerate to a form that allows them to process it all properly, and the mind decided that 10 was the thing needed. Also remember what the Curator said in the 50th anniversary. Edit: I also really enjoy the idea that because 10 was so upset that he only got 3 years (its 3 years in universe right?) That he forced himself in again accidentally from the doctors subconscious, and that his arc will be realizing he needs to let go.

I actually think using nostalgia to bring in old fans or even new fans is important especially to a show like Doctor Who. Bringing back old foes, characters, storylines, etc we haven’t seen in a long awhile is really quite cool once in awhile. While it’s also important to have new things too and originality obviously. Having a mix of old and new has always been Doctor Who’s brand and should continue to be.
@tonzik884
@tonzik884 2 жыл бұрын
Showrunners and the like nowadays use nostalgia to bring actual fans of their shows back, but then they, for some reason (I said sarcastically), just fuck it up completely. I can't think of many rebooted, remade or sequel to a show or movie that didn't give big middle finger to the original show/movie and its fans. Blade Runner 2049 is a good example of building on a previous story without shitting on said previous story. People are far too forgiving to writers and showrunners for absolutely ruining some iconic or otherwise great franchises. Same with this - Tennant will forever be my favorite Doctor, but even he won't bring me back to the show after what has already transpired. The damage has already been done and I've very little hope of this bridge ever being crossable again.

To me it feels like it's hitting multiple points: finishing up some loose threads for Tennant, celebrating the show's history, a little bit of fan service to let the fans know the show is in good hands and finally to prepare it for the next phase and an exciting new Doctor. The key for me is the fact that Tennant is back for a very limited time, not a full series. It feels like RTD and the team know what they are doing. It seems like Gatwa will be a part of the specials AS WELL, based on the teaser. Plus the stuff you said in the video. All of this leaves me excited for the 60th and beyond. I truly can't wait for the 15th Doctor to arrive after a brief period of celebration.

Tennant's Doctor regenerated saying he didn't want to go. A character arc for his in-between Doctor could be accepting that his time has come, and regenerating without regrets. This was a very smart move in MANY ways. The 60th anniversary is having a previous Doctor the center of the story instead of Gatwa trying to get his footing in the roll with all the 60th framework going on. This gives Fans that left after Capaldi a chance for some nostalgia and might give Gatwa a better chance of keeping those fans instead of coming right after Whittaker who was much less popular then Capaldi and draw them back. I feel that Tenant was the best choice over any other including my personal favorite Smith. At this point I've made peace with anything from past seasons that I found questionable, however Donna's ending has never sat well with me. Because the Doctor can go back and change things that they thought couldn't be touched (50th anniversary). I'm hoping they go the route of the Doctor has matured and knows things now that can change her fate.

David Tennant and RTD was such a ground breaking duo for doctor who. The script with Davids acting made every episode feel like it ment something and even characters we only got to see for one episode left us with emotional scars(silence in the library, blink and the Madame pompadour episode). The emotional development in his run was outstanding and led to scenes that couldn't work with anyone else. I honestly feel his exit was one of a kind and could live with him not coming back, doesn't mean I don't want him too, but I'm satisfied with his emotional final episode.

Absolutely agreed. Those three episodes (well, four-SITL was two episodes together), were probably the highest of heights that the series ever reached in my opinion, and they all happened with the same doctor. By the way, The Girl in the Fireplace was the Madame de Pompadour episode.

Personally, I like that David Tennant is back even if only for a short while. And having him back to bridge the gap between Jody and the next true regeneration makes logical sense given it is the 60th Anniversary year of the show. Scheduling conflicts happen and at least they’re doing something that could give the 10th some proper resolution to David’s final line as the 10th in the meantime while they wait for Jody’s real successor in the role to finish the project he is currently involved with.

I grew up with Matt Smith as my doctor and I loved the show and had all the box sets for his run. Then I went back and watched David Tennants run and saw how amazing they were. I even didn't mind Capaldi, and stuck through it until the end, but I didn't even get 2 episodes into Jodie's run before giving up (which is a shame because she's an amazing actress) as I didn't like Chibnall's writing. But with this move, they've got my, and I'm sure many other fans' attention again. It's a good move to bring back the original fan base for what will hopefully be a great new era of Who

Matt Smith used to be my favourite when I started the show (my first episode was the impossible astronaut at 6 years old). But when I did go back I watched Tennant, he became my favourite. I really liked Capaldi's cybermen episodes, especially the final story with Bill. For me it was a fun darker tone to the show. I wonder if they'll try to turn away from the low stakes of Jodie's era or try to emulate Tennant's era again.

I'm so glad to hear David Tennent is coming back. I don't care if it's short term or long time, he's back and it makes me happy. This bridge could be an anniversary series with Christopher Eccleston, Paul McGann and Sylvester McCoy along with David Tennent. And Rose, Billie Piper, she is more important than any of the other females shown in this video. I know it would be hard to put her back in, but she is a must.
@andyblake9978

Well said, NJD. There are various ways to get Rose back, the most obvious being that Ten told Mickey that the Time Lords had the secret of easy travel between parallel universes. Back then, he didn't know Gallifrey was saved in a pocket at the end of the universe, but now he has Gallifrey's address and there's no-one to stop him from salvageing the tech. Especially if, say, a fleet of Dalek voidspheres had broken through into Pete's world or some such crisis. However, I wonder if it's not the case that the Metacrisis Doctor has somehow got switched across the Void while Ncuti's incarnation unaccountably finds himself in Rose's universe? This kind of resembles another scenario I thought up years ago that someone called the Soul Drain theory: when Ten "didn't want to go", didn't he seem to go into a trance for a moment? Maybe he telepathically transmitted his entire Ten persona across the Void into the body of his parallel-world twin? Think of it as the full download after a partial download at the Metacrisis. That left the original Doctor's body mindless for a split-second before he regenerated a whole new mind for himself from the memories stored in his energy. And so, I told myself, maybe Rose got her man for sure (selfsame original soul), while the Eleventh Doctor really was a brand-new person. I never thought until Jodie's exit that someone might actually run with that cross-universe mind swap idea. Now I wonder if RTD might do something rather like it?

I think bringing DT back to play 14 with the Celestial Toymaker is a fantastic move that will draw back sizeable audiences and use the 60th Anniversary as a platform for the launch of the15th Doctor era. The last time I was looking forward with this much enthusiasm to new Who was the 5th Doctor’s first episode. I was heartbroken to see Tom’s Doctor fall to his death, but hopeful when I learned that Tristan (my favourite character from All Creatures Great and Small) was taking over. Gotta love RTD. Just hope he gets his buddy Sally Wainwright to do some writing for the series to come.

As a 62 year old Aussie, I was not into Dr Who much over the decades but when David was on, I got right into it. So much so, I got the DVD for his performances in it. Must say most, practically all the other doctors have not kept my interest. I don't know this new doctor they plan to have, but no, doesn't appeal to me either. So I will definitely watch the few extra eps with David when they appear in Australia, but nothing else. David has the IT factor!!!

Forward momentum? The entire Chibnall era has been awful, no momentum, just a quagmire of poor writing. We need to be allowed to let this dreadful era fade from memory, and David is a great pallet cleanser, and allow fans to enjoy the show again in the knowledge that the new Doctor is here and in safe hands with RTD
