It should actually sound better and a bit louder/ more brutal than the RS competitors according other comparisons I've seen. Compared to E63s and M5/M8 comp, the RS6/RS7 have the worst sound in my opinion. Although none of the new models have a really good sound. Well aftermarket exhausts could do the job and improve the sound quality and make them more 'bassy' or so..

Unlike Porsche, BMW offers cars with similar power and straight-line performance to its M Competition cars in much cheaper packages. It`s just very hard to justify the M8 Comp over the M850i Gran Coupe and the M5 Comp over the M550i. Same goes for the M5 versus the M8. When the 440xi Gran Coupe comes out, it`ll be a fraction of the price but still be very quick on the street.

Some fair comments and I have not driven M5 or M8 for that matter but have gone through the 2 series..220D then the M240i and now the M2C. The biggest difference in the full fat M car is the road handling. Yes you may not notice the straight line speed between the M240i and the M2C but put it on a twisty UK road and its night and day. Dont get me wrong the 240i is probably a better choice for 80% of the time.

Absolutely worth it. I'm going to get an F90 M5 recently because I don't have that much money so I want the most HP and luxury for the price. But the M8 series look so good and even perform better. If I'm super rich I'm definitely going to get the M8GC.

Jonathan, you are completely right but when they've been registered they'll be available for 80k. In fact there are plenty on the BMW used site for ~90k at the moment. In another 6 months they'll be cheaper again. My M6 was about a year old with 4k miles on it and it was half pricing in 2018 - I'm expecting the same thing to happen with these. A great car in almost every situation, but definitely not the best at anything. Good to see you on here too BTW :)

Really great review Joe. Honest appraisal of a bloody expensive, but stunning car. Not that I could afford it, but I wouldn't pick that car for the fuel economy alone, (yes picky I know) but let's face it, you could pass anything on the road, except a petrol station. The panamera Hybrid, or the RS6, with it's cylinder deactivation would mean more bang for your buck. But also more time behind the wheel and not the pump.

Was debating trading in my 2019 M6 Gran Coupe, but for the HUGE price increase, it doesn't offer much extra, sure the AWD is neat, but I'd probably spend most of my time in RWD anyway since it has more character... Interior wise, I'd say the M8 is easily one of the best looking cars but again, every M in the G generation has that look, whereas the M6 is still stunning in its own right Exterior wise, that's where I find the silhouette of the M6 so much better looking Anyway, that's my 2 cents, maybe in the future when they rethink the pricing strategy since these cars are on heavy discounts due to piss poor demand lol

I'd definitely keep your M6. They didn't make a lot of those & if u keep an eye on milage, the re-sale should start going back up. Especially when everyone starts resenting their new M3 & M4's (due to ugly buck teeth grills). Maybe I'm just getting too old & unaccepting of change?

@Scottie Copasetic Actually BMW make a lot of M6 4 door. The exact number is 6719 M6 Sedan, 4515 Coupe and 4318 Convertible. M Power sales figures at this price is sure not that good compared to AMG but M6 GC sold better than you think.

Back then M6 also got a big discount. The interior design of M8 is even more unique than the last generation M6 in my opinion. You heard Joe also has a similar feeling. And performancewise M8 is just killing it. M6 never gave people the impression of mindblowing performance advantage over the rivals but M8 did.

Its far more expensive than the RS7, there is no more CLS63 variant from Mercedes, it can't match the AMG GT4 door in looks or performance, its in a market where the M5 offers the same performance at a steep discount. Just thought I'd point out the fact that every negative you mentioned comes with the nature of this beast. This car, to my mind, at least, is a heart purchase. This is what you get if BMW follows form over function. There'd be always compromises. It's to be celebrated imo.

Thanks Joe for a great comparison. I had an M6 Grand Coupe and now have an M5 Competition you nailed my thoughts on the 2 cars to a T. Grand coupe just special to look at, a really pretty car. The M5 looks tougher but after driving them both the M5 just represented much better value for money, and while all cars depreciate the M6(now discontinued) and the M8(looks like the 6 series replacement) here in Australia get completely smashed on resale. This car is just under $400K here new. Is this crash in resale for the 8 series same in the UK?
