It’s saddening, disturbing, and concerning there is so much instability and chaos in Cuba and Haiti. Basically in the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico…where a lot of Maritime trade goes in and out of. I fear a sudden rise of piracy, illegal immigration, and other problems at our literal doorstep. How to stabilize things without trying to intervene…..because it’s clear direct intervention does not help, it breeds resentment instead!😓

My wife is Cuban (lives here in the US now), but we visit a few times a year. Your observations are spot on! Long story short, Cuba’s GDP doesn’t begin to cover its socialist agenda’s requirements, and its sources of global welfare have run out. Cuba’s history of debt defaulting with other countries has made it like that dysfunctional uncle that can’t manage himself, and lives off handouts. Cuba is dying a slow death, and the embargo isn’t to blame, despite what the government attempts to tell its people - even the Cuban people know this propaganda is dishonest and incorrect.

@@Wasengenyie The US is the closest and largest potential trading partner for Cuba. Without the US, their partners need to go halfway across the world in order to help them. Other countries CAN trade with them, but since they have a history of stealing from other countries when it's convenient for them, it becomes a risk I don't think most are willing to take. Would you help someone that's going to steal from you, or would you rather just let them flounder?

I am Canadian. I've lived in Havana for 3 month period while working there. I've also worked there on many different two and three week stints. I'm quite familiar with the way things operate. You said that the US embargo is hindering them from getting parts. That's BS all their power plants and infrastructure was built by Russians they need parts from Russia not the US. I would really like to see Cuba be free from communism. If this continues I might see this in my lifetime. just a thought.

Repair parts for Soviet built power plants (that run on oil) are not available from the US. That technology is decades old and obsolete. Nothing short of new power plants with new transmission and distribution infrastructure will reverse the decades of neglect. That costs money, real money, not phony rubles or cuban pesos. The one thing Cuba has perfected over the decades is arrogance and disdain for the west and the US in particular. Insults and harsh rhetoric won't win friends or charity for old revolutionary criminals. If America was so ugly and hurtful, why have hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees risked life and limb to flee Castro's paradise and make a new home in the United States? USA has embargoed Cuban since the revolution. CIA tried to assassinate their leader and USA even tried to invade the island to topple the government (Bay of Pigs). Wouldn’t you be angry at the USA too? It's unfair for them but not our problem. If they couldn't self-sustain 11 million people, they shouldn't have had 11 million people. I know it's sad to hear but we are animals, and we fit a niche. When the environment is unable to support the local population, it dies until an equilibrium is met. Sure, we could send aid to Cuba, but how long will that take? Will it be indefinite? And for what? What does Cuba offer us. There is nothing wrong with importing resources, but they must offer something in return and how long will that investment return? It might never return. And in the meantime, the people of Cuba will suffer. We would be giving them hope and a slow painful death. Many would suffer now but I say its better to suffer now and less suffer in the long run. Too much of the world has grown endlessly and exploited the environment to its breaking point. And we are surprised when mass deaths happen when those logistics to keep people surviving are strained? Its insanity to think resources are endless. It takes time, energy, and money to transport things to other people. That HAS to come from somewhere and too much demands will cause it to run out too quickly. Cuba made their bed. Embargoes were placed on them but its their governments job to make sure it runs well. And if people were having too many kids that their society couldn't support, that is their fault.

What a sad story. I was in Varadero in the fall of 2022, and things were bad. I was already pissed about not having Pina Colada because they couldn't get any supply of milk. And there was no hot water to shower because the generator broke (I stayed in a five-star resort). Now, it's far worse.

I have been to Cuba numerous times, and from my last experience in 2024, the differences are quite stark from previous trips. I'll give some good things I saw first. There are small businesses that have opened up. They sell goods, services, etc to tourists and locals alike. It also feels like it's thriving, as people are more inclined to spend at local places rather than government congolomerates. I think Cubans are great at capitalism, they just need the government to get out of the way. The Bad. The power situation is very perilous and you have no idea when it's going to get cut out. It would honestly be far more serious if Cuba was more industrialized and modern, but Cubans already have adjusted life to it, meaning they know they cannot grow and have accepted it as a fact of life. Food wise, they are greatly limited in choice and the joke many cubans make is "Rice and Pork, or Pork and rice?" and that's to tourists. For many Cubans it's mostly staple foods and some native fruits to sustain their diet. Many Cubans are very unfortunate and in rural areas the poverty is worse than any caribbean Island I have seen. Honestly, despite all of this, Cubans are still proud and grateful people. They have the spirit to become a truly amazing, thriving country. Their people are very ingenuitive, smart, and have a great work ethic. I hope the communists slowly are pushed out with pragmatists who can finally let this island nation truly shine.

I (German) am currently in Cuba for holiday. Have been in Havanna today. Every (significant) part of infrastructure was build before the revolution. The buildings people are living in are in a crazy state. I felt insecure for second’s inside, what about living there all the time. And people don’t even bother to look for public work since a doctor earns not enough to fill a car just once (30-50€ maybe) or buy enough food. Crazy to see what socialism does to people and still politicians are calling for similar measures in countries (such as Germany). Power to the people, defund the government.

We've been to Cuba twice; once in March 2013 and once in March 2024 ... what a difference. In 2013 we had no issues really. The food wasn't that great but as they say, you don't go to Cuba for the food. The place was packed, the staff/people were fantastic, the service was amazing, etc. The hotel had a music/dance show each night. It was great. In 2024, it was noticeably different. We stayed in Havana for three nights and had a great time, you can walk anywhere. However it seemed like I was the only white person on the street and was the best target for all those old cars that were just sitting around because there were no tourists. The resort was less than half full. Lots of the staff were great, but it seemed like lots were barely tolerating tourists. The buffet food was so-so, but the a-la-carte restaurants were HORRIBLE, 2 of the 4 meals we had were not editable. My wife described it as they were "cooking with anger". The didn't have eggs or bread for 2 of the 4 days. We've been there twice, I can't image what its like now. So we're going to DR next week instead. If 40% of their tourists are from Canada, and Sunwing is not flying there anymore ... its game over.

I visited Cuba in January last year for a holiday, very strange place! The hotel never had sugar, butter or potatoes and the food was very basic. Havana is a wonderful place to visit but everything runs on the black market, even the fuel for taxis. Supermarkets had rows and rows of the same product, usually nappies and bottles of cider for some reason but almost nothing else. It was like being in a parallel universe. I did wonder how the country runs

Horses and donkeys also require 'fuel' we just call it fodder instead of fuel. What they save on oil they will need to make up for in edibles. I don't know enough about the state of their ecology and agriculture to know if they would be able to feed that many animals, not even including the fact they would first have to get said animals first. Unless you buy them from abroad (which requires foreign currency they don't have) they will need to build up domestic herds for quite a while I imagine. A donkey can only produce a certain amount of offspring in a certain amount of time after all.

As a Canadian this is the first year in over 10 that I am not going to Cuba. Last year I went and once leaving the resort, everywhere I went people were asking me for money - even the elderly and children. Everyone openly calls the government "the mafia". Taxis were messed up with dirty gas. The final straw for me was no running water. I love the people of cuba but until they overthrow the goons, I don't dare to go back.

Just a note I am retired from the energy industry and in UK we where forecasting "brownouts" ( Last PC word for power cuts) we have been kicking the ball down the road as politicians have argued about new nuclear power stations . To be completely honest now we have lost our last coal fired power station we are reliant on the cable from Norway and another from France, So in winter when the sun don't shine much and the wind is either still or blowing a gale we are just a cable cut away from no electricity. What would make more sense is for the Cuban government to acknowledge the expropriation of property was wrong but they are clearly in no position to make restitution and in any case, it all happened a long time ago. 2015 a Canadian associate that has been managing the refinery at the far east side of the island saw this coming hard: a DECADE ago. Food provided went south, service slipped, everything got extremely hard to source. He was about to retire to Vancouver island and had most of his career in Cuba and loved the place, the people . But this "ain't nuthin new". inevitble.

Forcing Cuba to ally with America's enemies for protection and economic aid is kinda the most stupid thing America can possibly do, from a geopolitics standpoint. A mistake that almost led to nuclear destruction in 1962, yet nothing was learned from the mistake. If the U.S. allowed Cuba to freely trade with it, Cuba would become hopelessly dependent on the U.S. w/o any chanche to reach a level where Cuba might have leverage over the U.S. since it's economy would be only tourism and low-end manufacturing. The smartest thing America could do right now, is build a power cable from Florida to Cuba and supply Cuba with its cheap electricity. Cuba would become instantaniously dependent on the U.S.

The grid has become highly instable to the point that the other European countries are considering to kick Germany out of the common grid. Cuba is heavily investing into solar, but the thing about solar is, it aint work at nighttime.
