Honestly the industry shifting AWAY from hip hop is a blessing in disguise. Now the money hungry scheming artist can move along since there's no more fast money and the artist who actually care don't have to succumb to BS industry standards anymore. Bout to be a a big restart for rap culture ⚡

A lot of solid points y’all making. I think it’s the same across almost all art forms. The way “art” is being created now, supplied now, & consumed now has caused the actual quality of art to suffer imo. Is there still great stuff out there? Yes. But is there anything timeless? I don’t know. It’s sad. Everything feels like a money grab. I also feel like the talent level in general isn’t as high as it used to be.

Anyone who sold out (or maybe the new term should be BOUGHT IN) to the industry and commercialism gave in to the idea of mass producing this basic, low quality run of the mill shit as fast as possible for max profit. Everything the older artists used to talk about has come to pass. Right before he dropped Voodoo, D'Angelo said in an interview that folks was letting them turn Black music in general into some club shit. When David Banner was doing promo for his album 'Death of a Pop Star' almost fifteen years ago I distinctly remember him saying at one point that in the direction we're headed we won't have another Michael Jackson or even another Chris Brown. The fact that everything went in the direction it did in the ensuing years is crazy in hindsight....

They want the bag and attention but nobody is making music with the intention of this living past the next few years. There’s been so much music that was “hot” the last 5 years that nobody goes back to because it was just a moment. They work with the producers that’s hot right now with the flow that’s hot right now with a feature from the other artists who’s hot right now, everything is to focused on right now and not 10, 20, 100 years from now. Streaming is convenient but sometimes I miss the days where you actually had to go and buy somebody’s single or album. Artist really had to build their audience then. Artists complain about proper compensation from streaming (and rightfully so) but a lot of artist today wouldn’t survive the pre-streaming era cuz they don’t make good enough music for ppl to want to buy.

I’ve been seeing this conversation a lot lately. Music has always been like this though. Especially in hip hop, where the genre literally sets trends. Most artist can only ask for a 3 year peak. In the history of the genre, maybe every 5 years you’ll get an artist that can have a decade long run. I’m 30. The amount of rappers that’s came into the game “Hot” and completely fell off 2 summers later is more than I care to remember. It has little to do with streaming. Most musicians have a career lifespan of maybe 4 years (as far as peak popularity).

As Afrobeats and Latin music becomes more popular, the only hip hop artist surviving this is gonna be the artist with real SOLID fanbases, I.e Drake, Nicki, Kendrick, Cole, even Travis, Durk etc. they've built cult like followings to the point they can put out one song a year if they wanted and their fanbase is still gonna keep them a float. I think artist need to really start building their fan bases from the ground up again and stop thinking social media numbers and hype means anything. How are you a "top artist" and selling less than 50k album sales or can't sell out tour tickets 🤨

You have to want to be great. You rarely hear new generation rappers say “I’m the Best” they want to be the richest or the realest or the deadliest or the most gangsta but best rapper seems to be low on their list of priorities, and to be great sometimes you have to explore new sounds and genres and a lot of these rappers aren’t creative enough or just too lazy to experiment. That’s why the previous generation: Future, Drake, Kendrick,Cole still dominates. They take risks musically and they’re vulnerable enough to where fans actually care about them

All throughout the history of Rap music, rappers only hold the title of the hottest in the game for a very short period of time. Even Somme of the greatest rappers of all time. Big Daddy Kane was only in the top contender discussion in 88-89’, the DOC was only really hot in 89’. Biggie dropped in 94’ and was the man, but he took a back seat to features in 95-96’ and Life After Death literally didn’t drop until after he died. Snoop was at his zenith in 92-94’, by the time 96’ came he definitely wasn’t the hottest in the game anymore and by the time he signed with No Limit he was already a legacy rapper in a game where you old once you hit 30. Snoop never recreated the feeling of the Chronic or Doggystle the way Jay dropped classics well into his career like the Blueprint. Ironically, the rappers who have consistently put out high quality music over the span of decades and never really fell off were underground mainstream dudes never mentioned in GOAT discussions like Ghostface and AZ.

Completely agree. The unfortunate part is, I don't think any of the genres out here are as strong as Hip Hop. Afrobeats and Reggaeton are already in fatigue mode and they're very romantic genres. In this era, hip hop and rock work well because there's less romance and less simps who want to impress. So Afrobeats and Reggaeton won't work well for most audiences.

Joe you and your machine hyped up the babys, and the durks. Maybe if he dont hype up mid level talent as greats we would have more consistent stuff. The media loved those dudes

Problem with rap is that it’s weak right. Cut and stepped on like when the line won’t answer your call and you’re down to your last with a heavy distribution flow. Squeezing the last drop out of mediocre sounds, tactics and focusing more image & content than the art of this thing. Whereas, Afrobeats is strong because the African diaspora is strong and the music feels good like Caribbean music and it’s constantly changing and being experimented with. It’s not stale. It’s only a wave to Ice because he wasn’t aware of what was going on until BOOM it was everywhere. Like a wave.

People were saying Lil Baby was passing Drake. Charlemagne said that as well. You need albums that people connect with for years to come. Look at Drake’s tour. People are singing along word for word for songs that came out years ago.

I think Latin music has been around for a while, and it is a different market than hip hop. Pitbull and Daddy Yankee have been doing latin music for years. Big Pun also did latin music.

The Latin artist are taking over. That’s all you hear in the clubs. And there’re a lot of Latinos in the US and around the world, don’t forget that.
