LS Swapped Defender | Custom Fan Shroud Fabrication

Today we get that front drive/cooling system finally sorted out. For real this time.
We make ourselves a fancy little custom aluminum fan shroud to use that dual pass radiator much more efficiently to cool the 430 hp LS3 V8 off.

Awesome rad fan cowl, I just love being able to make use of CAD (cardboard aided design) for jobs like these LOL. Great to see the LS Defender coming along nicely, keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing you tackle the bespoke wiring loom, as this will be one step closer to that V8 bursting into life. Yes, back to the original CAD. These projects make me miss my cnc plasma but it’s not so bad now that I’m not feeling as pressed for time on projects anymore. So kind of enjoyable to make it in a more old school fashion. Sasha has been spending a touch more time outside again as the temp slowly creeps up.

I was happy to see that you didn't mount the fan with the zip ties through the radiator. Doing so made havoc on my RR radiator and fan. It is a stupid way to install the fan. I think my fan got caught in the radiator when hitting a pothole hard.

Yes, the fan manufacturers kind of make it seem like that is the way you are supposed to mount them by sending the zip ties along with them. That doesn’t sound like a fun thing to have happen haha.

Hey bro... make sure to space the shroud back just a bit as for not to let the verticle sides contact any of the cooling rows... well Joe, as you know me.... Don't ask me how I know it's very important! I had about a 275 reason experience where I acquired this knowledge! Lol Brand new Rad with JB weld onna few rows! Oddly it lasted a long time!!

The tabs should always have a radius to prevent cracking.

I have grown to love the rivnuts the D2 has a lot of them in there now from mods being done. Do need a better tool for it though the HF works but can be finicky

I’m going to start looking for a replacement tool as well at some point. The Astro I use has a broken rear mandrel but/knob for unthreading. So I just use a pliers to spin the mandrel out now.

Great job as always! I've been looking to get a rivnut tool and kit. Suggestions in what I should look for in a quality piece?

I would look at how the nut/knob for unthreading the mandrel back out after pressing it in. I broke that early on in the life of the Astro one I use. Outside of that I like the way this Astro has worked. I was kind of eyeing up the Harbor Freight one as it has a metal knob on the back side instead of the mandrel. But there kit only goes to M8 and I sometimes set M10 and M12 rivnuts.
