I want to clarify about the structural loads on the fence. A fence post is a cantilevered column which is calculated using the total load on the fence laterally usually a wind load from 10 to 50 pounds per square foot plus the load of the gate putting a moment force on the post. But for a typical post that has a panel on each side you've got a load of let's say 20 lb per square foot lateral wind load times six feet tributary times six feet high =720/2=moment of 360ft. lbs. You need this weight and concrete and or bearing of the post against the soil laterally and compression or friction to overcome this load. Basically it's like a seesaw which the load of the person is magnified by the distance from the pivot point or a moment arm.

I got one better than that… the guy behind my house had to put in a new privacy fence due to obscene storm that knocked down his fence. He has to have the fence because he has an in ground pool. When they replaced it, the posts are not in the ground with concrete and the fence actually blows in the wind. I have been trying to dig on my side to add concrete to the posts on my side because it’s definitely going to come down in next big storm. The worse part is they installed the panels 8 inches off the ground so that it would be even across the top of the fence. They cut into a tree to make a slot to put a fence panel and based on where that panel was installed they kept the fence at that height. It is a mess. They also used L brackets to attach the panels to the posts because they didn’t place the posts in a straight line. Some using only 1 screw in each bracket. Not cheap stuff either, they used cedar panels and posts. I am am in the process of placing cinder blocks with caps at the base of the fence because the guy has stuff piled against the fence to try and disguise the gap. That crap is coming though to my yard.I don’t care if the cinder blocks rot his fence, I’m just pissed at the fact he allowed a licensed fence company to put up his fence in that manner. I have a very small dog that can actually walk under the gap so I can’t even leave her alone in the yard while I garden because she can get through to that other yard and he has no fence across his driveway so if she goes under she can go straight to the street.

I have searched through your videos, but I couldn't find one where you physically demonstrate how to install a wood fence on uneven terrain like this. If I missed it, could you please provide a link to that video where you show the proper way to install a wood fence on this type of ground? Instead, I only hear high-level concepts and have seen one video where you drew fence options for a slope. I'm trying to figure it out myself, and it would be helpful to have more detailed instructions. Even when considering stick building, I'm unsure how to use MR Fence Straightway to maintain a 6" top and bottom reveal in 8' rail sections without ending up with unsightly gaps at the bottom. So, what would you suggest doing in this situation? Should the posts be placed closer together, maybe every 4 feet, to better contour to the slope of the ground while maintaining a straight top and 6" reveals? Or should I forget about the straight line and 6” reveals and align the bottom of each picket to follow the ground, allowing the top to follow naturally? Instead of general high-level comments, I would appreciate some specific details on what exactly you would do in this scenario.

You can use panels you just have to rack the fence to the contour of the hill you don't need to build it all by hand... but yea they didn't dig the 3 foot minimum for the posts and usually you put a string line from the 2 end posts so that way your not in and out...

@@JoeEverest I was and then a boundary dispute arose so now I've torn down about about 45 foot of fence (leaving about 30) so I can build it a foot closer -because there was insistence from another household to get it right because I was doing it wrong and they were correct, I wasn't close enough to them. All the post holes are a foot by a foot by about 3 foot deep and I bought a mixer so I experimented with 4000 PSI to soup on purpose. Been fun getting them out of 1' topsoil 2' clay. But when pulling posts I found the holes filling with water so no I need to run about 150' of French drains/perforated coil/whatever. I'm seeing a lot online Google saying with uneven ground you "have" to build a fence this way with the gaps, that there is "no other way unfortunately". I've seen a lot of fences with no gaps on uneven ground at the bottoms and if you even had a simple 3 rail fence it is even all the way across. I am just trying get an idea on the method of setting the posts before installing the fence on that typ of terrain even though I'm sure I could figure I out since I've done all kinds of carpentry and finish work for so long. One also said you just fill the gaps in with dirt/soil after building the fence with the gaps at the bottom. Idk, this doesn't seem right to me and I can see a lot of issues with something like that in the future like washout or animals digging right through on a privacy fence. Maybe run the framing board or nailer really low to the ground and set the posts closer together in the short uneven parts. That's the only thing I could think but when I actually start I can figure it out most of the time and if I can't I will figure it out another way. The rest of that is just very shotty work just like we see and fix all the time. Now today many people do not want to work for others and they can just be their own boss and do this type of work with little to no experience but and also because of necessity with so many loosing their incomes are trying their hand at the trades. It is literally a disaster I've been seeing all over with these jobs on top a lot of people just don't care or take pride in their work. They give the customers crap for the hard earned money they pay them unfortunately and I don't go easy on those guys and I tell the customer all about it. There us a lot of bad info out there also as mentioned before on the internet and YT.

The UK has some great builders, plumbers, electricians and other trades, but they are too few for the demand, and usually booked ahead for months by word of mouth alone. It’s a complete lottery outside of them whether you’ll get a decent one or a completely unqualified conman. Also applies to the big house building corporations who subcontract their tradespeople. Good building regs are only as good as their enforcement by both industry management & government. The UK housing industry’s enforcement are inconsistent at best, or non-existent or backlogged for years at worse.

We had a fence built when we moved in 3 years ago. So many red flags. It is horrible. They used a carpenter pencil for spacing on wet wood. 😭😭😭. The gaps are huge and my husband and I hate it. My husband has spinal stenosis and cannot fix it. He did try to carefully pull off the boards and push them closer together and add in the extra but with his back and was able to fix one panel, but it was pretty difficult. We cannot afford to have it fixed so we are stuck with it. Also, wen he was fixing the panels, there was a space for me to look and see what the neighbor’s side looks like. They must hate us. It looks worse on their side. 😢😢Plus now they have to weed between the fence and the chain link fence that was between the yards. Oh at the gates both had to be fixed by someone else they did such a bad job.

That entire video sounded like a "this is why I love my HOA" video LOL. So glad I don't have one. But this wouldn't fly here either. Actually, it would. The first good gust and that thing would be off to the wild blue yonder trying to keep up with the blue angels or something LOL. I'd use concrete, set to at least 24 inches (not centimeters), and trim the posts. However, those are 2x3s, not 1x3s. They're clearly the same thickness as the 2x4s used

Remember to always get at least different 3 quotes with independently verified recommendations and photo proof of completed jobs, the cheapest guy isn’t always the best option and same applies to the smoothest talker, an honest tradesman will run you through all the best options for the fence that best suits your garden with an explanation of why it is so and the written quote will tell you the lengths of post being used and how deep they will be dug, so you don’t get that “king post” effect where the posts oversail the fence, due to the varying gradient of that particular garden, the best option would have been build on site, possibly more expensive in the short term, but in the long term, would have been cheaper and look far better also the honest tradesman will invite questions during installation, it’s far easier to cope with snags on-site than have to come back at a future date, which is lost revenue and for all concerned. This fence could and should have been avoided by doing due diligence long before the tradesman got to site,. Do it nice, or do it twice folks. 👍

I’m a trim carpenter and cabinet builder by specialty but I’ve done framing, fencing, and concrete. This is the worst fence I have ever seen. You should see the one in my neck of the woods that a “welder” built. If you’re going to try to bid a job and you haven’t done it before, Don’t do it!!! Try it on your house first before you bid a fence job like this! Man that was horrible to watch. Sorry my rant is over. Joe, you know what you’re talking about and keep up the great work man.

I hired a 'Professional' fence company myself a couple years ago that produced, probably worse results. I made the 'Contractor' come back twice, he kept defending his work. The posts were not straight up, level. The workers did not measure from the inset of the posts, to the inset of the next post 96 inches- 8 feet per section----the length of the store bought panels I acquired for $20 on discount. The sections varied as they did not take into account the 4 inch post width, at one point they lost an entire foot after 3 sections, reducing the section down to 84 inches, not 96 inches. So, without my authorization they cut my fence panels, at an angle, to force them against leaning posts that were off level. Then I realized they left the Home Depot tags on the top. Simple math told me not one was inbedded more than 22-24 inches. The Frost line is way deeper here....horror story. Some people have no pride, no shame, no sense to honor the only good name their father gave them.

It's the fault of the guys doing the job of course, but the ultimate responsibility is that of the home owner not doing their due diligence and finding out how it would be cheaper. Also not specifying the height and style of the fencing required. Hedges are nice, as can the manufactured plasticy-wood effect boards in the UK. No idea if they're used in America. I remember we had pallet boards dropped in to the front garden when the hedge had to be removed - absolutely solid and above all cheap. I'd prefer not to live in a HOA area with a height limit of 6 feet, as I can still look over and people higher can still look in to the garden.
