Joe Holland Fishing

2 жыл бұрын

This was the coldest day I have ice fished including wind chill. Had a little scare in the morning when 1/3 showed up and 2 were left back behind.
Ended up having a decent fishing day considering the elements, Extreme cold at -28 f, 30 mph winds, high pressure, and bluebird skies. Real Feel wind chill factor bottomed out at -64 f.
Mark, Cameron and Brandon team up to have a great day on the frigid cold hard water of Chamberlain Lake in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

Your absolutely right about the amount of gear you need to bring when its that cold. Took an ice fishing trip a few years back and it was - 12 below... Well the goofs I went with decided to break into the blackberry brandy and beer. Well then they got good and lit. Decided to play football well they got all sweaty. 2 of them got frostbite on toes... Damn fools I tried to tell them alcohol isn't good when its that cold... Nor is sweat a Friend.....

Amazing series and fully enjoy. I’m in the northern Adirondacks and have been hit with this cold blast as well. Was guiding for northern pike in -29 this past Sunday morning. Joe, the one thing that bothers me a bit is the number of lakers and brookies that are thrown back without attempting to even look for the hook. Contrary to what many believe, the hooks don’t just dissolve in a couple days, it’s often many weeks or longer. Depending on species and where the hook is, we’re talking about far higher mortality rates than we would care to admit. I fully understand releasing a fish with a buried hook - I do it all the time when needed! That being said, I just don’t think it’s right to default to cutting the line without attempting to carefully remove it first. All the best Joe! Stay safe and can’t wait for the next one!
@JoeHollandFishing
@JoeHollandFishing 2 жыл бұрын
For sure, we would love to get our hooks back and pretty much always check. Re tying in negative temps isn't first choice. With brookies they are a little squirrely and if they swallow it we think its best to snip and go. I caught three fish this trip with others hooks in them so that means they are living and still eating after others snipped. We try and take into consideration the amount of time out of water and also the current temp and wind at that point too . First choice is always to get the hook back but if its down the throat and not visible we cut, if it's visible and not ridiculous temps we always go after it. Great point thanks for bringing it up.

We have a very small bag limit of allowable kept fish. Its been proven to cause less mortality especially in harsh outside conditions to cut the line or hook rather than dig around for it and get the fish bleeding. They can either pass them or rust them out and we have caught several fish with hooks already in them so the fish continue to thrive and feed.
