ESPN's Pete Thamel Calls Dan Lanning's Speech About Deion Sanders and Colorado 'Premeditated Petty'
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning has gone viral for his pre-game speech taking a shot at Deion Sanders and Colorado
College football is often fueled by shade being thrown by one party at another, and it is typically subtle for plausible deniability.
However, on Saturday, ESPN aired Oregon head coach Dan Lanning's speech that he gave to his squad before they met with Deion Sanders' No. 19 Buffs and it was quite clear what Lanning was implying. The second-year head coach at Oregon told his team "They’re fighting for Clicks, we’re fighting for wins." A speech that has since made its rounds all over social media, and one that ESPN's Rece Davis and Pete Thamel both believe was planned out by Lanning to make a statement.
On a recent episode of their College GameDay Podcast, Davis joked that, unlike other coaches who will pull back on a pre-game speech that is being recorded, Lanning seized the moment.
"In this case, Dan Lanning said, "Yes put that television camera right there because I think that's my good side and make sure you don't miss this." And then he just said it."
While Davis was finishing his statement, Thamel chimed in saying Lanning was "Premeditated petty." Something he elaborated on as well, which again appeared to be a case of Lanning embracing the platform that was on his program on Saturday.
"I felt like it was a statement game for Oregon in so many ways, it was a statement game for Dan Lanning and his young coaching career in so many ways and I enjoyed every second of the premeditated petty."
A statement indeed, as the No. 10 Ducks who are now ranked as the No. 9 team in the country throttled the Buffs by a score of 42-6. The game was essentially over at halftime, and had Oregon wanted to they could have hung 70 or more points on Colorado.
Sanders wasn't upset with the speech by any means but made it known that teams like Oregon and fans should appreciate the shots they can take now because he firmly believes that this is the worst that this Colorado program will look.
