When Deion Sanders took the head coaching job at Colorado, he brought his luggage - and his baggage. Former Buffs quarterback and Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt joins “Fearless” to discuss the controversy surrounding Coach Prime, Klatt’s alma mater, and the NCAA transfer portal. Do those critical of Deion’s unvarnished approach have a point, or is he just using the system? No other rule change has affected college athletics like name, image, and likeness, but is that a good thing? Jason and Joel debate the cost and unintended consequences of the current NIL package.

You can’t set aside NIL for an elite group of players in an open marketplace. If a player that’s not in the top 300 can leverage their NIL then good for them. If you start making NIL for a specific group of players who gets to decide who these players are, that can open a whole new can of worms by tampering with lists etc.. I get what Joel said about having a half a million at 18. I can’t speak on everyone but when I was 19 my grandad left my brother his home and everything in it expect the safe and everything that was in it went to me. I’m thinking maybe just a few hundred in there. It was 65,000 in that safe. I didn’t just blow through it. My first thought was “ima invest that money. Im now 31 and with that investment I now own 10 duplexes 20 units in all and 5 houses that I rent out. I wish I could mentor some of these guys and tell them. You never know when an injury might happen or anything. When you getting that money invested into something in case you don’t make it to the NFL or the NBA. I watched my parents buss they ass all them years working and I always told myself I wasn’t gonna work that hard. I went to college played ball. I knew I wasn’t gonna make it to the NBA so I used that scholarship to get 2 degrees and learn how to run business the right way. Now all I do is coach high school basketball and train kids for basketball because that’s what I enjoy doing. So I’m doing something I love for maybe 5 hours in a day because I was smart at 19 and invested

I like Coach Prime. He's qualified to coach at a high level. He's old school. He doesn't use profanity but he is still a disciplinarian. But the portal system and the pay I'm not a fan of. I watched the winter and spring practices on their social media . They had some real duds on the line. Most of those guys are gone now. He knows what he needs. Skilled player wise he's ok. I have no idea how many games he will win. As usual it will come down to QB play, studs on the lines, and injuries. I don't like some of his assistants. I won't name names but he has 2 or 3 guys that are drill instructors who just drop F bombs at the players. I like more of a Tom Landry approach to the game. Check out the ticket prices at Colorado. They are through the roof. Guess thats what you have to do to get a guy like Coach Prime and his high profile assistants. Should be fun but they won't get my money.

What is there to defend? I think people absolutely did not pay attention… when Coach Prime was at JSU? He has said publicly that his teams would NOT rely on primarily developing high school players. His concentration was veteran and transfer players. Only 20% of his scholarships would go to true freshman. He clearly understands how the portal works. Mississippi and no budget is a hard sell. Now with Power 5 resources we have seen his aggressive plan of attack. Coaches that cannot out recruit his are upset. Simply because they couldn’t figure out how to use a tool… that was right in front of them? These coaches will cry and the rules will change. Shiloh & Shedeur go to the league, his daughter graduates CU in 3 years and Coach bounces to a bigger, WARM weather program?

Jason Whitlock speaks the tone that the establishment won't speak out loud because its a tone of yester year but its a tone that his viewers are agree with and eat up. How about the student athlete who recieves NIL money and makes sound investments after getting a sound education and learning about financial responsibility, traveling across the country being exposed to different cultures and ideas but this student athlete doesn't make it to the proffesional sport league in his or her sport, does Whitlock realize the opportunity that NIL does for this student athlete. For example said student athlete has a injury in college that derails their proffesional dreams, a injury that is life changing that will be with them for life ,health insurance that was afforded them in college won't be there for them in their 30's but the injury is whether its a back injury or knee injury NIL would hopefully allow them to have a head start into planning to build a portfolio that allows them to live comfortably but Whitlock would say that those monies would be invested to purchase narcotics ,who really thinks like that

What about the coaches that leave after telling a kids moms that they are going to make sure they graduate??? Come on fellas!!!

There are still many logistical issues with making the players employees. When coaches get hired, most contracts go through board of trusteees, will they do that for 85-120 players? Is the jock tax going to be implemented for the players? Is there an ncaa salary cap or is it by conference? Will salaries be public so a player could potentially try to transfer to said school or conference? What happens if said kid gets cut, would that salary be guaranteed? What happens if the teams make the playoff or conf championship games, how does that payout go down? There’s so many questions that need to be answered

Is it bad for college football? Is it good for college football? If you have a 1-11 team? Hell yes! How often are teams gonna go 1-11? Not too often! How many coaches coming in to a 1-11 team will attempt to win it all the year they are hired? How many coaches would have the belief they have the charisma and influence recruit 60 4&5 and 3 stars? Few to none! How many coaches won't see 60 players that are salvageable? Likely no other! This may never happen again. Now that CP the most charismatic personality, the #1 CB in the history of the NFL who was hired to turn the team around and has done a nearly miraculous job in recruiting top highschool, Junior college, and transfer players, who happens to be black that not only no other coach would have the balls to do and be successful, they are so astounded, so hateful, so jealous, they wanna change the rules. They are panicking! Its far too early to say it's bad for football! Let's see what happens over the next few years then you have a measuring gage to make a case. This is something that just happened. Its not a trend. CP overhauled his roster and now people have itchy trigger diggers, I believe they want him out of college football!

It's hilarious that you believe he's loading the roster with so many 4- and 5-star guys. There are only a few dozen 5-stars coming out of high school every year, and when they fail, they don't transfer DOWN to a place like CU unless there are reasons they can't transfer parallel. There's a reason a school that already accepted about 3/4 of transfers had to loosen up it's standards even more to let Deion's kind of player into the school. I don't have time to address the less sexy - but equally ignorant - statements.

@@AJHart-eg1ys If you knew how to actually do some research, you could easily see Colorado has 17+ either former 4 & 5 stars already enrolled or transferred in. Stop talking out ur ass when you don’t know what your talking about. Delusional!

@@AJHart-eg1ys There’s definitely 300 4 & 5 star recruits coming out of high school every year your clueless if you think there’s only a few dozen lol.Go do some research buddy.

@@jadendavis6085 If you tally them all up, you can hit about 300, give or take. Only a few dozen are top-tier 5-star guys. The much number of 4-stars points to how much better the 5-stars are considered to be. The lower tiers are almost always larger as you go, until you run out of guys. And it's worth noting that the number of 5-star guys is NOT strictly based on talent. It's based on trying to predict what the first round NFL Draft will look like in a few years. So there might only be 28 bona fide 5-stars in a given year. There could also be 42. But the number who get that distinction is around 30-36. The thing is, there are almost 250 D1 programs, 130 of which are FBS and about 80 of them FBS. And I think you and I both know that the elite programs are gobbling up almost all of the 5-stars and the better 4-stars. Then it becomes a matter of why any 4-star would be in the portal to begin with. Often it's because they can't or don't want to compete for a job. How valuable is that player? Receivers might want to go to a school with an offense that may showcase them more. Then there are the guys who have basically been kicked out. Of those three groups of players, the last one is the pot of guys most likely to be willing to transfer down so far that they'd be near CU's level. The problem is that with many of THEM, the thing that got them booted from the last school will keep them from getting into other schools. THEN they have to mind their Ps and Qs and not get kicked out of their new school. It's like claiming you have a bunch of pageant winners at your school. A lot of schools can say it. But the phrase "pageant winner" doesn't differentiate between a school filled with SEC cheerleaders and a load of small-town slump-busters from the Great Plains. They've all got sashes. Take care.

@@AJHart-eg1ys Your deflecting. Your first statement about coach prime 4-star & 5 -star guys are wrong. You also said there was only a few dozen 4-5 star recruits every year which is inaccurate again. Why do your kind of people never can face facts? Only lies that’s you make up in your head then believe them none of what you said was off facts, that’s just what you believe.
