Joel Quenneville speaks publicly about the Chicago Blackhawks Scandal for the first time

It’s been over 2 years since Joel Quenneville has coached in the NHL, and he’s telling his story for the first time ever right here on the Cam & Strick podcast. Q stepped down as head coach amid a sexual assault scandal with former Chicago player Kyle Beach and a video coach, and as always Andy asks all the questions we need to know. Agreed. Corporate weasel. His conduct and coordination with the family to work with the federal investigation and in a manner to make this situation invisible, despicable. The letter of recommendation had to be approved at the highest level. No calls to the police to investigate. McDonough should never work in corporate America again. Q was not fully honest and transparent . He failed to elaborate and it appeared he was following an invisible script provided by Mr. Bettman's office on topics he could talk about. He wants to get back in the league above all else. The Wirtz family skates. John McDonough skates. Bettman is a lot like McDonough!

I believe in 2nd chances, and think JQ is obviously a great coach, but there's some holes in this story when you hear former team mates and staff that have come forward, and the denial of ever knowing what took place doesn't add up for me, it is obviously a very hard thing for the Organization to deal with , but the consequences of not dealing with it, ended up with the abuse of teenager, so I think alot has yet to play out before he is reinstated

JQ alluded to something that is critical in this that no one seems to really address or recognize. The Blackhawks despite their on-ice success were dysfunctional in a lot of ways. There was a lot of palace intrigue, particularly with John McDonough & I think Stan Bowman. Remember JQ was hired by Dale Tallon and he had been fired probably unfairly - by some suspected underhanded tactics. So these leaders of their various different departments of the Blackhawks did not really trust each other and so there did not seem to be any genuine cooperation amongst them. I think that is at the root of how this was mishandled - and what JQ was referring to when he said he could have done things better, differently.

He didn't deny knowing about the situation. He denied having the full details. That teenager was an adult and a massive adult at that. I think Kyle Beach has left out a lot of his proclivities. An inappropriate and unacceptable relationship between co workers but no 5'4" video coordinator made him do anything.

I want to give coach Q a chance, but I don't know if that was convincing enough. Bottom line is the video coach was sexually assaulting one of his players. There wasn't enough hellfire. I don't think he said a single bad thing about the video coach or a single good thing about Kyle Beach. It was more poor me. I want to like coach Q, especially with the Jimmy Roberts callbacks, but I'm not convinced.

John McDonough had all the power and didn’t do anything about it. And the biggest victim in all of this is the kid in Michigan who wouldn’t have been a victim had McDonougha do something about it. Not fair what they’re doing to Coach Q. An indefinite suspension that Coach Q has had has sent a message and has gone beyond the structured 1 year suspension Coach Q should have gotten. Stan Bowman was garbage and over rated too. Bowman was a yes man to Rocky Wirtz and McDonough. I believe after seeing Rocky Wirtz reaction to the Kyle Beach situation it would have been more appropriate for the Wirtz family to lose the franchise than to have this ban on Coach Q. But nothing happened to the Wirtz family. Sickening. Coach Q is the fall guy. These snakes pinned it ALL on him. Go watch video of Rocky Wirtz raging at the media for asking questions about Kyle Beach situation. Shows that Wirtz’s didn’t care. They care about 1 thing. Money.

im sorry, the longer i watch the interview the more i realize he really only cares about getting back. when he said he never asked kyle what his thoughts would be about him coming back, it really is telling. he IS in part responsible, not the primary, but he bares some responsibility, as a leader, and asking more questions isnt the end of his responsibility.

Former ref Kerry Fraser had this to say about Q in a Players tribune article. Kerry, he was talking about my drug problems,” Theo said. “He can’t talk to me like that. I’m really trying to clean up my life, Kerry. Honestly.” He told me he hadn’t had a drink in X days, hadn’t done drugs in X days. I could tell that he was sincerely wounded. In that moment, I didn’t see the guy who threw his helmet at me and called me every name in the book over the years. I just saw a human being who was in a lot of pain, and I wanted to take his pain away. But what was I supposed to do? I didn’t actually hear what was said. Do I kick Nash out for something I didn’t witness? How am I supposed to explain that in my game report? It was a gray area. So as everyone was skating off the ice, I asked Theo, “What about an apology?” Theo said, “An apology?” “Yeah, an apology. If I get Tyson back here to apologize, promise me you won’t break a stick over his head.” “O.K., deal.” “Alright, come back and meet me at this spot before the next period.” I went right to the visiting team’s coaches room to talk to Joel Quenneville, who was coaching the Blues at the time. I told him we had a little problem. I told him what was said. And I’ll never forget Joel’s face. He’s such a solid guy. He said, “Do you want me to have Tyson take his gear off?” I said, “No, I want him to apologize.” Joel said, “Great idea,” and he went right into the locker room to talk to Tyson.

1:46:26 Easiest softball question of all time and he fails miserably. The answer is one word: Absolutely. If you report a sexual predator to the authorities he does jail time, is a registered sex offender, and never gets a job anywhere near a school. How is this is a difficult question in any way?

Wrong. A report to the police does not automatically make someone a registered SO. He has to be charged. There has to be an investigation and a trial where he is found guilty. None of those things are guarantees.

Great interview and thanks for posting. Love Joel ! In the summer of 2010, after Chicago won their first Stanley Cup in 49 years, the Hawks had their inaugural fan convention in Chicago. I attended as did Kyle Beach. In a fan question forum, Beach was asked a few questions, but his demeanor was sullen, which I thought was weird given the celebratory nature of the weekend. In retrospect, it all made sense, since he was likely still processing his horrible experience, which transpired only a few weeks earlier.

In 2004, the Blackhawks were voted the worst franchise in all of sports by ESPN. They weren’t televising home games, the team was awful, building empty, and owner Bill Wirtz in his old age was essentially running the team and hockey in Chicago into the ground. Nobody even on Chicago sports stations talked about the Hawks and their storied history seemed to be on the brink of being forgotten. The seeds of a turnaround were planted when Bill Wirtz passed, his son Rocky took over and Dale Tallon took over as GM. Not long after, John McDonough came into the organization and Tallon was fired and Stan Bowman brought in as GM. Known for his expertise in marketing and business operations McDonough’s task was to come in and turn around the lack of buzz and get the Chicago public excited about hockey again. From what I can tell he and his group ruled with an iron fist leaving the hockey guys to do their thing with hockey decisions BUT Public relations and image was of upmost concern almost at a weird level where I think Mcdonough and his group under no circumstances wanted anything to tarnish the turnaround of the franchise. I think McDonough and Blackhawks upper management are most to blame for how the Kyle Beach situation played out because they were scared to tarnish what was becoming the greatest turnaround organization in the NHL and basically all of sports. Only Coach Q knows what he did/didn’t know after that meeting. You can take his word or not, but I think the basic message from McDonough and management at that time were “you and the team worry about hockey, we got this” and then it was an afterthought to Q. Not saying that’s right or excuses him from responsibility, but I honestly think it’s plausible that he didn’t know much as far as specifics here and the message from McDonough and company made him content to stay in his lane and continue chasing the franchises first Cup since 1961. I’m for second chances. I think Q is a good guy who made a terrible mistake in decision making. I think he should understand though if the league doesn’t want him back given the seriousness of how lives were affected. But I’d like to see him back in the NHL a better man who knows how to handle a situation like that now given a second chance

I am from Windsor, knew Joel pretty well a long time ago. I can tell you sincerely he has always been a great guy . I have a lot of problems with that Blackhawks situation. I think the whole thing has a lot of bad to it. I think Joel has taken a lot of criticism that is unwarranted - and has been mischaracterized . Thanks for giving JQ the opportunity to tell his side - it was obviously uncomfortable he has always been a easy going fun guy. I sure hope he gets a chance to coach again and try to restore his reputation . I certainly believe he deserves it.

Thank you guys for having Q on. I'm of the group of people who want McDonough to be fully blamed for it not being handled properly. He said he would handle it and he did it so improperly that since no one knew what actually fully happened, that all the subsequent bad things to others occurred. It was interesting to hear from Joel how down-played the allegations were in that meeting, that it was Aldridge hanging out at bars with the guys and texting too much. Which is wild in comparison to the actual allegations. I truly feel like Q is a guy who can be trusted to do right things going forward if given the full picture. I'm glad he's been taking the time to learn a lot too. I've been a Blackhawks fan for years now, I've had iffy vibes from some shady guys they've had on staff, but never have I had a bad inkling about Q. He's always been passionate for the right reasons, fought for the players on ice, and I think only he was more heartbroken than I was the day that Panarin and Hjalmarsson were traded. I truly hope he's able to do more of these interviews and get a chance to show how he's grown and how he would run a locker room now. I feel like he'd ask more questions and have more of an eye out to make sure nothing is happening on his watch. Good luck Q!!!

Good interview.... now, I'm 100٪ comfortable with Coach Quennville returning to the NHL to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs..... I'm lying, I was already comfortable with that Idea. To be honest, I read the article and I'm of the opinion Kyle Beech put himself in a pretty shitty position... he had a choice, he was a man and an Athlete and could have easily said no, not participated regularly in the extra curriculum (3somes with a woman as well) and reported it. Allowing yourself to be assaulted to further your career is a tragedy, but you aren't a victim , you made a bad choice. Coach Q obviously got scape- goated. He knows it and is playing along to get back in their good faces, which is why he is being used to talk to coaches. The problem with that is he has a ring in his nose and will always be led around for any of their future dictates. This story will always follow him and he will always be walking on egg shells. How will players ever obey him? Coach Q needs to stop groveling and give some push back. Being a mealy mouth like this makes him look like he's not be truthful. Saying "I own it" is not a Get out of Jail Free card.

Andy- that is an amazing interview. Kudos for you and those gigantic balls you have for asking them face to face with Q. I am pretty sure this interview just did in Q's career as a coach. While I know he has to be careful about what he says for legal reasons, it just is in no way convincing that he was not way more aware of the allegations of the "video coach."(Aldrich) Some child is dealing with being molested AFTER this whole Blackhawks situation and that could have been avoided if all the proper people from the Blackhawks organization would have made sure their former employee was investigated properly by the police. Sorry Q, you were a part of that organization, so while you shouldn't be the only one sanctioned, you certainly should be all the same. This says it all....Aldrich resigned but received a severance and a playoff bonus and continued to be paid a salary for several months. He was allowed to bring the Stanley Cup for a day in his hometown, his name was engraved on the trophy, he received a championship ring, and he attended a Stanley Cup banner-raising ceremony. He went on to work with USA Hockey, the University of Notre Dame, Miami University in Ohio, and Houghton High School in Houghton, Mich. While in Houghton, Aldrich was arrested and pleaded guilty in 2013 to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor.

Great interview guys. Obviously what happened to Kyle Beach isn't really easy to forgive but at the same time we have to give credit to Quenneville for at least trying to make amends. No one else has been as willing to discuss this as much as he has so we have to give him credit for this. I know the hawks won 3 cups total in the 2010s so I only see 2010 as the one marked since that was the only one this happened to. And we all know too that while this doesn't absolve him or anyone else from wrongdoing, it is clearly known that the ultimate decision maker was John McDonough which I don't think gets mentioned enough. In the report from what I saw said that McDonough said he was going to take carer of it himself and told everyone else including Quenneville to keep their focus on the upcoming finals the following week only to go back on his word and ofc not do anything at all. We all know how selfish, arrogant, manipulative and unbearable McDonough was so it isn't surprising in the slightest that he would offer to take care of something but then go back on his word behind the backs of everyone else in the meeting and how other people were prolly afraid they would get punished or fired by him if they disobeyed him and took matters into their own hands. McDonough should honestly be in prison for not only betraying beach but also everyone in this meeting to a degree. Going back to Quenneville too, while it is far too late to undo what happened, I want to give him credit for trying to rehabilitate and speak ab the processes in doing so. Plus, he has had a well known reputation at single handedly reviving struggling franchises which not many people in this day in age can do and before this whole beach issue Quenneville was never the subject of any major controversy so because of those things it deep down doesn't surprise me much that teams have tried to reach out for his services but we'll see what happens though.

Great interview. It is astonishing that none of the high-level Blackhawks executives never thought to report these allegations to the police. That being said, I feel like Coach Q has been made the fall guy because he was so well known and accomplished. He definitely made a terrible mistake, which he has admitted to, and worked to educate himself, reached out to sexual abuse survivors, and done everything the league suggested he do. He definitely deserves another chance to coach.

Quenneville was a scapegoat. It's easy to point the finger and fire the coach. Quenneville took the punishment and sought help and advice on how to handle a situation like this in the future. He owns the regret for not acting when he should have, but all of the moral pristine people in this world will never forgive him. It's time to bring him back. He's a HoF coach and deserves to continue his career and be better now with the knowledge to prevent these horrific incidents happening in the future.

In a way he was the same with Stan Bowman. The decision rested with John McDonough the team President who was fired and we still don’t know why to this day. In the end both should have spoken up more or at least tried to find out more. I don’t necessarily buy that Q has no knowledge of a sexual assault til 2021 that’s hard to believe. I don’t believe he will coach again no team wants that rap if they announce his hiring.

Should've been investigated by McDonugh more over the summer of 2010; let it go when it was a "he said, he said" case, and that gets all the more stickier involving someone who is a closeted LGBT and someone who MIGHT be LGBT. Did he think Beach went to Brad's apartment thinking it would get him playing time on the Hawks and it was lovers quarrel that ended badly? The problem in all of this is what Brad did after he left the Hawks, but to assume he would do it again is homophobic; e.g. "he's gay, thats what they do" etc. No one knew anything at the time. I'm not sure what could've been found out more IF investigated, other than more accusations flying back and forth between Brad and Kyle.
