Generally everywhere in America houses are wood-framed because wood is so plentiful and much cheaper, but thousands of years of settlement and expansion in England has made it more rare and expensive. The saddest thing I ever heard was a British family that came to the US for a holiday, rented a car and directly pulled out in front of a Semi. I think it happened in Orlando.

It's so easy to do. Especially when you pull out on to a road and there are no other cars as a reminder- until you meet one head on.

I've driven all over Europe (Barcelona was a total nightmare) but not the UK. I have anxiety just thinking about fighting instinct to be on the other side of the road. I don't think I will ever do it, but I would love a roadtrip through the UK.

When I drive in the UK, I always go with stick (usually don't have a choice anyway). It's surprising how quickly you do get used to it, so I've learned over the years to have a healthy respect for it not being your normal everyday way of driving. When making changes, always be 100% present. Ever since I started doing that, no issues.

Building- Most new houses in Florida are built with Block. Some are Wood framed but not as common as it used to be. Brick building is rather rare in the U.S. today. Brick is expensive, slow and not as rugged as Block.

Philadelphia was Britians most important city during the colonial era. William Penn who founded Philadelphia was part British. The liberty bell was made at Whitechaple foundry in London England. A lot of the historical areas in Philadelphia are connected to England. Philadelphia and Pennsylvania was giving to William Penn an English Quaker in the 1600s by King Charles and the crown of England to pay off debt to his father who was an admiral in the British navy.

I was stationed in the UK 92-94. I bought a Vauxhaul Cavalier that had manual transmission. After a few weeks it was second nature. Then back home I had to “relearn” a left hand drive.

Here in the states, you can make different turns on red depending on the type of road and where the turn is. Unless posted on the stoplight poles with "no turn on red" you can almost always make a right turn on red. Now I am not sure about the rest of the US but here in Maryland and the surrounding states, you can make a left hand turn on red so long as it is a one way going in the direction of the left hand turn and the stoplight doesn't say "no turn on red". You will actually have many drivers get angry if you are in a right hand lane turning right and you sit at the red light when you could have made your turn already.

Oh Lord. My first time driving in the UK was after 23 hours or something of travel, planes trains and buses, and by myself, AND I'm over 50, and yes a standard :) I did however prove I haven't lost my marbles! The worst thing, coming from Canada, was the ongodly high speed limits- going north on the A9, with the road getting narrower and fully loaded log trucks heading south in the twilight. Ugh. Was a 3 hour drive and I was determined to get there before dark :)
@k_47772 жыл бұрын
I live on the A9 north of Inverness and can confirm that it is the worst road I've driven on. Well done for surviving 🤣

Fun fact. Florida is a state with solid traffic lights and arrow traffic lights 🚦. What’s the difference? It’s legal to turn right on a solid red light and it’s technically not legal to turn right on a red arrow… that’s the only difference but to be honest no one follows or enforces it. Laws are more of a guideline here in FL and we like it that way.

White cars generally stay a little cooler in sunny climates, because the white reflects a lot of the sunlight whereas darker colors absorb sunlight.

I find driving in Florida is more relaxing that UK. Unlike the Brits who make a big deal about it, they never complain about lane hoggers. They just pass them on the right.

Love it! Welcome to Florida!!! I can imagine the fear factor ... especially driving in the opposite seat you are used to. Y'all handled everything so well! Just an FYI: The 10 & 2 hands on steering wheel positioning is no longer the norm....due to AIRBAGS! If your arms are in that position in an accident and the airbags are deployed, your arms (bones) are more than likely going to be smacked into your face (another bone). Ouch! The new position is 9 & 3. You're welcome. ❤

NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) no longer recommends 10 and 2. For modern cars they recommend 9 and 3 because of airbags. It's a lot safer.

I've never driven in the UK, but I have driven a right hand drive car. While studying in Europe, I had a British friend who liked to drink and frequently passed me his keys. Further complicating matters, it was a manual transmission, which I had never driven on a public road. A few years later, I bought a left hand drive car with a manual. Because the shift pattern is the same, but the driver's seat is opposite, the first few times I started to drive, I had to remind myself not to start off in 5th gear.

Its very similar to the US worldwide with the exception of the Commonwealth countries as well as switching to the metric system. But because most cars display speeds in both systems, the latter won't take long to get used to. I hear the Bahamas is the trickiest because they drive on the left like in the UK, but they use North American style cars with the driver seat still on the left side

You'd be quite comfortable in Canada, it's very much like the U.S.
@Jack_Stafford2 жыл бұрын
It was very nice driving in Canada, it's not hard to convert the kilometers per hour once you know 100 kilometers per hour equals about 60 miles an hour. And the drivers are generally very kind and will allow you to merge especially when they see an American Plate and see you're a visitor they will understand a little confusion :-) and they drive on the same side of the road as America so it really is just reading the signs and realizing everything is going to be in both English and French so sometimes it takes a second to register, to skip the French and go to the English paragraph because they alternate which one is on the top and which one is on the bottom. The only problem I ran into was in Toronto is I was not paying attention and I stopped at a stoplight, and their trolley shares the same roads as the cars and I was right on the trolley tracks at a stoplight and it had to honk at me get out of its way LOL But the highways and road were very smooth, excellently maintained and of course everything is clean and well-marked. We drove all over Ontario, my dad drove through Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta and we had absolutely no problems. I have heard it is different in Quebec because they don't always include English on the signs and the people generally are not as patient or understanding to English speakers.

Wrong, the Bahamas is a US territory and the drive on the right side of the road, I went on cruise to the Bahamas in 2010.
@becketpanfil82262 жыл бұрын
@@marydavis5234 the Bahamas is not a US territory... its a sovereign nation-state for almost 50 years, part of the British Commonwealth and a former British territory. They drive on the left side. Perhaps you're thinking of the US Virgin Islands? The only Gulf/Caribbean US territories are the virgin islands and Puerto Rico, plus some disputed small islands/shoals near Jamaica, which the US disputes sovereignty over with Colombia. I did also go on a cruise there, nice place to visit! 🇧🇸
