There is a Russian film shot in the USSR in 1973 called "The Headless Horseman". The film is based on the adventure novel by Thomas Mayne Reid. This is an interesting example of a "Soviet western", where you can also see how American history was perceived in the Soviet Union, and the film has a vivid image of the headless horseman himself with a memorable musical theme. The full movie is available on KZbin.

Watched the Hallmark version based on this recommendation, and it’s surprisingly good! Probably the closest we have to adapting the original short story. One detail I loved is that the writer in the tavern is credited as Knickerbocker (I think they say his name once), who’s Irving’s fictional New York historian from his first novel. It’s a nice callback to the introduction of the book: “Found among the papers of the late Diedrich Knickerbocker.”

@Joelikesmoviesnstuff2 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. Can you explain your reasons why?
@sirorliktheironclad2 жыл бұрын
@@Joelikesmoviesnstuff Because the Disney film is a classic, I feel it captures the tone of book very well where it starts off sweet, colorful, and lighthearted but up to the end it gets scary, dark, and action packed. I like the film’s take on Ichabod being a silly lanky schoolmaster that wants to marry Katrina for her wealth but is still an entertaining funny character that’s not evil nor good. I like how the film captures the characters not being good nor bad. Ichabod is a gold digger, Katrina is spoiled rich girl, and Brom is a bully. Yet non of the characters are good or evil they are in the middle. The Headless Horseman is the only character that’s truly evil and the cute fat girl that likes Ichabod and Brom is the only truly good character. I love the music especially the Ichabod Crane song and the Headless Horseman song. The animation and colors are beautiful, fluent, and expressive especially the first half and the last half which is gothic and scary. Of course the Headless Horseman is terrifying and epic with his iconic evil laugh, flaming Jack-o-Lantern, sword, red eyed black horse, and amazing design and animation. Personally I think the Headless Horseman is real, not a prank done by Brom. Lastly, the Headless Horseman chase scene is epic, funny, and scary with the music and fast paced action plus the ending is left ambiguous if Ichabod escaped or got killed. I love how it stays true to the original story while at the same time being funny and scary which I love in a good movie to watch every Halloween night. Just my opinion.

Don't forget the story of the Headless Horseman of Texas El Muerto. There was a real headless trooper from the battle of White Plains and he is buried in the Dutch Church graveyard in an unmarked grave. He is buried there because when British forces came through Sleepy Hollow they were burning people's homes. A Hessian trooper found a baby in a home that was due to be burnt and saved the baby, then reunited the infant with its mother. An entertaining movie. Just had a completely different story of a different Ichabod Crane and Headless Horseman.
@AvengerII3 жыл бұрын
The 1999 feature film by Tim Burton is an homage to the Hammer Horror films. There are several actors (Christopher Lee , Michael Gough, and at least one other gentleman whose name escapes me) who were in Hammer Studios films that were cast in roles in that film on purpose. You have to watch the 1950s and 1960s Hammer Studios films to understand what Burton was doing. At the time the 1999 film was released, I didn't care for it. I felt it was heavy-handed and not very scary to be honest. My attitude has softened after I re-watched the Hammer Studios films but I honestly think those early Hammer films (Horror of Dracula, The Curse of Frankenstein) are classier than what Burton produced. Burton did his best but he's honestly better at his own original stories than doing riffs on other people's work IMHO. Burton threw out the classic storyline by Washington Irving and did his own thing. If you're looking for an accurate retelling of the classic story, that film is not it. Even the Disney animated featurette is more faithful. As far as animation goes, nobody's beaten Disney. The best people Disney ever employed in animation worked on that film. It's still one of the better Sleepy Hollow adaptations, too. It's the best version of Sleepy Hollow I've seen and also some of the best performances by Bing Crosby that I've ever listened to. I've noticed the iconic animated adaptations of classic stories have always employed screen legends as narrators or characters in those films. They managed this with both Sleepy Hollow (Disney) and the original TV special "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" which starred Boris Karloff as both the narrator and the Grinch. That aired only a few years before he died but after "Frankenstein" it's perhaps the most iconic film he ever appeared in. It's funny that the TV versions of Sleepy Hollow (1980 version, Hallmark) are often more accurate than the direct-to-video films. The slasher versions of the story (mostly direct to video) are terrible, IMHO. This is a ghost story as opposed to a modern horror film; those are two different things. My feelings about cinematic adaptations of Sleepy Hollow are that they should be A) as faithful as possible to the storyline by Irving; B) they SHOULD be scary when Ichabod enters the Hollow and encounters the Horseman; C) it should be VERY ambiguous as to whether or not the Horseman is a ghost or disguised prankster -- Disney heavily implied a ghost, other adaptations were more subtle or showed a prankster; and D) recreate or use as much of the scenery from the real Sleepy Hollow and Hudson Valley. This is NOT a film that should be shot completely in a studio or Nebraska or Quebec unless you find an area that looks a lot like the Hudson Valley...

I accidentally stumbled on the Hallmark version a couple of weeks ago, and I remember thinking that it was most authentic to the original tale. I was also very impressed with their Ichabod Crane and his wonderful interpretation of the role. Katrina too was well done. It instantly became my favorite live-action version of the Sleepy Hollow story. However, I don"t really care to compare live action to animation that tell the same tale; different media do different things, produce different effects, and it's an apples'and-oranges kind of comparison. So, while the Hallmark film is my favorite live-action version, I have to say my favorite animated version is the classic Disney cartoon from 1949, that I grew up on and watched every Halloween since my earliest memory. It has brilliant animation, with a wonderfully caricatured Ichabod Crane who could not possibly physically exist in eality, but won all the ladies with a singing voice that sounded suspiciously like Bing Crosby.. Crosby, of course, also did the narration, and the film is hysterically funny at Ichabod's (and Brom's) expense. But it is genuinely absolutely TERRIFYING. when, after a slow and scary ride through the Hollow, the Horseman finally appears to Ichabod-'--'and the viewer----in all his headless, sword-swiping glory! I get chills even thinking about it!

@Joelikesmoviesnstuff2 жыл бұрын
hi Patricia. Great observation! Someone also asked a similar question (about the deceased pregnant woman), so I will copy & paste the closest I could give to an answer: Good question about the dead woman with her baby. In that movie, I believe she's referred to as "Wither Jacobs." I'm not entirely sure of the story behind her... However, it is worth noting: the Tim Burton movie Sleepy Hollow (starring Johnny Depp, and also released in 1999) has a story about a widow named "Emily Winship" who gets decapitated by the Headless Horseman, and then the Horseman slashes her stomach. Later, when Ichabod examines her corpse, he learns that she was pregnant while killed (which would suggest the Horseman was trying to kill the baby in the womb when he slashed her stomach)... I doubt these two stories had similarities by coincidence. I would think they were both loosely based on some real story from Sleepy Hollow's history (even if I have zero memory of it being mentioned in the actual book by Washington Irving)... I can also tell you: Before Tim Burton made his Sleepy Hollow movie, he did go to the real town of Sleepy Hollow, New York, and talk to lots of different locals - asking for other spooky stories of Sleepy Hollow. Many of the other stories we saw in the movie were loosely based on real stories of the town. I once spoke to a woman who worked in a card store in Sleepy Hollow, and she told me that Tim Burton had stopped in her store a few years before making his movie, and actually asked her directly for local spooky stories.

Now I'm trying to think what else I can tell you... The woman in the card store told me that there really was a huge, creepy-looking tree in the woods of Sleepy Hollow, which many locals once truly believed to be haunted. So when you saw that haunted tree in the Tim Burton movie, it was loosely based on this tree... Also, there was once a witch named "Hulda the Witch" who lived in the woods outside Sleepy Hollow. She would - if I remember correctly - make medicine for sick children in Sleepy Hollow. When she died, she was buried outside the Old Dutch Church, but no tombstone was given to her. So of course, if you remember in the Tim Burton movie there was a witch who lived in the woods outside Sleepy Hollow. That character was very loosely inspired by Hulda... I read about Hulda in a little book called "Tales of the Old Dutch Burying Ground - A Walking Tour." You can briefly see the cover of that book around 10:56 of this video. And I bought that book in the card store which I keep mentioning... The woman in this card store told me that around 1997 or 1998, a man just walked in her store and said something like "Hi. I'm making a movie about Sleepy Hollow. Can you tell me any local spooky stories you know?" Then about a year later, when the Tim Burton movie was released in theaters, there was a mini-documentary about it on TV which she watched. And as soon as they showed Tim Burton, she screamed out "That's the guy who was in my store!"

In the 1999 Hallmark TV movie I'd say that it's not Washington Irving as the travelling writer, but rather Diedrich Knickerbocker, the fictional character that Irving created as a pen name. These scenes are adapted frim the original story in that the ending reveals that an old local storyteller is relaying the story to our writer character who is collecting them into the book in which they were published; The Sketchbook of Geoffery Crayon Gent. Anyway, that's by far not the best film (that would be Burton's) nor the most faithful adaptation (that would be Disney's), but it's a film I return to every year arouns this time, just as I visit Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow around this time of year each year.
@Joelikesmoviesnstuff2 ай бұрын
You may be correct that it's not Irving, but the movie does not fully clarify. I disagree with you that Burton's version is the best, but that's a matter of opinion. You said on another post that you feel Disney's version is the most accurate, and I look forward to reading your reasons why. @masterofallgoons2 ай бұрын
@@Joelikesmoviesnstuff - You're right that it's not specified, but I just feel like in the context of the story it would make sense that it's kind of adapting that directly.. but then again, Geoffrey Crayon and Diedrich Knickerbocker were just essentially pen names for Irving anyway, so maybe there isn't much either way. I love the Burton film, but yes, it's not a faithful adaptation at all. It just sorta takes the iconography and applies it to a modern take on an old fashioned horror movie, like a Universal monster movie, Hammer Horror movie, and Mario Bava film rolled into one and American Americanized by way of Tim Burton. And it's beautiful. It's one of the best looking, most richly photographed horror films ever made. It is indeed 'Sleepy Hollow' in name only though.

Love the hallmark version. Begley Jr.'s Craine is the worst.

I enjoyed watching this video very much. I agree, the Canadian film was best.

Awesome! After reading all the comments on this video, I feel like I didn't realize how many people have already seen the 1999 Hallmark version.
