That way of thinking would certainly be a reason Pete’s character can’t talk to his wife, Goodie Charity, about the sexual aspect of their relationship.

But the next day the townspeople only find a smashed pumpkin, and it's inferred that his town rival Brom Bones faked the whole thing. So, it's both and neither, sorta.

I absolutely love the movie, but it has very little to do with the story. Ichabod and the other characters are quite different than the original story describes, and the plot has nothing to do with the source story. It's worth reading, and it's not long. I'm sure you can find it online for free since it's in the public domain. Also, the Disney animated short from the 50s is probably the most faithful and accurate adaptation just as far as maintaining the basic story goes. It's also a great work of animation and Burton drew some inspiration from that aesthetic for the movie.
