What kind of unit? Most likely possibilities: Base Comm, combat comm & mobile air control, and E&I. Base comm is boooooring. Too many nitpickers about things like haircuts, hats etc. E&I is Engineering & Installation. They travel around the world and install communication equipment. You go TDY a lot. You almost always instal at a base facility, and stay in base billeting or hotels. Mobile comm & air control radar units deploy anywhere. Combat comm could be providing comm to a bare base or work on remote sites. Air Control is almost always deployed at geographically separated locations. We deployed to lots of mountain tops and other austere locations like the Colombian Amazon hundreds of miles from anything bigger than a village. Our best deployments were to the Bahamas. Good luck

Thanks Kyle and TSgt Acosta. Information great for those youngsters interested in joining any service, whether active or inactive. As a long time veteran who served in active AF then ANG. My situation is different as I was raised asa child of both Active and Inactive. 1972-1997, MSgt to Captain. First AFSC was 904xx, Medical Laboratory Specialist, then graduated with my BSN RN and was commissioned. Nice part my dad said wore me in both times. He joined AF/ANG after AF was formed in Sept 1948. He was what they called Civil Service, wore uniform daily, 40 years bothenlisted E1 to E9. Then commissioned in 1961, retired as O6. Civil service has become AGR status. Good luck to those who join the 1 percenters, as a female I did not find it difficult, but my being a AF child may have altered my experiences.

Does Air National Gaurd have opportunities to travel abroad? I've been between Air National Gaurd and active duty USAF. I like that the Air Gaurd allows you to live in whatever state you want, better for balancing life with families (I'm 26, married, and have a kid), get to be more picky with job choosing, and still get a lot of good benefits. My bachelors degree is in International Studies though and I've learned Russian so I would love to have the option to travel abroad.

Our eldest guy in AF basic training was 31. Each basic flight may have 10 Air Nat'l Guardsman & 10 Air Force Reservists...training is identical & so is technical school. But then you return home & back to you home station base & you civ job has rules to follow to allow you to serve you Air Guard duties. Sometimes instead of deploying to Middle East desert, you may be activated temporarily by your Governor for support of Flooding/Hurricane/Civil Unrest, etc & you'll get your state ribbon for that service. You "might" get temp chances to go on temp active orders for yor ANG job & it could be on another base & may be voluntary. I got to fulfill a mission required inside The Pentagon when I was 20. A Lt. Col. gave me a tour of the bldg & invited me to return to DC the next summer semester I had off. Great flexibility!

Is it possible to go full time in the Air National Guard?
@timesupgr.84713 жыл бұрын
Yes. There are two ways. I was an Air Technician. Air techs are federal civil service employees who are also members of the unit they work for. We wore our uniforms every day and were represented by a union. The other possibility is AGR (Active Guard Reserve). AGRs get the same benefits as active duty. They get AD pay, retirement and leave. Both are good. In many places AGRs take more money home, but technicians have more flexibility and employee rights. It’s also easier to transfer jobs as an Air Tech.I was in the CTANG and transferred to OHANG. Active duty have an attitude about ANG. They ignorantly assume they know more than guardsmen. Whenever I deployed with active I knew way more about my equipment than they did. I’ll put the skills of an Air Tech against active duty any day. Best job in the Air Force
@LauderdaleJoeM3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I also did both active Guard statuses in Illinois in the '90s. I was a temp active guardsman (AGR) twice, and I was appointed a temp dual Fed civil svs Air Reserve Technician (ART) under Dept of the Air Force. All in same uniform and $ varies a bit. The ANG has so much choice, opportunity, & benefits!

Depends on what state you live in, take the national guard for an example, you will be stationed in a certain part of your state for the drills, and certain mos train in other areas, so take what you will from that.
@LauderdaleJoeM3 жыл бұрын
Ideally it's easiest for a member to stay at the base the enlisted at, but moves are possible if you're liked & approved for perhaps cross-training into a diff AFSC. They'd want to know the reason you want to leave 1 base & be assigned to another. Within same state is easier that out of state. But Guard unit may not want to loose you in the position you committed to. If it logically benefits the ANG & the receiving unit gets a quality airman & a slot available, then it is possible, it depends on the reason. Its far more possible among ANG units (vs Active USAF where its next to impossible).

Bad Recruiter. Dudes full of crap! AIR NATIONAL GUARD is awesome though. Find your area and discover your area to work in. Just like any job, only thing extra is there's a descent retirement at the end if you focus on that and on the civilian working side, it gets you away from your civilian employer, a change of pace if you will. It opens many doors of opportunities for you. You get to go places that you've never been and it's not all crappy places. I've been to Italy several times, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, Crete, Tblisi, Georgia, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Germany, and many places in the US.
