You can write a character who doesn't fit in well with others or feels alienated from their community without saying "They're not like other boys/girls."

I do want to give credit to Catherine Hardwicke though, just based on a (sort of) personal experience. My high school had a weirdly good film program, and a few years ago, a student who was really into film got diagnosed with cancer. I’m not sure if it was through the Make A Wish program or something else, but he actually was given the opportunity to work with some big names (a few seriously accomplished actors, really) to have a professional production of a short film he wrote. Hardwicke ended up being the director, and I remember being like “oh, that lady directed Twilight? Huh, cool.” I was never into Twilight and just didn’t know anything about her before that. There was a big premiere for the student’s movie at our school, and I think it meant a lot to everyone that Hardwicke and the other professionals involved made this kid’s dream happen. He did pass away later on (I want to say it was some time after the premiere, but that might just be the most comforting sequence of events to me), but I’d like to think that getting to be on set and all of that was an amazing experience for him that helped him through that time. Because of that, I’ll always appreciate Catherine Hardwicke on a sentimental, personal level

I think that piqued my interest in her-I always assumed that whoever the twilight director was would just be some talentless hack, but it was interesting to find out that she had a background with desaturated, gritty indie movies that were pretty well-received, and it just didn’t work in Twilight. Trying to pretty clearly replicate that with red riding hood had even more disastrous, honestly silly results, and I think you captured that here super well

That's great that was able to happen for him. Hardwicke has always seemed genuine to me. I think her style is different and being a woman in the boy's club makes it more difficult to maintain control over her projects.

As a fan fiction writer this is upsetting to learn about. I mean this only works online, I've done this myself, fans are fickle so withholding the ending and reading the comments of the previous chapters and story beats makes it so you can get a feel on if the readers will think this ending is right, not rushed and not a total let down. but when you have the physical book in your hand you can't withhold the ending. That's like handing someone a slice of cheese and telling them to enjoy their grilled cheese sandwich.

I "accidentally" bought this book!! I got it at a dollar tree before going on a trip (thought it would be a good a plane read). I had seen the film when it originally came out, but I bought the book a few years after that and didn't realize they were related (dollar stores sell alot of dead/old leftover stock)... I never ended up reading the book though, lol. I forgot it at home and it's just been sitting on a bookshelf in my living room for 5 years now. Every year since, at least once, I remember it's there, consider reading it and then just forget about it.. Thank goodness for this video!! I don't have to feel bad about never reading it now!

Honestly, a whodunit monster story sounds appealing. A love triangle doesn't, but I like the idea of a "who is the monster" and it turning out to be someone close to the protagonist. From a plot perspective, the twist does sorta make sense, but it is a really crappy thing to not include the ending. I really wish someone would use the whodunit monster thing again, where the focus isn't on how to we kill/find the monster, but instead on who the monster is.

Anything that is mainstream and hugely popular is going to have criticism. It doesn’t mean it’s not successful. Harry Potter is banned and hated in many religious areas of America, does that mean Harry Potter is a hated and disastrous franchise? Also Hardwicke only directed the first film, and it was from her imagery and filmmaking, that a whole ass genre of copycats followed as well as parodies and skits. It still has memes and references made it for it to this day, more than 10 years after it’s release. A pretty big impact to be made on culture for an indie director. I think you could call that an accomplishment.

I seriously doubt Joe would be calling the actual existence of the franchise a disaster if they were actually referring to Twilight being one. Obviously it was successful financially and popularity wise. That doesn't mean the writing is good. Something itself can be garbage and still be successful. Think of it like the banana duct taped to a wall. Tons of people hate that it was referred to as art and would say its a disaster in terms of a well made art piece. That doesn't mean it wasn't crazy popular and crazy expensive. Successfulness happens to often be the result of a fundamental disaster.

Tbh…. I kinda like the idea of having a book’s chapter being only accessible through a countdown online. It kinda feels like waiting for google’s Santa tracker to open up; you get to play the games & have fun (read the book), and then at the end you get to watch Santa go around the world (end the chapter). I don’t think a final chapter being withheld is…. A good idea lol, but maybe like a bonus chapter could be cool? Like you know how certain books have exclusive chapters if you buy them from specific retailers? But it would be more accessible if it were free online, ya know? Maybe an epilogue or an additional chapter would be cool to have to wait for. But I’d make it more fun to wait, too; like the cipher hunt, how that built up and a bunch of cryptic clues were left and stuff? Idk haha. Def could have been executed better, but I do like the idea

i dont know if what im about to mention is a tie-in novel/show combo but theres this show on Netflix called YOU thats based on the book YOU, and the writer usually releases each book a few months before the correlating season comes out. Only thing is the show doesnt really follow the book that much anymore, i think only the first season was actually book accurate, but the show is amazing and I’ve heard that the books are really good too, so you should definitely try those out

I know that no one cares but I think it’s relevant…? The last school I worked at was the high school that Catherine Hardwicke graduated from and so when Twilight came out and blew up all the students on campus went crazy for it. Apparently students were actually biting each other and dressing up like characters from the movie. Anyways the teachers that were working there during that time hated Twilight because of that. When I heard about this I thought it was the funniest thing because I was a fan as well although not to that extreme 😂

This actually solves a mystery in my life that I didn't know was a mystery. I read the novel close to when it came out and sort of shrugged off the ending as some artistic pretentiousness. Months later I saw the movie and got really confused by the ending, wondering if I had actually finished reading the book. Neither movie nor book were great, so i never bothered to go back and see the book's ending. But now i know! I did read book to completion. It was just a dumb set up

Story time! Last year when this was on Netflix, I threw this on for background noise, never having seen it before. I was completely transfixed by the astonishing shape and scale of the wasted potential on display. I decided I would rewatch it every day and while it was on I would work on my own, better adaptation of the Red Riding Hood fairy tale. I did not keep that promise... but I AM almost 6000 words into a version of the story set in rural Renaissance France. If I ever finish it, I will update this comment.

This could've easily been solved by having the book ending in a different way from the movie, or on a way that makes you think it's one character and then on the movie it's revealed to be another. It's tricky but a competent writer could have been capable of it and other media franchises like NGE have different endings too

I like this movie and I own the director's two behind the scenes books! The twilight one was great with lots of details but the red riding hood one is pretty much just the script with scraps on the side. I imagine that's why it didn't do so well. There was very little behind the scenes and was basically just a script. Hope that helps!

Honestly I feel like the lack of an ending made sense. And how it was handled worked?: Open ended mystery that keeps people guessing and hyped for many months. (its a love hate relationship having to make theories) Whilst also EVENTUALLY giving people who were upset by a lack of conclusion, the closure they need. It also makes sense that they'd eventually release the book again with the final chapter, if not for the folks who want that chapter, but for the sake of preservation.

I hate that this didn't work out and until the very end of the video, I didn't remember this being a thing, but I now have a slightly more-than-vague memory of it, and I actually wanted to see it. Unfortunately, I feel two months was too long for people to sit on that, and had the book been released a week to a month before the movie, I think it would've turned out WAY better; it's just not smart to leave people in suspense for an epilogue for long, as it leaves them a chance to drum up many possibilities and hold it to such a high standard that it then becomes nearly impossible to vault over.

I was like 8 when twilight came out and as much as I keep this info to myself, I officially became a twi-hard sometime shortly before the new moon movie was released and I read all the books (including the midnight sun leak) within a week lmao. I definitely read all the books multiple times, and though I used to be so ashamed of my obsession, but now I look back on the saga, esp the first movie with fondness and nostalgia. Despite only seeing two of her films, I had also always chose to think of Catherine hardwicke as a very talented director, SOLELY basing my opinion on the movie Thirteen starring Nikki reed and Evan Rachel wood and writing twilight off as a pass because though it’s not a masterpiece direction-wise.. everything in that first movie is EXACTLY how I imagined it while reading, to a T, even the weird green tint lmao 💀. I’m rethinking my opinion tho bc while thirteen is still one of my favs, I honestly don’t think it was that special in terms of how it was directed.. it just feels like it because of the early 2000s vibe. I think the reason the movie is so special is honestly only because of how amazing the acting is, as well as the script and the heavy subject matter. I say all this as context for my possible theory that maybe hardwicke relies less on amazing directing skills and more on gimmicky tactics and talented actors to get people to overlook her mediocrity as a director 🤔🤔 I could be wrong tho maybe her movies I haven’t seen are amazing and she’s simply a directorial genius

Oh I was so mad. I remember buying this book hoping to read and enjoy it…only to learn there was no ending. I threw that book in the trash. Revealing a plot twist wouldn’t have killed the movie so long as it was GOOD! Once you watch Scream you still rewatch it despite knowing the plot twist. Screw this damn book.

I loved this movie and was obsessed with Peter’s character when it first came out I was 12 at the time and haven’t watched it since so decided to rewatch today and can say my opinion on the movie has changed it was so terrible I ended up feeling bad for Amanda Seyfried she’s an amazing actress that was in a shit movie glad it didn’t ruin her career.
