I survived 15yrs of opiate addiction and have been sober 10yrs. Most people don't know that Marijuana is the number 1 thing used to help get through withdrawal. I no longer partake but I definitely advocate for Marijuana.

I've tried MJ for my chronic pain issues. Indica, sativa - both make me so uncomfortable. Just don't like the getting high part of it. I'm currently using high CBD/low THC but only as a night-time sleep aid. Kratom is a better option for me, but I am still left with pain levels at 6-7/10.

Yeah, and people should also know that studies have consistently shown that U.S. states that have legalized weed see a drop in opiate addiction. Which makes a lot of sense to me. I've been enjoying weed for 20 years straight, so much benefit, zero problem. I say everyone should use weed/CBD (meaning adults, of course).

Doctor prescribed me Vicodin at 16 for a sports injury and within a month or 2 had started writing me scripts of oxycodone. I was on them for a year when I should have been cut off after month 1 or 2 and when he finally stopped writing me my prescription he didn’t ween me off or even tell me I would get withdrawals. The only reason he stopped is because the medical board of directors was investigating him for over prescribing and he ended up getting his license revoked. When I felt those cold turkey withdrawals it was absolute hell so I began buying off the street. Eventually the pills ran out and became way too expensive so I had no choice and ended up using heroin. I struggled with it for a few years but became sick and tired of being sick and tired so I checked myself into rehab and have been sober since 2016

My dad always told me that drugs and alcohol addiction ran in our family & that it destroyed families. I had my first drink at 23 and wept, I told my dad because I thought it was over. I’m so grateful for all of the knowledge and wisdom he shared with my sisters and I. We don’t drink, and definitely do not do drugs. He informed us since we were able to understand. He walked out his sobriety years before he had us, and till this day he remains sober. (40 years clean) Knowledge really is power. Talk to your children, take the time to explain and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable with them about your own struggles. It makes a huge difference.

I struggled with an Oxy addiction for years. I pissed away all my inheritance(80k). Pissed my away my college degree. Pissed away the love of my life. Pissed away all my friendships. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I'll never forget that feeling when you wake up and you your 1st thought is how do I get pills. It's awful. You can't describe it to somebody that hasn't been through it but it's like when your not high you're having a constant panic attack about how to get more. I know it it'll sound weird but when I started I didn't think it was possible that I could get addicted. Like literally didn't think it could happen to me. I'm to good a person for it to happen to me. Yea it doesn't care where your from or who you are. Anyways stay away from drugs kids. If your trying to be cool and fit in and they have drugs, there not the friends you want. Don't even do it recreationally.

I appreciate your effort to get clean and the warning, but some of the us don't get addicted and would like to be able to use whatever we want legally. I've used opiates a lot over the decades, all of them except fent and never had a problem. When I was on day 2 or 3, my innate self preservation reflex would kick in. I've never enjoyed being high day after day, it gets boring and I start to miss the sharpness of sober reality. However I do love to be high occasionally. I wish I could buy morphine or heroin opium, hydrocodone etc. and be certain it wasn't fentanyl. Some of us can use and not spiral, I've done it my whole life, lately not at all out of fear of od from fake drugs

I am in the middle of having a post implanted in my jaw to replace a broken tooth. While not excruciating, the pain was enough to keep me awake for a few nights. Neither the dentist nor my doctor would prescribe any pain meds. They basically told me to just deal with it. Providers are now terrified of prescribing opioid analgesics, even for surgical patients who would benefit from them.

And THAT is the problem! People who have addiction problems will be addicted no matter what. I’ve been on painkillers for YEARS. I’ve never experienced any euphoria or other “good/fun” side effects, but I have to drive three hours and jump through a ton of hoops to keep getting the meds that keep me from being bedridden. People were cut cold turkey and self deleted because the pain is unbearable and they were no longer going to get relief. Like everything else in this country, it’s like a pendulum, and it swings too far one way, someone “corrects” it only to swing too far the other way 🙄

Ive had 4 reconstruction surgeries from skiing injuries starting in 2000s when opiates would be prescribed. What I learned is that ibuprofen actually reduces pain better than opiates which actually just change ur state of mind to where you dont seem to mind the pain. Now when I was directly post Op thats different they give u a clicker the doses max of 3 clicks per 4 hour period. After gettin out of the hospital I found Ibuprofen actually works better for that type of pain

Both my mother and stepfather were doctors. Even in their early 30’s in the late 1980’s, they confided at the dinner table that they felt something was wrong and manipulative about the manner of the “drug reps”. Drug reps saved my life... Im sad the hospitals here where I know med staff have ban reps... have a family member who is a doc and I would get strep all the time (a scary amount) as a kid... they came out with z-packs and gave my fam member samples which they took some home and had the rest at the office ... I got strep right before I was going abroad (literally the night before I was to leave) and they came through with a z-pack sample (the entire 5 doses- which wow! Only 5 pills!) for me! And the z-packs are amazing! I have taken them ever since whenever I need antibiotics ... but the pill samples were the best bc I could get stuff I needed right away! If I hadn’t gotten the z-pack that night (all the pharmacies were closed by then aside from in ERs), I would’ve gotten terribly sick from the strep 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m wondering why they didn’t give you Hydrocodone? But seriously, these days people with legitimate chronic pain are having a difficult time getting pain medication. Tylenol kills your liver and Ibuprofen kills your kidneys. Opioid medication doesn’t damage your body. It’s the Tylenol that goes with Oxycodone and Norco that’s more dangerous. People have been saved from the OD of Oxy and Norco; only to die because they were in liver failure.

Coming from being an addict and a part of the Oxycontin era, I managed to get out of it. Only after 17 years of moving from Oxycontin to Perc 30s to heroin for the last 8 years of my addiction. I have lost so many friends to opiate overdoses. I have been clean for 8 years as of 1/4/2023. To say the least, that shit still comes to me in my dreams about using and waking up feeling high. It never goes away even to this day. This shit is a real and, still a struggle for so many people to this day.

exactly The entire time I was in rehab. I couldn't stop thinking about it cause all we did was talk about it and talk about it and talk and the cravings were getting worse and worse. So as soon as I got out I wanted to get high again. At that time, I obviously didn't wanna stop. At one Point I said to myself you have a family coming it's everything you always wanted so find a way out now. The great things I have now are because I did stop and I do not wanna ever, ever go back. I will never touch a synthetic drug or alcohol again and I have zero cravings ever. So I don't get these people that say Drug addiction is a disease You can't help it. No, it is not a disease It is in your mind and you can help it. It is your will to stop living that life, That is all that does. It is your own will don't blame it on anything else. You just need to stop. That's it. You want it to end you just actually need to want to stop and that's all. The path out physically is Cannabis it's saved me and I now devote my life to it and teaching others how to create their own natural medicines from the Cannabis plant. I've found my purpose and it's the help ppl get off hard drugs with the Cannabis strains I'm creating. Try 1:1 CBD / THC cannabis it works wonders for the shocking withdrawals and bone pain.

I now eat healthy, lost 80 pounds, started training Jujitsu and none of that was possible before. I’ve been on them for about 5-6 years now. In my case, it took me being so sick and tired of being "sick and tired, and in withdrawals, etc" to realize that I can actually take these kinds of meds and use them as directed. But I MUST admit, it ALSO took me to realize that I needed to get AWAY from the ppl I was "hanging around" with, to finally be able to do this for myself! I mean It's completely different for everyone. But I absolutely have to thank the support I had around me, bc if it wasn't for those supportive ppl, I wouldn't have been able to do it...just facts. The topic of addiction really pulls at my heart strings. I sympathize so much with everyone who suffers from this. I 100% recognize the addictive tendencies within my personality. I’m so blessed that I’ve never had any life changing injury or surgery, especially during the Purdue epidemic. I have a horrible feeling that I would have become a statistic, and I’m aware that the possibility is unfortunately always there. We all trust that our doctors have our health at the core of their intentions.. RIP to all the victims of this awful epidemic. I also want to note that once, in Arkansas, I was prescribed Percocet for a sprained ankle. Very mil pain, but I was still prescribed a singular pill. It was the most intense euphoria ever. I immediately understood the danger of these drugs. I’m so thankful and blessed they were never at my disposal.

I watched the documentary "The Trade" on HBO and one thing that changed my entire perspective on addiction is that at a certain point people aren't chasing the drug for the high, they're chasing it so they stop feeling deathly sick. Once you build a tolerance to opioids & your serotonin drops off a cliff when you're sober & you're withdrawal symptoms are firing, people are actually medically sick at that point. The government needs to solve the issues that causes people to turn to drugs & also start treating addiction as an illness and begin looking for ways to cure that illness rather than criminalizing it.

I worked in the SUD/MH (substance abuse/mental health) field for a decade, being drawn to it after overcoming my own issues. I was non-medical staff and mostly outreach on the front lines. I've administered Narcan over 30 times, had 6 people die in my lap (4 of them friends) , had to call families to tell them their children were gone or in ICU. Between personally and professionally i've lost hundreds (if not over 1,000) beautiful souls. My primary Dr recently told me I've probably experienced as much trauma as many active duty military he's treated. For my well being, I had to step away from the genocide thats happening in OUR country (just take a look at Kensington PA). Each year since (I believe) 2021 we lose the same amount of lives as we did during the entire vietnam war. The fallout of parentless children, decimated communities, social divide IN ADDITION to the mind numbing death rate is something that is yet to be known. It made me feel as if the three years counted for nothing. They tried to load me up on prescription but told them I wouldn't take the pain medicine. They got upset and made me feel like a jack a** but they don't know is that. I wanted those bottles almost more than eating or drinking. Every Dr appointment they throw more pills in my face and I can't take them. Every time I say no it's like my body releases a chemical. I instantly get a high for a few minutes. As if my body is trying to force me to take it. It's crazy that some of these doctors are just making future problems.

He just fell asleep, and didn't breath as carbon dioxide accumulated in his blood, and killed him.

How many years was your friend just fine, taking care of his family.. Millions were on pain meds and doing cocaine non stop and handling their crap.. heck looks at the 80's i wonder why there weren't millions of od's then. because people were getting clean drugs. The whole system is a scam.. People should be able to do drugs and be able to get clean drugs. and if they want off them get the help to get off them along with mental help. After a year my doc sat me down and said he was cutting me off all opiate based pain meds and I would have to find another way to deal with my back pain. Maine being a medical cannabis state, he recommended I seek pain relief at a med cannabis dispensary. Long story short, I reject opiates, it's in my medical records and I am most thankful for a doctor that put my health over big pharma payouts.

The recent show Dope Sick might be one of the realest and best representations of what it was like back when OxyContin was hitting the scene. I was someone who was prescribed them and spent a lot of time in doc’s offices. I lived and watched all this shit blow up while it was also contributing to the horrible decisions that I was making in my life back then. I should not of been prescribed the amount of pain meds I was if any at all honestly. The whole course of events from pharmaceutical companies to people to doctors is something out of a movie but it was real life. Dope Sick shows this in a way that is super relatable, plus Michael Keaton fuckin kills it in his role! The after effects of OxyContin are still taking an epic toll and have turned areas like Kensington in Philly into war zones filled with souls who have yet to overcome what the pharmaceutical companies started over 20 years ago. It’s sad. However, there is some light in these places though, such as myself and others that I work with helping people find the strength to overcome addiction and mental health challenges, and then supplying them with the means to do so.

@MrMonro27
@MrMonro27 Жыл бұрын
@@fogums I agree and while it’s still pretty far off from the compensation that they deserve to pay, multiple pharmaceutical companies have been held liable and made to pay cities and townships large settlements. Philadelphia has recently received a pretty substantial Opioid Settlement fund that is being used to strengthen the city and providers with resources that are much needed. I forget the exact amount but it’s in the hundreds of millions. A lot a places throughout the country have received this as well but our amazing media doesn’t seem to want to cover the things that are affecting the country in real life in real time. There is also a lot of class action suits against pharmaceutical companies that are still in the courts both from people and municipalities for the damage that they have wrought. I wholeheartedly agree with you and like I said it’s def not what they deserve yet, but at least some things have already happened and some are still ongoing. If your interested look up the Opioid Settlement funds for where you live to see what they are getting and what they plan on doing with it so places can be held accountable to actually use the money the right way.

I've had numerous surgeries in my life, so far, both necessary & elective. I'm very grateful I had opiate pain meds for my recovery. I can't imagine recovering without them. There must be some personal accountability. When a doctor writes you a script, you take it as ordered, period, unless otherwise directed. Once they taper you off and/or discontinues the medicine, then that's it - no more. Why do people blame those who made the medicine. I'm grateful for it.

If an able-bodied person suddenly woke up in my body I’m 98% sure they would think they were dying. Why aren’t there more/any articles in the #NYT #TIME chronicling the people who benefit from these medications? Whose quality of life would be insufferable without them? I just finished watching American Pain now and while I did watch this episode of JRE with Mariana, I either wasn't paying attention when she talked about Darren's upcoming doc, or it fell off the wagon. I find it interesting that Mariana shares how the brothers had already gotten into legal troubles before, and honestly had nothing to lose. Having a criminal conviction on one's record, impedes access to so many things: sustainable employment, housing, financial aid to name the most vital supports. People have no other option than to return to a life of crime, as a means of survival, and when there's already a charge on your record, there truly is nothing left to lose, because what's another charge? Rates of recidivism are directly correlated to barriers preventing those leaving the penal system, from accessing vital supports needed.
