I think there’s some context here. If you read Paul’s letters to the early Church, he addresses how some of the newest Christians were still practicing pagan rituals, and eating food dedicated to pagan idols. Corinthians has a few of these examples.
@seb.htc90611 ай бұрын
Here’s some context 1. Idolatry and Meat Sacrificed to Idols: • 1 Corinthians 8:4-6: “So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.” 2. Participation in Pagan Feasts: • 1 Corinthians 10:14-22: “Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. […] Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.” 3. Pagan Philosophies: • Colossians 2:8: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.”

They're surprised because our current culture sees psychedelics as something fringe. The idea that psychedelics are a big part of the origins of our culture is a contradiction to this fringe view. This tension combined with the difficulty of actually providing concrete proof for historical psychedelic use, causes people to doubt these claims.
@tylere.843611 ай бұрын
@@erikpoephoofdNot only psychedelics, but also diluted alcohol for water consumption; for millenia peoples didn't always have access to pure safe clean drinking water, so they used wine, mead, etc. and diluted it down so it is not really alcoholic and it kills all the bacteria that would be in the water. The Romans used wine obviously for this purpose and called it "posca", added some herbs, salt, and even honey and coriander to give it a nice citrus taste.

This was likely from pagans who became Christian and didn't completely give up their pagan practices. We're specifically instructed in scripture over and over again to maintain a sober mind. Below are some examples. 1 Peter 5:8 - Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 1:13 - Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; Titus 2:12 - Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 1 Peter 4:7 - But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 1 Timothy 3:2 - A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Titus 2:2 - That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. Titus 2:6 - Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. Ephesians 5:18 - And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

From a a Christian perspective, the only thing that concerns me with this narrative, as he pointed out as being odd, is why would the Catholic Church preserve this obviously anti christian artifact? These findings are certainly historical, and no doubt very interesting, but we all know that 2nd, 3rd, and 4th century Christianity is rife with heretical and obscure cults and unbiblical beliefs/doctrines and traditions that arose and formed into their own religions. These findings only further support that hypothesis and do nothing to delegitimize actual Christianity, as all of the things mentioned in this video are clearly pagan and anti-Christian.

I can only speak for myself, since acid affects different people in different ways (usually based on personality and the state of mind when acid is dropped). For me, acid brought out the devil in me. I always saw the devil when I looked at myself in the mirror. So much so that I could only look at myself for a very short time, then recoiled at what I saw. I never got violent, but I became very anti-social and sought to be alone. I can't recall having a Christian thought in my mind at any time during the trip.

very interesting outlook, I’ve had opposite reactions as a christian taking psychedelics. Specifically shrooms make me feel very connected to everything around me and I can practically feel God’s love and presence. Idk call me crazy but atleast for me it makes know that there is a higher power where our energy goes after death.

Drug use was very common in the old world. The word assassin comes from a group of skilled killers in the 1100s. To cope with the lifestyle they used a lot of hash. They became known as the hashshshin because of their hash use. Eventually the word morphed into assassin.

The loom has always been associated with fate. My interpretation is that there was an idea to have 11 friends of a recently deceased go underground with the body and get wasted one last time. Three days later the party ended and the men turned back to humans after being pigs due to intoxication

So you’re posititing about nightshade hallucinogens right? This is where the “underworld” archetype comes from after-all, not to mention the multi-day length trips as well.
@calamfischer70099 ай бұрын
@@Ryan88881 there is no mention of hallucinogens, was there? Knowledge was passed down in story form. Probably best to pass down an interesting story rather than a boring one. The Greek stories are probably the most entertaining and explained the world.
@Ryan888819 ай бұрын
@@calamfischer7009 You said "get wasted" and of course hallucinogens (nightshades like belladonna) were mentioned in both Greek and Roman mythos so idk what you mean by "no mention". Are you talking about your own statement? Because 3 day-long trips, zoanthropy, catacomb-based rituals, etc... Nightshades are written all over this. Nobody even comes up with such ridiculous and lofty notions or ideas for something like *catacombs* without chthonic tropane-based nightshades being clearly linked to it. I think you've just gotten numb to preset bodies of traditions and lore and think humans just naturally start this weird ritual shit without psychoactives or influence from other societies/cultures that did. Well spoiler alert; they don't. "Probably best to pass down an interesting story rather than a boring one." Are you really saying what I think you're saying? Because ancient Greeks and Romans *not* using hallucinogens isn't even a real theory. We already know full-well they did use them. The "theoretical" part here is whether or not Mycenaean and/or ancient Roman occult rites were transferred to early Christians. Also passing down a story because it's interesting.... You're real cute lol. I've been researching world history for a while now, as well as mythopoetic etiology and.. that's just not how that works. This is totally an example of projecting modern-day norms/modalities onto ancient civilizations in the most ostentatious fashion possible. You realize the ancient Greco-Roman world was before even the Middle Ages right? Do you have any idea how people in theological/magico-religious circles conducted themselves back then?
@Ryan888819 ай бұрын
@@calamfischer7009 Also I actually meant to say 'Hellenistic' rather than Mycenaean specifically here but it doesn't really matter because Mycenaean mythos/religion was the precursor to Hellenistic religion anyways, and the precursor for Mycenaean religion was Minoan religion from the island of Crete. And yes, the Minoans used drugs in rituals as well because back then that's what "ritual" basically meant well over 90% of the time. Not using that as the metric or justification here but just trying to put things into perspective for you. Also, for what it's worth mandrake is mentioned twice in the Bible itself but that's beside the point.
@calamfischer70099 ай бұрын
@@Ryan88881 I've never heard of belladonna being for pleasure. Great poison tho. Doesn't make sense to use an easy way to OD when they knew about ergot. I wasn't alive back then so I dont know the exact day to days of thier lives but they did leave behind some cool stories. I have a theory that they used Medusa to explain south america. Griffins to explain north america. Cerberus for Australia and new Zealand. Atlas for Antarctica. And that's just what makes sense at first look. If you can wrap your head around that. Cool stories... Lol Maybe chemically altered or knowledge is power and the best way to pass down knowledge was with stories. Considering we still know these stories even today. Not boring stories

Christianity is basically Judaism except that we belief that what Jesus said is true. Our Eucharist is Judaism's Passover with the belief that Jesus is our sacrificial lamb in the ritual. The Last Supper has been in popular culture for centuries. Also Paul and the Apostles on numerous occasions have to reprimand gentile believers (in Christ) to abandon all aspects of pagan religion and pagan things that Christianity / Judaism deem sinful. Much like Abraham had to abandon the pagan ways (idol worship) of the Chaldeans.

So one issue I am hearing. He is combining Christianity and Catholicism which are two totally different religions. Catholicism is strongly based in Idolatry and believing in things like purgatory where the dead are in a place of in-between but Christianity believes in a living god and that when your body dies you immediately go to your afterlife and there is no in-between. I was hoping for something solely focused on Christianity because combining them makes all this irrelevant.

Wanna know what it REALLY means? That’s almost certainly Sophia: wisdom/pneuma/holy spirit/breath. The space isn’t for “funeral rites.” “Dying” doesn’t mean physical death. It’s a metaphor that means “dying” to who you’ve been and becoming conscious. Circe / Kirke (pronounced with hard Ancient Greek k’s) from the Odyssey scene, depicts men being raised from unconscious “beasts” on lower levels of consciousness, into a higher conscious / enlightened state. Notice it’s a woman at the center of both scenes, assisting men with their enlightenment. Why? Because men who accept and integrate the feminine aspect of their psyche (the Anima, a la Dr. Carl Jung) become conscious. It all perfectly fits together as place honoring those who entering a higher level state of awareness/ consciousness (probably helped along by drugs). And considering Sophia and the other symbolism, it was probably used by Gnostics. They understood the true meaning of the Jesus story. ;) Oh yeah, and of course early Christians and Gnostics used “pagan” imagery - they received the major of their knowledge and motifs of their stories from the thousands of years of wisdom/mysteries/myths they inherited from Sumerians/Egyptians/Greeks/Indus Valley, etc. Remember Jesus saying, “Forgive them, for they know not what they do?” I can only chuckle and shake my head and hope that later on this guy reveals the higher level meanings of these images. Because he sure doesn’t seem to know what he do-ing! ;) lol
