As much as I love Rickson and his passion for the breath, he gives a very very dangerous advise: to hyperventilate before diving. As a freediver and breathworker, i need to stress that this will lead to shallow water blackouts. You do not get more oxygen in, but you expel more CO2, which stops you from getting the urge to breathe. You will not get the urge to breath and you blackout. This often results in death unless you have someone rescue you. Never ever hyperventilate when diving. If you want to push your limits, learn to get comfortable with contractions and the urge to breathe.

Exactly. This comment should be liked up to the top
@nick-dq1hh2 жыл бұрын
You’re right. I’ve made a few comments, but people should know, this is not how humans truly breathe. This is dysfunctional, detached nose breathing he is describing. Like Wim Hof. Like you said, it might be better to just hold your breathe, as it’ll shoot signals to your diaphragm, which can help with proprioception and engagement. A diaphragm breathe can be a very hard concept once the muscle is lightly atrophied. All of us who can do deep diaphragm breathes know it’s not as simple as these guys make it out to be. All he’s doing in this video are shallow nose breathes.
@gertleroy2 жыл бұрын
Right on brother. As a freediving instructor and athlete, this is the worst thing he could have said about breathing. I've made a comment on this video as well but people dont seem to bother. This is how you blackout underwater. I wonder if Joe Rogan knew he was talking bullshit. Should have reacted.
@TS-xj5mt2 жыл бұрын
Is it possible that to hyperventilate and get rid of all the CO2 can help you stay longer comfortably but you should not push your limits because you could black out is that a fair statement? I'm just wondering if that's what he meant and if you free diver types agree with that logic but it just allows someone to stay longer without that panic feeling and you guys are saying but be very careful you don't stay too long because you could pass out.
@gertleroy2 жыл бұрын
@@TS-xj5mt on dry land yes you can try hyperventilation cause when you black out on your bed or on the floor you will just wake up again. no worries. but under water you'll be dead. The thing with hyperventilation is that the blackout can come without any warning. So there is no such thing as "i'm not pushing my limits". You'll be dead before you know it. So it is the worst advise ever to give to a newbie who wants to try out breathholding underwater.

Pull in at the diaphragm/inside your body. If you feel yourself sucking in at the top of nose only; dysfunctional breathing. Look at this man, I can see he’s not a truly proper breather. He’s doing dysfunctional nose breathing. Like Wim Hof. Look at any Wim Hof video, he does not remember and has not trained proper diaphragm breathing for years. He’s trained a type of tunnel vision breathing. You suck inside the chest, and it pulls from the top of the nose by default. The nose is at the top of your breathing system, not at the forefront of it. It takes practice, good health, good posture, some luck, and the ability to finally let go belief of how you are as a body. A proper diaphragm breathe is jarring. If you do a diaphragm breathe and it feels easy, very likely you’re doing it wrong. Do not do what this man says, the upper body/singular nose breathing is dysfunctional lung compensatory breathing alone. He has lost view of proper breathing, regardless of his physical feats and activities. You can be very active and still be a dysfunctional breather. It can be many things together, but mainly, the diaphragm is the vital piece to all the vivid ways we can breathe. Do not hyperventilate. You train your diaphragm, relaxed, deep breathing, it will coast you along through life. It gets so deep that it pulls compensatory neck muscles, which I’ve found studies confirming compensatory neck muscles participate in deep diaphragm breathing. A deep diaphrgam breathe takes time, and it always feels like work. It doesn’t feel like a normal breathe when your diaphragm pulls down, sucks air into your lungs through your nose, and you let go and it automatically brings air out if you do it right. Trust the younger people who are actually connected to their breathing and are honest. I’ve spent far more time on this, and been honest with myself in all ways about this, people like this are not truly functional breathers. Most of your talking and breathing you will feel in your chest once the diaphragm continually gets exercise. It’s a separate muscle. Once it is atrophied, like it does with all of us, you need to spend time getting it back into view, and the world becomes a very vivid place once the breathing system is back into posture. It will never feel natural to take your beginning diaphragm muscle movements to breathe. It fights you, trembles and feels unegageable at times, and it gets easier and easier as it pulls downs, trembles, and gets stronger. You need to do it alone or in a enclosed space because it can be guttural and not pleasant to look at or do. You can also just try it at intervals throughout the day. I would never turn someone in the wrong direction. I know this to be true, and objective. Looking at this man, he doesn’t know how to take a truly deep diaphragm breathe anymore.

Big facts! Back in 2019 I was hospitalized for a while. I had stage 3 cancer and pulmonary embolism at the same time. I was stressed, felt toxic and miserable. One thing kept me going was my breathing exercise and mental relaxation. I notice while in ICU my stressed out thoughts was increasing my already fast beating heart. I let all negative thoughts go and became at peace with the universe. It wasnt easy by I prevailed!

please never ever hyperventilate before diving - I am an apnoe freediver - thats how swimming pool black outs are happening and people are falling unconscious without noticing and then drowning... Hyperventilation lowers the CO2 in the blood, The body does not track the O2 in the blood, it only has sensors for CO2 concentration (acidity of the blood). If the CO2 concentration is getting higher then a certain point the dive reflex kicks in and you feel the urge to breathe. If you have lowered your CO2 so much through hyperventilation, you might not get to that point where you notice you need to breathe and you run out of O2 before that point - making you fall unconscious without noticing. Please get adapted to the urge of breathing and train to relax into that, but never hyperventilate for a dive - unless you are on a specific training schedule with a qualified buddy in apnea freediving sports.

I had a chi kung (which I believe translates to something like 'breathing training') book since I was a kid that talked right about this. The first thing was to teach how to get the habit of breathing with the diaphragm muscle. Specially men are conditioned to puff up the upper chest and hide their flaccid belly, which is a horrible habit for your breathing. With time, the diaphragm gets weak and rigid, with shorter movement range. It makes so the lower, deeper part of the lung don't get as much oxygenation as it could. I don't remember much of the "advanced" techniques the book told about in chi kung, but those basic breathing techniques and exercises helped me all along my life.

You do this for time/repetitions every day as an exercise. Then you practice doing that during actual exercise start with easy cardio exercise also for time. Your lungs and heart are muscles so you can and have to strengthen them. You have to do this every day. At first I started for just 5min and just keep working every day to beat my own time. It took months for me to see and feel the actual difference. It took me a year to finally get to 1mile. But once I did it pretty much rapidly my time started increasing after that in everything I did. The first 3months its going to suck its after the 6month that your body finally starts adjusting. Amazing man. Such a legend!.I am excited to watch. He is on the ball about breathing. Had to 'learn' myself as I developed anxiety. Such an easy idea but quite a lot of people still don't know. Glad I relearned. Best wishes all.

Not only does hyperventilation decrease the amount of oxygen available to you during your breath-hold, it also decreases your awareness of the urge to breathe. ... This, in short, is why the number 2 rule for freediving safety (after never dive alone), not to mention freediving performance, is “Never Hyperventilate”.
@alexesposito19042 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I hope everyone sees this so they don't try to hyperventilate before a dive. This can be very dangerous, especially for a beginner

But that doesn't change the fact that you can hold your breath longer.
@nzlwarrior9768 Жыл бұрын
Hes not freediving though so in this case hyperventilating is to calm the nervous system and enables you to exhale in such a controlled manner that the very moment you begin to inhale again its to full capacity from that point on you cease hyperventilation and switch to slow and deep breaths

And next thing you now just like that it appeared. This was amazing I can’t wait to listen to the whole interview. I’m soo excited this was awesome! Thanks and many prayers to both of these men!
