I became metabolically flexible after ditching pasta, bread, rice and sweets. It took me about two to three weeks and I was just eating fatty cuts of meat, veggies sautéed in ghee, butter or lard. Eggs and bacon for breakfast. Full fat greek yogurt. I lost my craving for junk food and I was 50/50 lean, but metabolically a mess, getting hangry 😫 and having to eat immediately or I would freak out. Now I can be hungry and I don't feel bad at all. I am 56 and work production and I have a lot of energy. All my blood numbers are excellent HDL 60 triglycerides 89 and the LDL the doctor looks at to write statin prescription is high but I did my homework and educated the kind doctor about LDL cholesterol. The most doctors are brainwashed and have not done any research on the harmful SAD diet. I am shocked that they don't promote nutrition. They focus on the drugs for BP and diabetes but not healing a human. I get it. It's what they studied for a decade. Their methods obviously are not working. And most people are in denial about their eating habits. It's almost impossible to school anyone on the proper diet.

Joe should know all this. I have watched so many podcasts over the years that had all this information. And I used it. But Mark hit the nail on the head with metabolic flexibility. I was never fat but was about 30 to 40 lbs lbs over weight, had acid reflux that was destroying my esophagus. Was prediabetic with high blood pressure. My blood labs did not look very good and I was 66 at the time. Both sides of my family were diabetic with grandmother losing both legs to it. I was headed in the same direction as them. Decided to do something about it. So I started strict keto with intermittent fasting. No food for 16 hours a day. Did it for 2 years. After that time I lost 35 lbs, 6 in off my Waist, acid reflux went away in 2 weeks, my bold pressure went from 155/95 to 90/60 last visit to the doctor. No longer prediabetic and my blood labs are all normal. I’m at the weight and waist I was in my 20s. I’m doing very low carb now with min of 12-16 hours of fasting for the last 2 years. I have not lost or gained a pound in 2 years but I have put on more muscle. Not a lot but I don’t exercise other then household chores and working in my yard. My diet is mostly protein, fat then carbs in that order instead of the other way around. I test my blood and keytones a few times a week. My keytones are low but they are there. My body now recognizes both fat and carbs as fuel. I have become metabolically Flexible again.

@Snap Dragon Mark Sisson is saying that although you can do intermittent fasting and longer fasts without being on a ketogenic diet, it is much easier on a keto diet because in ketosis the brain is receiving most of its energy from ketones. Therefore, in ketosis you rarely get hungry or lightheaded like you would if you were fasting while eating normally or just restricting calories on a traditional diet. That hunger and dizziness comes from blood sugar being really low. The brain requires around 400 calories a day. In keto, it gets roughly 320 of those calories (80%) from ketones made by the liver from your own body fat. Also in keto, the body can take glycerol and small amounts of amino acids to get the other 80 calories (20%). By contrast, if a person isn't in ketosis, the necessary enzymes aren't activated to feed the brain this way. It takes roughly 5 days of restricting carbohydrates to 20 grams a day or less in order to ramp up ketones and roughly 2 weeks to fully activate all the fat-burning enzymes. Once you do, you're feeding yourself with your own body fat nearly all the time because blood sugar/insulin are low and largely irrelevant, fat and ketones are constantly being mobilized and oxidized for fuel, and you're rarely hungry because the brain/body never has to deal with the normal consequences of low blood sugar from not eating enough carbohydrates. This all leads to a euphoric feeling most of the time and especially when fasting for 24 hours or more. It's mainly because the ketones provide a steady source of energy all the time whether you have access to food or not. Once a person gets past the first week or so of transitioning into keto, it's smooth sailing.
@nancyj7952 жыл бұрын
@Snap Dragon Congratulations! I know someone who had fasted blood sugar readings of 299, 280, and 265 (considered severe, irreversible Type 2 diabetes), and in one month of keto his fasted blood sugar was 109. It's probably in the 80s or 90s by now. If you want a great resource, search KZbin for Dr. Eric Westman, MD, who is a professor of medicine at Duke University Medical School. He's easily one of the most well-known medical doctors in the field of obesity, diabetes, and ketosis. He cuts through all the nonsense and gives you the straight story on keto. You can look up his so-called "Page 4" of foods you can eat on keto (including how much in some cases). It's makes everything so easy. He doesn't advocate for fasting but he's not necessarily against it either. He just says he's trying to make keto as simple as possible so people can start getting the benefits with little effort.

@rickchyczewski5762 жыл бұрын
That's more of a bodybuilder diet... And I swear Bill Phillips is a bodybuilder but I could be wrong. The point of eating every 3 hours is for protein purposes. You body can only use so much and you want to take advantage of that if you are lifting for mass. Some bodybuilders even get up in the middle of the night and eat another meal. It takes a lot of calories and as much protein synthesis as you can get to keep big muscle mass. Bill brought the abcde diet or whatever it's called to the US. That is where you find your maintenence calorie intake for the day. You then go 2weeks of 500 calorie surplus and the 2 weeks of a calorie defect. Why? The 2 weeks of oveteatibg(while training) raises all the body's muscle building hormones. After the 2 week mark it stops and you start putting on more fat than muscle. During the deficit you lose more fat than muscle. It's like 2 steps forward and 1 back. These calories are consumed in 6 meals throughout the day. A lot of guys said it does not work. A lot of guys say it does. Everyone is different. It worked for me very well over the course of 2 months than not so much after that. There are variations of this diet with the most popular being 5 on and 5 days off. I found I lost too much weight that way.

Okay.... Female - went from 190lbs to 130lbs in 10 months and have kept it off for over 2 years. I usually do OMAD 5 days a week and eat regurlarly on vacations and weekends. It changed my metabolism. I literally cannot gain weight. I can still lose but maintaining is effortless.
@dimitrijekrstic75672 жыл бұрын
Your metabolism is exactly the same. It never changed. What changed is that you switched to eating in a smaller time window in which you can't stuff yourself as much. One meal a day? Proves the point I made about IF even harder. You likely can't ingest as much at one sitting as you could at 3, 4 or 5 during the whole day. Is that so hard to comprehend? Any calorie deficit producing diet, like the one you mentioned, will give you the exact same result. It's the laws of physics. You are burning more than you are ingesting, thus you are using some of your bodies reserves. Cannot get any simpler

There is such a thing as losing fat too fast. For me, it led to the worst attack of gout. I couldn't walk on my foot for days. People say cherries, cherry extract, acv, potassium. I dropped 30 pounds with a program of fasting. I dove in for a 24 hour fast once a week, and incorporated a 7 mile fat burning hole halfway into each of those fasting periods. I stopped eating after 9pm, then transitioned into a 2MAD with (hopefully) 12 hour IF between meals. I played with extending those 24 hour fasts until I was able to fast 48 hours once a month, later one a quarter. Now I periodically fast for 36 hours at a time, all of those taking the place of one of my 24 hour fasts. Your body gets in its highest fat burning mode after 14 hours of not eating and remains for about an hour or so, this is the ideal time to excercise if wanting to burn fat for those who use intermittent fasting.
@synergyrevolution23323 жыл бұрын
I don't know about that. Probably strength training before or at the very beginning of the fast. But during the fast? Every time you strength train your body looks for glucose and burns whatever glucose it can, this was shown by Dr. Peter Attia when he monitored his ketones and blood glucose round the clock while in ketosis and went through his daily routine, every time he strength trained, he went out of ketosis. Strength training before fasting, even a very intense session that'll leave you lying on the ground could speed things up because it quickly increases your sensitivity to insulin and that's one of the first few things that needs to happen before you shift into ketosis. You'd have to intermittently fast for a few weeks to get the same sensitivity to insulin that you would get from one high intensity strength training session.

I was 125kg and got down to 77kg. I'm 6 foot tall. I cut out all sweets and chocolates and was having protein shakes, once or twice a day. I still ate everything else I normally had. Even McDonald's once a week. I just cut all my portions in half and only ate when by stomach started rumbling. And even then, when I first started, I'd only eat a few mouthfuls to shut my stomach up. And it wasn't just a diet. I spent 9 years studying martial arts. 3 doing karate then the rest doing Muay Thai. With a year gap between the 2. Karate wasn't very intense and seemed to just get me into a fat burning mode, I only lost a little weight but gained stamina. And when I started Muay Thai. I went from class twice a week to 3 times a week and a fight night when we just sparred for 2 hours. Then the weight just melted off. I hadn't been below 100kgs since I was 16 and then I was 77kgs of muscle and sinew at 27. I started karate when I was 21. And after that the only thing left was to pack on more muscle. Only I had a stroke caused by a blood clot and it pretty much all went out the window. Healthy again and trying to get my figure back lol

Intermittent fasting for years since Joe was introduced to it by Dr. Rhonda. She was compelling in telling about the anti inflammatory aspects along with longevity promotion. It's kept me from eating breakfast since then. It's been probably 5 years. It's kept me in great shape for a guy who does almost no cardio, ever. Tree Work and lifting. I always recommend intermittent fasting.

Honestly from all the anti-fasting medical disinformation I had worked into my brain over the years I always convinced myself that the symptoms of my anxiety were because I had 'low blood sugar' so anytime I started to feel a little off I'd go "Oh shit I need to eat something!" I have since done a 48 hour fast with no ill effects so I know that I can completely run through my carb stores and my body will still run just fine.

I weighed about 395lbs at the start of the year, managed to lose about 50lbs in the past six months by mostly walking about 10 miles every day. However, the progress slowed down a bit the last month or so. So, recently I turned to fasting, I eat in a period of 8 hours, then for the next 16 hours I'm fasting. It's been only about ten days, and I already feel the difference. Mostly, now when I eat during the day I just don't feel full, like I ate too much. It's a good feeling to have.

I do keto once a year for 3 months. First time I started I was dying for first 10 days or so. Now, I have only first day a little hard and then no problems at all. I think that is the flexibility he is talking about.

Ever since doing keto for 6 months (strict) and experimenting with OMAD/IF before and during it, I can now go the entire day not eating without too many noticeable side effects. I don't stick to a strict diet, IF plan, or anything restrictive these days (besides limiting natural sugar and cutting out added sugar) yet I have that flexibility. I don't wake up and within an hour develop crazy hunger pains like most people I know who start the day with bagels, pancakes, waffles, pastries, cereal, etc. That irritability, fatigue, and those hunger pains are just seen as normal and taken for granted by most people. Many act concerned or even suspicious when I haven't eaten yet but say I'm not hungry.

Yes, and people that do keto long term will struggle to use carbs at first. The first time you switch to fats it takes two to six weeks to adapt, after you've done it before it will usually take 24-48 hours to adapt from carbs to fat.

As a physician who treats obesity, its almost comical that I have come to the EXACT same conclusion and have seen intermittent fasting work really well. Fasting has helped folks loose weight, lower blood pressure, and often cure diabetes type 2 altogether. Limiting factor is patient buy in and some trust that fasting will work. Metabolic adjustment needs time, 2-4 weeks often. The obsession with having small frequent meals is unfortunate and its killing a whole generation of Americans. One thing not mentioned here is daily consumption of liquid food (milk, fresh fruit juice, mayonnaise, cane sugared coffee/tea, ranch dressing, beer, wine) are also harmful to consume at more than 3-4 servings a week. Liquid foods are energy dense and delay fasting state onset. Liquid food also illicit strong demand of insulin, which over time, burns out the pancreas. Just another factor likely contributing to increase in diabetes rates.

I started intermittent fasting last year when I realized I was too fat to hunt elk. my starting weight was 280 and I'm now down to 220, not an amazing change or anything but I'm completely ok with the progress I've made because both my body AND mind are feeling much better, I'm sleeping better at night and waking up feeling much more energetic and alive. I am eating once a day so I do 22hr intermittent fasting and now that I've stuck to it, I don't get hungry until it's time to eat! the benefits are too much to list and I always tell my friends and family that the reason fasting isn't a popular diet/ lifestyle because nobody can make any money off of you when you stop shoving your face full of diet pills and energy drinks!

I believe In this because I was fat for most of my childhood, I’m 6’2” was 230lbs as a teenager. I crash dieted ate nothing but chicken and brown rice and oatmeal down to 165lbs. Basically lost all my fat. Then I gained lean muscle up to 200lbs without gaining much fat. I had to eat like an animal to gain weight. I would gain maybe only a couple pounds a month. Just these past couple years I let myself go entirely due to depression and I’ve hit 265lbs. Binge eating, restaurants, takeout etc… when I was In shape and training like a weightlifter in the gym could eat literally anything and Hardly gain a pound. Then once I got sedentary for only a year, and continued eating bad food… I gained a ton of weight. Now I’m at a point where I’m always hungry, always tired, and no matter what I do, if I lose 10 lbs I put it back on so easily from only a week of letting go. It’s like I got my metabolism to such a healthy awesome place where I could be fit with minimal effort. And now my body will only change with max effort. I feel like I have to crash diet again to get back to where I was. I can’t lift weights like I used to. My joints hurt. I always injure myself because I try to progress too quickly cause I’m just not the same as I used to be. Never let yourself go. It’s easy to maintain a body but to get one back it is so hard. The first time I got fit was so much easier than this time because I was young. Now I just feel trapped in this cycle. I don’t know how I even had it in me to do it. I have to try keto because that’s what my body responds the best to. Lack of carbs. That’s when I lose the most weight if I just cut out carbs entirely. It really is the best diet for me. Under 30 carbs a day works so well for me. I don’t even need full Keto. Under 30 has always worked for me. There’s no science behind it, I didn’t read anything on it. I don’t even know where I came up with the number. But under 30 works great for me. If I can maintain it and not miss a day (that’s the hard part)

Mark mentioned that anyone who does a 3-5 day fast usually isn't exercising... I've done several 3 day fasts and ALWAYS continued my intense training and cardio.. even my endurance training... also he said that any time that you fast sooner than 14 hours isn't as beneficial... it actually depends on your body type... and it REALLY comes down to knowing your own body... I've been doing a 12-hour intermittent fasting for few weeks now... and I do intense and/or high volume Martial Arts training.. including extensive cardio... and I feel GREAT... and by now I am aware that I'm using fat as energy use... once again.. know your own body.. and find your own way😁... GREAT insight though😁
