@@l3joint when a person who is a thing wether it be a seal or a plumber says something like "we have guys like that" it kind of infers that he's talking about an outside entity. something other than what he is. maybe he's talking about seal team 6, I don't know.

Not that you’ll ever see this, but Marcus I want you to know how much I appreciate what you did. Being pulled from the team to “do more” couldn’t have been easy. And while I’m not the greatest with finding the best words, I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. I’ve gone through a lesser hell, but I was hit by a car in 2017 and had to learn to walk again. I wanted to give up but having read your story and listened to your speeches about drawing a line and crawling past it kept me going. It may not be what you wanted, but God wanted you to tell this story for a reason.

I'm pretty sure he was still active. What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that if something doesn't kill you or take a limb off of you, the contract isn't over. You sign up for 4 (example) years at a time. Just because you get blown up, doesn't mean shit to the big man. As long as you have all four limbs and can carry some weight, your contract isn't over until the four years is up, or you re-up.

If you dont die and you're not missing limbs, then its Charlie Mike. Only way I can explain it to ppl not in the military and not in direct combat roles, doing this job is like playing Russian roulette and hoping you dont crap out. You just keep going out the wire, keep going on raids, keep going on patrols. Every single time you're just spinning the chamber, some of us are just lucky and our brothers were not. Now that im out and I havs 2 little boys, I look at them as think how extremely lucky I was to make it through those deployments, being hit by IEDs, the fire fights the raids it only takes one bullet, one IED, now we must carry on for those who didn't make it back.

His reputation in the teams isnt the same as in public. Cause when you are responsible for the biggest fuck up in NSW history. And its pretty much fucking up basic level shit, and ignoring things told to you by the SMEs in the area. It kinda leaves a bad impression. Plus shooting another team guy in the chest in training doesnt exactly make you popular. One of the most telling things I heard during a Red Wings debrief from a Seal O was. "The good thing about Murphy being killed is we could give him the Medal of Honor instead of the court martial he deserved." Its the same thing as the Bravo Two Zero. They fucked up really bad also. But cool book and movie though. So Murphy should have had his bird pulled for shooting a guy. Didn't happen cause he was a officer. But that doesn't have much of a influence on the OP honestly. So lets start off they were told they weren't qualified to do the mission by Devgru SMEs. They decide to do it anyway. Can't really hold that against them to much. Aggresive personalities are going to take the mission. But they are told that 4 men is to small, 6 is minimum in the AO. They ignore it. They are told that communications are extremely difficult in the AO. Have sufficient back up comms and good no comms plans. They don't. They are told that the number one thing that will happen to them is they will have a soft compromise from locals and need to have a plan. They don't. They didn't even have any way to restrain them. Which is the worse part of this OP is Luttrel writes in his book they took a fucking vote in the field on something that should have been planned out well before the mission began. Then talks about possibly committing fucking war crimes in a best selling novel like its a regular fucking thing. Fucking madness here. Then one of the biggest Seal strengths is the fucking love of beltfeds and they don't bring one. Then to cap it off the insertion bird cuts the ropes which should have been a immediate cancellation of the op. And then they brought a unsanitized laptop in the field. Every SOF group has had serious fuck ups. It happens. But at least the guys involved don't write best selling novels acting like they weren't the massive fuck ups they were. Google "Marcus Luttrell Lone Survivor Lied" There's a former military officer talking about the video of their ambush/bodies (which yes is still on the internet, no I won't link it). In it he discusses that it seems most likely they were killed instantly, speculates on some mistakes, and then the video itself shows the unsanitized laptop. Edit: Here's the link from SOFREP: sofrep.com/55995/lone-survivor-uncovered-the-ambush-at-sawtalo-sar/ Newsweek: www.newsweek.com/2016/06/10/mohammad-gulab-marcus-luttrell-navy-seal-lone-survivor-operation-red-wings-458139.html For those interested, here is the video of the ambush and the Taliban going through their stuff, including the laptop. archive.org/details/Konr3mlia

Gulf war was the oil war. War on terror was completely different shit. Michael Moore said that shit about the Gulf war and you idiots keep applying it to just anything in the middle east as a catch all and you lot don't even get that right. The US is allies with Saudi Arabia which controls like 90% of the middle east valuable oil, we don't need to invade anyone in the middle east to ''steal it''. The opposite was true, we tried to stop other middle eastern countries namely Iraq during the gulf war from stealing it from the Saudi's and by proxy us. So shut the fuck up with this oil bullshit. Who the fuck would invade Afghanistan (A mountainous country) for oil? Wouldnt it be Diamonds or Heroin? @Lucifer whatever happened in the movie and book simply did not happen. Marcus did not get shot a bunch of times he was only shot one time by the ass cheek. They didn’t kill no taliban soldiers, there was only about 10 to 8 taliban soldiers. Marcus ran and hid from his fellow soldiers why they were getting ambushed. Marcus didn’t even fire one single bullet. The guy who saved his life Gulab claimed in his own book that Marcus Had 11 Full magazines and his weapon still with him. By no any means I’m calling this guy a coward but, he simply isn’t the hero that was portrayed in the movie. He simply hid and ran. Search up on KZbin “Operation Red Wings Ambush Footage” .it’s literally the movie but in real life recorded by the taliban. Only 8 taliban were present. You can also hear the 3 navy seals including Marcus screaming in the background.

The biggest problem I'm finding after reading ALL of the comments here is...the lack of punctuation. Misinformation, is a convoluted story in the simplest form! If there were more punctuation in these comments, it would be so much easier to understand the key point of each post. A lot of confusion, involved in the premise of each of these posts, is brought forth by the "lost in translation" factor that occurs in many of the heated replies. This, leads many to post a "knee-jerk" or often called, "shitting on" reply to the story, the protagonist, or both. That not only angers people, but also creates much confusion about what really did, or didn't happen in story! All that aside, this was a great podcast. Thanks Joe, for what you do, and much respect to Marcus Luttrell for being, what and who, you really are! I salute you both and...thank you Marcus, for your service!!

My brother had really bad mental health for 23 years. I remember seeing same stress and strain from the PTSD in Matt's eyes in interviews around the time the book came out. I'm glad he's on the other side of that. Might have taken an L on that deployment but the guy is a legend for getting back up and not crawling into a bottle or putting a gun in his mouth like so many others would have. God bless.

It’s funny that Marcus says he’ll only drink whiskey with his friends because of the things that end up coming out when he does drink it. That makes sense to me , yeah. It’s a good and sound principal. But the thing is, he’s sitting there with only Joe and Jamie, but millions of people will get to hear the stories that come out after drinking that whiskey… LOL Anyways, my first impression of this guy is that he is really cool and respectable in my opinion. Good content. Thumbs up 👍
