This is a video of the ford escape with the 3.0 v6 tune up service. this one in specific is a 2005 fwd model but the engine tune up procedure is the same for all the v6. this one is a c.o.p. (coil on plug) which do not need to be replaced unless faulty if your model has wires than you should replace them in this service

Thanks! You saved me $340 for a shop to do it. I've done a tune up before but never on this setup, and thought this was above my skill level. Thanks to you this was way too easy! Much appreciated!

OMG! Until watching your fantastic video here, I had NO IDEA how many steps were involved in changing my sparkplugs. Holy cow! I am an old timer used to "just getting it done." No more. I think you are a an incredibly good mechanic and instructor here. I was going to do this right away, but now think I'll wait. But when I do, this video will be my instruction. Stunned at how cars have changed. Thanks so much for posting this, my friend!

You really helped me out I’ve used this twice one for plugs and plugs and coils today. However one of my throttle body bolts broke so that’s another issue. If y’all haven’t yet I’d recommend doing the PCV valve while the intake is off, needs done at 100,000 and is a pain to get to with the intake on.

I worked on peoples cars for years back in the day. Carburetors, coil, distributor, plugs. Old V-8's, 6 and 4 cylinders. Did everything from tune-ups to engine swaps. Worked out of my garage at my house. Had to stop around 1990 or so. So basically a 30 year break. Last year I bought a 2005 Ford 500 Limited in mint condition. Meticulously maintained. When I opened the hood I didn't even know what I was looking at. The 3.0L DOHC Duratec Engine had me totally intimidated. I had NO IDEA. But I told myself "it's an engine. Just different". I watched more videos than I could count on how these engines operate and why. After a couple months it all began to fall into place. The CPU and all the sensors. The airflow systems. Throttle, Fuel delivery, exhaust. Everything. And THEY ARE very different. The days of doing a tune-up sitting on the wheel well are GONE. But if you had the knowledge to work on the old school engines you can work on these too. Trust me. I'm doing all of my own work now. Because of KZbin videos like this. They cut my learning curve WAY DOWN. A scan tool is a must for these cars to narrow down a problem but they are pretty cheap now. Just go for it. Pretty soon it'll be second nature to you just like the old days. The money you'll save will make it worth while, especially if you loved working on engines in the past. These videos are priceless man. THANKS FOR DOING THIS!!

Thank you so much, Joe! About 8 years ago I opened my Haynes guide and flipped when I saw what had to be done to get to the back plugs. I sent it to the shop and came out with a $380 repair bill. I decided to do it myself this time after seeing all the great responses to your video. My 2002 Mazda Tribute has a few differences, but I was able to easily spot them and adjust accordingly. While following along to your video on my tablet, I also snapped a photo of each thing I removed, since there were a few differences. After about 1-1/2 hours of removal, it only took about 15 mins to put everything back by quickly flipping backward through my photos. THANK YOU!!!!

Thanks so much for posting this video. My mechanic wanted 3-1/2 hours labor plus parts totaling well over $400. I was able to do it in around 3 hours saving around $360. And actually, after watching your video a couple times, the job went remarkably well with no surprises. Thank you again and take care.

Thank you so much Joe!! This is such a helpful video, it really shows you the step by step process of exchanging your spark plugs. At first it looked so overwhelming, but this video gives clear instructions on what to do. I was thankful my husband helped me with the process, because some bolts and spark plugs do require a good amount of strength to unscrew. Anyway, thanks so much!!

Just want to thank Joe for his video. Got a P0302 Cylinder two misfire. Of course 2 is under the intake in the back. Went to a garage guy said minimum 3 hours at 85 an hour. Then I found Joes video. After watching it a few times I thought this can’t be too difficult. Took me about an 1 hour to get it apart. I put new plugs in but didn’t change the coil. Another hour to put it back together. BIG MISTAKE. Code came back so I did it all again this time in less than hour total and yes I replaced the coil which yes got rid of the code. BIG THANKS to Joe he made it all look so EASY!!! And saving me $$$$$

Great video Joe. You do make it look easy for sure. I'm just a nobody but I have removed my airbox many times since 05. It seemed easier for me to remove the MAF sensor hose first, then the airbox. It's easier to just bend the hose rather than have to pry the entire airbox. I've done it both ways and I've changed about 25 or so over the last 12 years. Great video!! MAF

"pretty straightforward" is in the eye of the beholder! I changed the plugs on my Mazda without much trouble after watching a KZbin video, but I think I'll be bringing the Ford Escape to the shop. Good video for those ambitious enough to tackle it though.

Good technical video as to steps to be done. My only problem is a did not see you use a torque wrench once during the process. An aluminum engine and heads with plastic intake, brass inserts and neoprene gaskets leak to air leaks,strippd bolts and warped parts if not torqued properly. Been a mechanic and teacher for over 60 years going from a simple test light to having a hand held diagnostic computer in my hand I can tell you nothing beats a good torque wrench to keep a vehicle running after putting it back together. Like I said great video. You know your stuff. We need more young mechanics.Just sometimes you have to put away the power tools and use your hands to get the feel of the parts.

@donaldspontarelli5003
@donaldspontarelli5003 2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree you have to torque plugs to exact specs. I've never used a torque wrench for plugs on any off my cars with either cast or aluminum heads. For most men, using a standard 3/8' socket wrench, tighten the plug to the point just before you have to put your weight into it and that's going to be a little more than 11 lbs torque however if you are a heavy weight lifter or a couch potato, then you should definitely use a torque wrench. With most plugs though, a little more torque is better than less unless you have a Ford Tritan V8 with the short bored plug wells that resulted in allot of spark plug blowouts.

Thanks for the video. This was the third one I watched and this was by far the best. The others were like, "disconnect all of this stuff" then through the magic of Hollywood, it was all disconnected. For someone that doesn't know, showing me how to disconnect and then reconnect is quite important. I am afraid, however that this is just too complicated for me.

Great idea leaving the coolant lines on the Throttle body. I gotta do this job as soon as it gets warmer. Man I miss my garage. Great video. I'll be referring to it for sure. Probably a good idea to change the valve cover gaskets to while your this far in. The 3 plug well gaskets have a tendency to leak as they get old. Wells get oil in them and foul plugs and ruin Coil Packs. I'd even check the injectors too at this point and clean them. I'd knock out everything I could this far in. Would hate to take the intake off again any time soon. Awesome job. Thanks man. New sub.

I need ti to this on my 2001 because cylinders 2 and 3 are misfiring. Should I just replace all 6 spark plugs, coils and wires or just the 2 that are misfiring? A garage told me just replace them as they go bad. But that's just gonna cost more in labor if I have a shop do it or more nice days for me to do it. Should I add an EGR valve to the parts list?

good work man, doubt you'll see this since the post is older. The only thing I take issue with is the fact that you did't blow it all down first and also clean the oil out of the upper intake once it was all apart. I'm sure that caked on oil from the pcv works it's way down and bakes onto the valves and guides. I'm just obsessive about preventative things like that. "do it nice or do it twice" lol either way hope all is well on your end :)

Hi, that small plastic cover on the accelerator and cc cables, do you know if that was the solution for that issue about the cruise control problem?, I meant that one in which the cruise control cable gets stuck under the engine cover. I have read some stuffs about that, but not know what was the solution from ford dealers, I buyed a ford escape 2002 six month ago, it has a big engine cover.

Joe my 2003 ford escape xlt has the oil pressure warning on. I checked the oil and it's just about level. Is it a problem with the sending unit, the type of oil etc...? Please help.
@JoeTheAutoGuy
@JoeTheAutoGuy 10 жыл бұрын
could be a sending unit , I would get the oil pressure manually checked to be safe, most times if you have no other issues with it running I'd say sending unit

I have a 2005 Ford 500 Limited with the 3.0L Duratec DOHC. It has the Electronic Throttle Body. That's the only difference I see. Definitely didn't want to take off those coolant hoses. Would the process be the same? I'm getting a misfire I think. Runs a little rough in drive at a stop but smooths out if I put it in park or neutral. Also getting a shake around 45 - 50 mph. I cleaned the MAF with CRC and changed the air filter. Still doing it. I checked the front 3 coil on plugs and they were firing. Haven't checked the injectors yet or the plugs though. Any ideas would be very appreciated. Check engine light is on. I've got a scanner on the way but just wondering what you think. THANKS!!

sorry for late reply did you retrieve any codes ?
@RickyPisano
@RickyPisano 3 жыл бұрын
@@JoeTheAutoGuy That's OK. I appreciate the reply regardless. Initially I pulled a P0171, bank 1 to lean. Looked for vacuum leaks and couldn't find any. The car was running fine so I cleared the code. Then a couple weeks later I pulled a P0354 and 56, Ignition coil D and F primary/secondary circuit. Front bank so I was happy. Pulled the coil packs and there was oil (not much though, not even touching the coil) in the well for "D" and "E". "F" was dry. Figured valve cover gasket leak. Tightened down the cover just a bit hoping it would stop the leak and it did. Replaced the plugs and was running great again. Then a couple weeks later I pulled a P0303 Cylinder 3 misfire. This car was meticulously maintained. Never missed an oil change and all PM was done on schedule. I'm thinking at this point that I either have a bad coil on Cylinder 3, Bank 1 (of course) or an injector problem. I live in Tennessee now but used to work on cars all the time back in the day. Late '80s early '90's. Raced the NASCAR Street Stock Division in the Northeast and practically lived in my garage. I lost that due to a divorce and didn't open a hood for over 2 decades. I bought this 2005 Ford 500 Limited with the 3.0L Duratec DOHC V-6. When I opened the hood I didn't even know what I was looking at. I was used to the old V-8s, Straight/Slant 6's and 4 bangers. Carburetors, distributors, points... you get the point. Anyway, I told myself it was still an engine and I used to rip them apart and put them back together. Swap engines. Everything. So I started watching videos like yours, and I get it now. All sensors and ECM controlled. No biggie. Bottom line, I'm pretty sure I need to pull the Plenum, and both valve covers. Change all the gaskets, check the injectors, change the plugs, and all the circuits for the power, signal and ground wires on everything. I wouldn't even bother with a 16 year old car normally but this car is like new. Interior, body, electronics, tires, everything. Incredible condition for its age. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. I have a car port but no garage and it's freezing out now. I'm only driving to the store and a few miles at a time hoping I can wait until it gets warmer to do the job. The misfire is sporadic and my fuel mileage has dropped but not shaking on the short trips I'm limiting it to. Just trying to bide my time.

Hey I see your answering questions here pretty regularly. I was wondering about something that may or may not have something to do with my spark plugs on my 2003 Escape. So we had a bad snowstorm a few weeks back I was in 4WD a bit leaving the house. After everything got back to normal my car started acting funny. Currently it has issues picking up speed beyond 40mph and the engine revs way too much, going uphill is a nightmare. Also my gas consumption shot through the roof. I'm stuck with 3 options. My brother proposed I'm stuck in 4WD but I've done almost everything to ensure I'm not. My buddy assumes bad spark plugs, which is what I'm hoping for, and my personal worst fear, for obvious reasons is transmission failure. Thoughts? Two more things I thought to add, when I first started it when these problems occurred my car idled very violently, this went away relatively quickly, and something that happened two times and only after I put gas in. During the acceleration from a stop, I heard a very high pitched squealing sound.

godzillab10 Sounds to me like its a bad ignition coil. I too have a 2003 Ford Escape which had the very same problem. I unfortunately didn't fix it soon enough I melted the catalytic converter. You could try a diagnostic code reader and see if it tells you more info. I used one and it told me that I had failed ignition #5. Coil 4, 5, and 6 are the ones in the front, they are easy to get too. Unfortunately 1,2 and 3 are not. But Joe the Auto Guy does a good job on showing us how to replace them. Hope this helps a little. Good Luck

godzillab10 do you have any check engine lights on. any codes could greatly help out. the power transfer units on these cars can cause issues as well as the rear diff housings. i have actually removed the drive shaft from the power transfer unit and rear diff to see if i freed up engine power. but its a rare case. the engines have coil issues . if you lose a cylinder you will have very little power and horrible gas mileage. and as KcarllraCK mentioned it can take out the catalytic converter which will give you more issues as in no power and in some cases a no start if it clogs completely
