This modifier probably existed since the beginning of Blender and about now I'm seeing how useful it is.
@C_Corpze3 жыл бұрын
@Darkstar sculpting results in very messy geometry, I actually like to keep it all clean and simple which skin modifier is better for. Sculpting actually takes more effort as you have to manually remesh and lower detail on certain parts of the mesh. Skin modifier works very well if you need a good and optimized base, it actually took me way less effort than when I used sculpting and looked much cleaner, just subdivide when you're done and it looks good.
@Kavriel3 жыл бұрын
@@C_Corpze From what i'm seeing, and what i understand from blender so far, classical editing is good for hard surface models, sculpting is great at adding details and making organic things, and this method is efficient in producing various basic shapes. Things might not be that clear-cut, but I'm thinking each mode has its uses.
@boitahaki3 жыл бұрын
@Darkstar lol that process you described takes much longer and the result will be a total mess in the topology.
@boitahaki3 жыл бұрын
@@C_Corpze To be honest the more experienced I get, the more sculpting seems like a waste of time. In the end you can't even use the high poly mesh anyway and you need to do the topology for the entire model... so what's the point?
@boitahaki3 жыл бұрын
@@Kavriel If you are working on a game, sculpting to me seems useful for baking textures, but in that case you need to start with a simple model first, then create a high poly one that is already with UV map. If you just want to render a nice model, sculpting also seems great. But for games, animations, etc. you will always have to use a low poly model in the end.
@SkeleTonHammer3 жыл бұрын
Even if the results aren't exactly what you want (if you're trying to make a solid production asset, it won't be anyways) this technique works great to create a base model that you can refine and detail in sculpt mode or retopo by hand. It helps tremendously to break through that initial blockage in character creation where you go "uh, okay, how do I even start?"

wow...I have been trying to find a nice workflow to quickly create characters, messing with metaballs etc. I even tried this skin modifier method, but I didn't like it because I thought you could only scale through ctrl + a, not knowing you could scale each axis independently. This IS my go-to workflow now, many many thanks!

I’m just now getting into 3D modeling simply because my 7 year old is in love creating his own games and such and I upgraded him from some basic 3D programs into this in order to animate. This helped with the most basic things to show him. Even when I got confused he’d get excited and start yelling how to do something. 😂 so he was following along too

"Make Characters Fast" This was my first thought when I found out about proportional editing. That plus Subdivision modifier was like casual sculpting for beginners, like me. But this method is actually really awesome. Once formed simply apply everything and then you can model as usual in the editing mode. Also I tried and you MUST add skin modifier before subdivision or it really messes up. It's not a perfect model technique of course, but it's a perfect base to start from for the basic idea, then move to the details.
