With a blend of three guitar tones per side (low gain, high gain and mid gain), this Jason Richardson song presents some pretty tricky metal guitar mixing challenges-- here's how Taylor tackles them!
The session is Jason Richardson's "Fragments," ft Luke Holland, Mark Holcomb and Lukas Magyar.
Get the Jason Richardson multi-tracks and Taylor Larson's full mixing session ► goo.gl/MXcJrj
NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, The Black Dahlia Murder, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Chelsea Grin, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, Meshuggah and Bring Me The Horizon - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

The compressor settings are essentially transient shaping, so taking the wave from being a bit of a sausage, to adding a slight volume peak at the start of the sound. from this ====== to this ^====== Makes a difference, think how drums start really loud and drop quickly in volume.

I still remember this video. He didn't mixed anything he just showed the different plugins that he used to get the sound of the mix. Very very informative but no hands on mixing.

Are each guitar track(high, med, and lo gain) a different take? Or do you just track a left and right, then duplicate for low and med gain? Thanks!

I'm confused by the tip at 1:18... shouldn't the daw automatically compensate for the delays added by any single plugin by default? I don't see the point of cloning the same eq if bypassed...
@BigFatCock0
@BigFatCock0 8 жыл бұрын
I could understand if it wasn't bypassed since the delay compensation doesn't always work but still weird.
@eyalleviurm
@eyalleviurm 8 жыл бұрын
Delay Compensation in ProTools is notoriously buggy and different plugins still have their own internal latencies that Delay Compensation doesn't fix. He did the right thing.

Eyal Levi thanks for the info man, I know Pro Tools can be a world on its own sometimes. is this something worth doing with every plugin whenever the phase relationship is crucial?
@eyalleviurm
@eyalleviurm 8 жыл бұрын
Just FYI, you will find issues with internal plugin latencies in any DAW. This is something to always listen for. It's just compounded in Pro Tools because the Delay Comp has a mind of it's own.

Eyal Levi I usually shy away from adding effects on channels with extremely correlated signals, now I know I have to be even more careful with that, thanks.

whats the name of that EQ plugin? it only says the company. also Tone Forge is Running on a bus? so the incoming signal is dry? how exactly does this work? im on logic pro x so i usually put all of my Guitar effects including tone forge or BIAS on the regular channel strip. is it better to run it through a bus?

that's not the main purpose of that EQ. It's just a preset that they made in 2012 for P2, the main purpose is the 4k dip and the 2k boost.

So when you're recording you layer different levels of gain for each channel of guitars (which are panned left and right for each layer.) And does that help the guitars tighten up? And in what way does that benefit the mix?
@gavindahl4322
@gavindahl4322 8 жыл бұрын
Carlos Asuncion makes sense, Thanks for the input!! I'll definitely be using that... one more thing are there or is the certain levels they should be set at to provide the most clarity? Or you just mix and fix it in the mastering faze?

he hates guitars. LOL?? in fact, he hates his sound setup, his devices. something is corrupting his audio chain. nowadays every PC or laptop can corrupt audio chain and make sound hollow and fizzy. he never realizes how blind he is, until he listens to clear sound. then he will FEEL the guitar rather then listen to the hollow sound image of it.

I'm not going to say anything about the mixing but... I can't help but to feel that this kind of metal is so sterile and machinatic, it's like listening to a computer. Why don't you just program a computer to do those chugs? You can't make it sound that way live anyway. I guess not many people will agree with me.
