I'm still waiting for the delivery and production of:

2022 Fane Ascension F25
I will include them in a video ASAP

It's a bummer how Lazy Johan is slacking off with the vids after all these years. Not! The guy is just _incredible._ Truly a Tone Master who goes further than nearly anyone _ever_ to bring us the very highest quality video content when it comes to vintage guitar tone. I hope everyone really appreciates how hard he works doing all this.

Quite the undertaking! Appreciate you doing this, really interesting. Having the 68 clip play before each contender clip is essential for really hearing the differences 1 to 1, so thank you for doing that for most of the video.

And as far as my thoughts, unfortunately none of them were very close. The single down strums section about half way through really showed that well, all of them had the top middle bottom or some combination totally off. That's not to say they sounded bad, but definitely different. Based of this I'd probably just lean the celestion reissue.

I'm a little late to this video. Thank you for your time. Since you put in the time and effort to make this, I took the time to listen closely and score them throughout the riffs. They received 0, .5, or 1 point for each riff depending on the similarity. 01 - Supro 02 - Warehouse T3 - '15 g12m25 T3 - '79 g12-65 T3 - '82 g12-65 04 - '22 g12m25 05 - Mojotone 06 - EVH 07 - Jensen 08 - Weber 09 - Scumback PVC 10 - Legend 11 - Scumback M75 12 - Private Jack I was very impressed with the Supro and Warehouse. I know it's all subjective. Regardless, this is what my ears felt was most similar. Thanks again!

These videos keep getting more and more informative. I like the mix between a scientific and arm-chair approach, combined with the sheer nuttiness of equipment available. Definitely looking forward to next years followup: every single Marshall JTM45 still in existence compared. All kidding aside, I think that I have learned as much, and I'm pretty sure more, about vintage amps and tone from watching these videos over the past few years as I did playing a lot of this stuff over the past 35.

Secondly, I love my Scumback 1265 clones, 4x12, but can’t bring myself to get rid of my Celestion G12M25 loaded 4x12. They have a very rich tone with a beautiful top end, especially with the plexi.😊

Yes! Fantastic shootout. Thanks a million! I was surprised by how much I liked the 2015 and 22 Celestion reissues. The green beret wasn't a surprise as WGS are my favorite modern speakers. The Veteran 30 being my absolute favorite speaker doing a similar comparison with about 20 speakers, a 4x12 with a 1987x and a magnatone 2x12 semi open. Venteran 30 is my sound! Their British Invasion is not bad at all either! But again wonderful wonderful contribution to the community! :) G

Herculean effort Johan! No one comes close to your speaker tests. The 68, for me anyway, overshadows all the rest. There's just that much of a difference. I also like the 82 G12-65 a lot as well. It would be interesting to hear the rest after being pummeled for 20+ years.

Scumback don't seem to sound as singular with so many other clones or derivatives having come out over the last 20 years. I agree...I thought the WGS Green Beret was more similar than I'd expected, too.

Wow. Great episode, Johan! After watching, and reading many comments, I have concluded that the sound is in the ear of the listener. Most agree that the '68 sounds the sweetest, but after that, we all have a wide variety of opinions on which sounds "closest" to the '68. Very Interesting.

My favorite take on a GB is a WGS Invader which didn't get included ... another great is the G12M-65 Creamback! Regular Greenbacks come across a bit harsh and bright unless your really cranking them hard. The invader has all the good greenback qualities minus the harsh highs.

It would be nice to see 1 final G12M greenback video. Comparing the Celestion heritage G12-65 to the original vintage one. Also the Creamback G12M with more high power versions of these same speakers from Scumback M75/M75 PVC 65 watt , Warehouse Invader G12M, standard Weber greenbacks, etc. Maybe you can record the great Celestion G12C greenback and place it with the other Celestion greenbacks. Johan you definitely deserve a medal!!!

Only saw one comment mentioning the Private Jack. While it isn't a direct clone, or really designed to be one, it is a great speaker. Perfect EQ for a British style speaker. A/B compared to the 68, it definitely lacks that top end airy-ness (some call harshness). The Jack certainly is bright, but not harsh, in a room/mic'd. I have one in a 2x12 with a Cannabis Rex and it mics great and the speaker combo really makes a huge sound. I wouldn't mind trying another Brit style speaker with the Jack, as I seem to prefer it over most "American" style speakers. Kinda want to try a Warehouse or real Celestion some time.

FWIW, since I have or had a few of these: I had Emi PJ paired with a G12M-65 in a closed back Bluesbreaker (big!) cab - was my favorite for years. Have several RI GB's in various pairings such as a 4X12 with V-30's bottom and GB's top (Friedman loads some this way). Really like my WGS Reapers and Retro30's. Have a 212 closed back combo amp with a J-75 Scumback and V-30 - REALLY like that one. And for all out premium boutique, Celestion-recommended pairing, I have another 412 with a Blue and a G12H-30 70th on one side, and a Heritage GB with a Heritage G12H-30 55Hz on the other side. For a 112 cab, I like a closed back with a G12K-100 or an open back with a Cream 90. I keep the 412's because whaddya gonna do? Can't move 'em, can't sell 'em/ship 'em, they aren't practical anywhere, but I've had 'em for decades, love the sound even at low volume. But a 112 loaded as above is plenty. For compact, the Mesa Boogie V-30 loaded mini-Rec slant is an incredible sounding small box. I used to hate V-30's but now they are a staple for pairing. I break them in a LONG time and maybe my hearings is going but they don't seem as harsh as they did 20 years ago. They pair well with GB's too.

Wow, what a monstrous project, Johan! Hats off, that must have taken a ton of work, changing the speakers, playing and editing. I can't imagine where you found so much time having a full time job and it makes me think your wife must be pretty jealous of those speakers 😁 Jokes aside I really appreciate the back to back editing with different mics in the end! There seems to be hope as quite many of the demoed speakers seem to be in the ballpark. The '68 Pulsonic GB still rules, but I was surprised how close the 8 ohm reissue and the G12-65 were, wasn't expecting that. I liked the Mojotone, EVH, Warehouse, Weber, Supro and the PVC Scumback, every one has its own flavour. On the other hand the Jensen and Eminence (especially the Legend) seemed quite off IMO. If I had to pick just one, I'd probably take the 2015 Greenback. Rock on, Johan 🤘

Thank you Mr.Segeborn. While maybe not true to the Greenback, I'm really digging that EVH model, I definitely need to keep an eye out for one. Awesome vid! The original sounds fuller and clearer than any of the pretenders, but most of these speakers performed really well. Who knows how good they'll sound in 50 years? The most convincing were the 2015 reissue, the EVH, the Weber, the Supro, the Mojotone, and the 16 ohm G12-65. Aside from a few misses (the Private Jack, the Jensen Mod, and maybe the first of the two Scumbacks), nearly everything sounded about ready to go into a Greenback-craving amp. I suppose the biggest surprise to me was the Weber, which sounded more like the 68 Greenback than most.

First off, what a GREAT video Johan! From the edit to the timestamps, this must have been A LOT of work. Thank you! For the comparison, the obvious take is that no other speaker has the magic of the Pulsonic Greenback. No news there. But to my ears both Celestion Reissues did a great job and were the closest sounding ones of the lot, with the Green Beret up there too. (I'd wager they share the same cones as the reissues as they sound virtually the same to me!) All the rest IMO are far from the original -even though some sound great on their own ('79 G12-65!) The Mojotone and the GB128 that I previously thought were good competitors were not as close sounding to me this time, or perhaps the Celestion reissues took their place. I was pleasantly surprised.

It's forever astonishing to me that with plenty of old speakers to reverse engineer, no one has come up with anything that sounds like that original Greenback. Really appreciate all your tone chasing, Johan. I've got stacks of speakers from my many years of trial and error testing. In the end, my experience is that what we hear coming out of a cabinet in a room is usually not what the speaker sounds like when it is properly miked up...I've put one speaker in 4 different cabinets, and in an ambient situation, it sounded different all 4 times. Recording the speaker was a different story. When mic'd for recording, it sounded the same, no matter what cabinet it was in. Simple adjustments to the microphone placement made dialing in a good tone easy. Close proximity mics take the cabinet out of the equation, and let us find a sweet spot on the speaker. I guess my point is, a speaker that sounds great when set up for recording may not sound as good through just a cabinet during rehearsal, or at low volume during practice. Your demonstration here is excellent, because it gives the true flavor of the speaker in its essence. For the end user, however, it may sound different if they are not recording or putting mic's in front of the cab. All of this to say - "the '68 Celestion is the best!" Clearly. Excellent demo.

Yes! I've been thinking lately that the Pulsonic formula was lost in the factory fire. But what about the engineers that invented it? They were probably still around and breathing. Why didn't they try to bring it back from memory? I'm sure that coming up with that pulp for the Pulsonic formula would have been a lot of attempts until they were happy and settled on a result. Why didn't they try to reverse engineer it at that very moment?

Back to the tone search again. I love everything about vintage tones. I bought 2 Mojotone BV-25 to try out because they do sound the closest to the pre rola greenback. I have had a few Celestion's. I had a set of 4 6402 cone G12M 25 reissues. I know that you can't run a powerful Marshall and put the vintage 68 greenback in danger. But for the next one Johan maybe you can use a 70's Marshall head with a master volume? Or run the speakers in pairs to handle the power. I can't wait for more shootouts of GB's. I want to hear all the G12H30 types. Again thanks for this Johan!

Very nice work. The 65's are the closest in my opinion because they aren't coloring the sound so much and every other speaker has a really nasty resonant peak that you can't seem to shake off. There's a definite mid scoop in the original Greenback but it doesn't sound empty because it has nice high mids and treble. I don't think they ever got it right with the reissue either.
