what were they? i had the one with 'stray'
@davebartholome29246 жыл бұрын
Mike, they were "Arcade," "Abercrombie Quartet," and "M". ("Stray" is on "Abercrombie Quartet.") In 2016, ECM reissued all three of them in a 3-CD set called "The First Quartet" (to distinguish it from the music of his second--and last--quartet). It's beautifully remastered and reasonably priced.

Yeah, I agree with Tom and Leslie below. Outstanding combo. I was lucky enough to see them back in '80. I'm grateful to have these videos to add to my collection. It seems a shame they only made 3 records together....

Why is this listed as Comedy? Well, John was one of the funniest guys I ever met, but seriously, this is just wonderful music from "when they were young". This group was genius in chemistry, each person contributed so much to the thoroughly unique direction they created. Strange to think the makeup of this band was the same as Pat Metheny's group, yet John's quartet always managed to be magically transcendent and elusive to the mainstream public's eye. Their entire output was a high point in the jazz timeline. So great to see this live footage!

"Comedy" is youtube default category for posting and I don't bother to change that. The music is all that matters. Take care

What a marvelous quartet-it's a pity there are not so many recordings of this fine group. They are all terrific players but I particularly like the awesome George Mraz.

Just thought I'd mention that this is "Foolish Dog," released on the middle record, originally titled _Abercrombie Quartet_. Thanks for posting!

When I studied briefly with John when he was living in San Francisco in the mid '80's he gave me this song, written out. The title was smudged. For years I thought it was "Foolish Door." I got attached to that title and actually like it better! :-) But yes, the real title is "Foolish Dog." It's a beautiful song. RIP John and George.

Eu não vi este, Mnose ! Estava em Roterdão a tocar no B 14 Jazz Club, na época... Mas sorry por estar a ser... nosy, my friend Mnose. Ahn?? Como é qu'esta me saíu? Vi este quartet no Northsea Jazz Festival (Praia de Scheiveningen, Den Haag (Haia), Nederlands, em 1982, e depois same guys but with a saxophone of your preference, Mnose: David Liebman (oh no! another jew! eheheh. Pelo menos não é da família Iceberg...under...stand? -de partituras ou de expo, ou automóvel...?? ;D That's enough... with "stand-up comedy, ou melhor, sit-down no-fun-at-all ! E desculpa any 'statement' fora de contexto.

Ritchie Beirach...one of my favorite ECM Pianist, although he and ECM Honcho, Manfred Eicher did not vibe well together. Too bad. Beirach is an Outstanding Pianist, and much more adventurous and deep than some of the Nordic players on ECM.
