What has always stunned me about Barry's scores is how it almost stops sounding like an orchestra. Space March is such a dynamic, haunting piece. All the instruments are layered in a way that both obscures & melds them. It's extraordinary. You can still pick out instruments but there's so many delicate layers where the tape distortion & reverb fight that you just end up mesmerized by it. I also think that the director/producer team of Cubby & Harry pushed Barry beyond his limits more often than not! They wouldn't shy away from rejecting material if they didn't think it was good enough! Which they did with YOLT. But Barry often commented that he used to like having a "Big Cheese" & that "at least you know where you stand". He used to rise to the challenge & come back with a masterpiece like this! The film industry now is so petrified into making anything original, different, slower paced, or simplified. They get so caught up in fads, trends, & cgi status that the music, atmosphere, & dialog just get lost. It's really sad but I can accept it quite easily - seeing how badly we've fucked everything else up! lol

Fantastic now as the scores and incidental music were the first time round. I was hooked on JB from the aged of 8, John Barry was and is the cherry on the cake. Number One musical hero with Bernard Herrman second.

A lot of critics have dismissed the new James Bonds as resembling the Bourne trilogy too much. I love both franchises and i do see the similarities between Daniel Craig's Bond and Damon's Bourne.....ie fight scenes, camera work etc. I think one of the things that made the classic Bond films so good was their elaborately produced music, such as this piece. Bond could reclaim some individuality if it were to bring back full-blown orchestra sets for it's soundtrack.
@GuineaPigEveryday4 жыл бұрын
100%. I think Craig's films, especially the third one, have moved away from Bourne a bit (i rlly dont like Bourne that much in terms of action) and given us larger action set pieces and more of the majestic action filming style of Bond.
@Cybopath3 жыл бұрын
Issue I had was they turned Bond into a generic action hero. Zero wit, charm, humour just another punchy punchy, sweaty man. He comes across more like a Doorman for a London night club than a sophisticated ex-Naval officer.
@arstropica2 жыл бұрын
@@Cybopath Agreed. The ambition present in this score is seriously lacking in the new franchise. Oh well, I guess you can't stay on-a-top forever!

These two movements are likely the most dynamic and impactful pieces Mr. Barry created for the Bond movies. "Capsule in Space" had the theater on the edge of its seats, though they already knew dreaded outcome of the scene; then this incredibly hard-driving masterpiece escorted the planes into Fort Knox, as a threat mounted over our Nation. On that night, I was amazed at and mesmerized by what was unfolding, until an older lady some 4-5 seats over clutched her husband's arm, and blurted out "Ohhhh God" and buried her head, as the soldiers dropped like flies. For maybe 1.5 seconds, angst overcame hundreds of watchers, who didn't CARE that it was only a movie ..... precisely what Mssrs. Saltzman, Broccoli, and Barry wanted .....

Jonh Barry, the master of underwater and space themes. Loved space march since i was a kid. very nice chord progression. thx for uploading another version of it, i only knew the O.S.T. version...unfortunetaly the timing (drum) around 4:00-4:20 is a little screwed. But your mix isnt that "badly done" at all...

John Barry's space scores (Bond OSTs + The Black Hole) are so peculiar because they depict space as this romantic but deadly place. Most composers either romanticize the space or depict it as a horrible place to be, only John Barry threads that narrow pathway of depicting both beauty and danger of space at the same time.

I agree that the earlier Bond films were better. The winning formula is a combination of action packed and hypnotic awe inspiring musical scores, such as the Space March. Bond must be able to show he is ruthless and tough - a job that Daniel Craig does very well, credit to him. The other secret to their success is subtle clever humour which is missing from modern Bond films, it made the difference. As suggested to me, the Bond films should have stopped when they were at their best.

excellent score and I think the mixing is not bad at all: it could be almost a classic suite with tree parts. the first two are connected by the same key & harmonies; the third is the dramatic climax (and btw the key and a specific fragment remind of the "Goldfinger" theme :) )

This brings to mind the "Dawn Raid" visual, where our soldiers were collapsing under the gas ... to see it now is amusing. But I do happen to remember when I saw Goldfinger at the theater, with a packed house on the film's opening night. When this incredible John Barry piece was playing out, the planes flying overhead, and our guys dropping like flies, there was a loud gasp, then a complete silence in the theater, then someone said "NO !!!" in disbelief. Now THAT is film making, kids !
