It's Barry doing his beautiful trick of slow burn majesty. It's a slow key swing that presents itself as the harpsichord/piano strikes it's us-fussed and un-busy theme whilst the flutes respond in part. It's so uncluttered and so undemanding, yet so atmosheric and unyielding in its draw to the ear. Just another piece of work that this great man did that surely measures him as the finest British TV & Film score composer of the 20th Century. John Barry, what a class act.

Recognize strains of 007 in Barry's composition? Only to a degree and on purpose. Barry recognized that the character of Palmer wasn't a glamorous double O but rather a British civil servant called upon to do the dirty jobs HMSS would never admit to. The Barry connection was no accident to Bond. Harry Saltzman and Cubby Broccoli were also the producers of the Palmer series as well as the Bond franchise. Outstanding music, superb suspense and the mystique of England in the 60's.
