In 2015 House Speaker and 13-term Republican Congressman John Boehner decided to end his career on the Hill, his departure hastened by clashes with ideologues within his own party. Now, in a scorching new memoir, "On the House," Boehner writes that those forces are hurting the country, and threaten the GOP's survival. Boehner talks with "60 Minutes" correspondent John Dickerson about the January 6th insurrection, partisan media, and what he calls "political terrorists" who play to the party base.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

It’s always weird but interesting to see a retired politician (from any party) in interviews etc after retirement because it’s like they suddenly drop any excessive formality or pretense because they no longer have to worry about running for office or how they look or sound to the public. He’s obviously more relaxed & “laid back” in this interview.

He was in the same trap lots of moderate Republicans are in today. If he spoke out too much the crazies would attack him and he’d lose his nomination to an even crazier Republican. Everyone likes to blame politicians, but the fact is that politicians are often handcuffed by their constituents. The problem with the Republican party is that has been hijacked by a group of radical constituents whose minds have been warped by decades of propaganda and fake news from conservative media. They don’t live in reality, they are driven by fear and anger, and they don’t want compromise. There’s no room for Boenher in a party like that.

I finished reading Boehner’s book last night. I enjoyed it and I came away with more respect for him and the office he held. He gave members of the Republican Party a hard time but he did the same to the Democrats. He helped reform the House Bank, Post Office, and Dining room which members were abusing (not paying tabs, bouncing checks, and taking money). He eliminated earmarks. He got the Pope to visit and address Congress. He tried to work with the knuckleheads but they wouldn’t help.

Boehner got in bed with the Tea Party early on because he thought it would invigorate the Republican Party. It's a direct line between the Tea Party to the Trumpies. They are the same disaffected, irrational core. He has to admit his own culpability in the creation of the mess that he helped to create. Yes, it's nice that Boehner condemns tRump's insurrectionism, but it's a little too little, too late. He should have stood up to the lunacy when it started years ago instead of embracing it. Where was he in 2016? Where was he in November 2020? Where was he on 5 January? Easy to condemn things now!

The main thing when I think of Boehner, was when him and Obama were going after the elusive 'Grand Bargain' on the debt \ budget. They apparently were so close to a deal. That's the big problem with people leaving the Republican party who act like they made some grand gesture by saying they don't want to be part of a party that believes in conspiracy theories and such. Since they never changed their actual ideologies, it's not like now they support doing something about racist police officers or anything to help poor people not be poor anymore. So they might as well just stay in the Republican party since they're not helping to solve any actual policy problems.

I like it that Boehner is turning on the GOP and trump but I remember him blocking what President Obama wanted to do morning, noon, and night and he wasn't a likable person at all. I was real happy when he wasn't there anymore.

I appreciate John Boehner’s recognizing the threat that extremists present to a continuing Democracy. Since Trumpers don’t read, I hope some of them will get the Audiobook.

One strong leader is better and more efficient than having hundreds of leaders who all oppose each other. All these opposing parties and complicated procedures where every piece of the machine is too worried about reelection to do what is right is not a good system.

Not unless I missed something, but notice that this "journalist" didn't ask Boehner if he voted for Trump in 2020. He did, which is why he won't call Trump a "political terrorist"; he could be accused of giving material support. But Dickerson didn't even ask him how he voted in 2020.

As skeptical as I am of their motives, I do enjoy hearing what some of these Republicans and former Trump people have to say. They don't care anymore and while it doesn't remove any of their own guilt and responsibility, it is quite entertaining to hear them peel back the rotten layers of their party.

Pope Francis helped JB to wake-up. It would have been preferable to conduct the re-awakening crusade while still in office. Granted he didn't have the strength to undo the wrong, he could have redeemed himself by being an example in just trying to do the right thing.
