Good justification. It's like if some marauding bandits won't listen to reason, you join them and lead them to your village to burn it down because that makes you a leader. But after you're done pillaging with them and have done nothing to redeem yourself feel free to come back and tell the surviving villagers about how those bandits were the worst.

Stephen was too nice when Boehner claimed that Democrats always stick together and Republicans don't. He shouldn't have dropped it. Boehner knew he was spewing nonsense, Colbert could have called him on it more forcefully. Boehner proved he was full of it when he said he had to get out in front of the crazies. Boehner might mean that behind closed doors Republicans bitch and moan more before getting their way. While vocal Democrats will compromise among eachother to get stuff moving . No Dem version of Ted Cruz, Goetz, Newt, or Jim Jordan who probably hold up things and stir trouble even when most other Republicans are down for an idea. So he basically admitted his Party has always been a dysfunctional mess and obstructionist. Colbert should have pushed on that. Seems their was a hard edit in that part of then interview.

It's actually in the training manuals provided by the political parties. Everyone is given a free pass by their parties to pretend to be courageous once they've made it official that they aren't going to seek office again. Ever noticed how little pushback those people get when they do that from their colleagues? It's official party policy to allow it and to allow those who have retired to write books about their experiences.

I think it depends on what you are referring to in terms of "complicity." If you are talking about the rise of the Tea Party and how it opened the door to Trumpism, I disagree, he was a very strict institutionalist leader and those factions were actually what pushed him out. If you are referring to just the general disorder and polarization of the modern congress, I would agree with you, he was there working with Newt Gingrich in the 90s turning the two parties into cohesive, bomb throwing teams that won't work together.
