Stephen was too nice when Boehner claimed that Democrats always stick together and Republicans don't. He shouldn't have dropped it. Boehner knew he was spewing nonsense, Colbert could have called him on it more forcefully. Boehner proved he was full of it when he said he had to get out in front of the crazies. That 2013 shutdown caused real damage to hundreds of federal employees. I was one of them. The Merit Systems Protection Board, which arbitrates fair treatment for employees ended up swamped with forced furlough complaints for over 2 years - that’s how long it took me to appeal a housing allowance decision at an overseas post. I had to pay my own way & support my family on a fraction of my salary. When they finally decided the case in my favor it was too late. We were devastated. All so Cruz could make a useless point. I think it depends on what you are referring to in terms of "complicity." If you are talking about the rise of the Tea Party and how it opened the door to Trumpism, I disagree, he was a very strict institutionalist leader and those factions were actually what pushed him out.
