I really enjoyed this movie- it’s a shame that it wasn’t more popular and successful. My father, who sadly passed away two days after Christmas 2020, also really liked it- he had been a fan of the character when he was a kid (he was born in 1941), and it was something that we were able to both appreciate together. A lot of people criticized this movie unfairly or harshly. Jeremy Jahns, a youtube film critic that I used to have a lot of respect for gave it a nonsensically bad review and included it in his worst films of 2011 list. Hell, I even feel partially responsible for the films negative reputation, I read the books back in 2010 when the movie was getting word around and being a sci-fi fan I was really interested in watching it. But I had a really bad day when I went to see the movie in theaters (mostly by teenage personal drama bullshit), and I just didn’t have a good time with it. But I was able to rewatch the movie thanks to platforms like Redbox and such giving me the opportunity to rewatch it, I had a much better time loved it! I truly feel that this movie is the Flash Gordon of my generation, where a classic hero is adapted in a movie that was both overshadowed and unfairly criticized as bad and outdated, it’s only a matter of time before people discover this fact.

Finally, a positive take on this movie and Edgar Rice Burroughs' tales of adventure, that predates comic books ! Granted, the film has some stop and starts, but overall it gets the job done. Would have loved to see the sequels, and a resurgence of ERB's other stories, like Pellucidar, Carson of Venus, or The Mucker !

It was a great film; the effects were fantastic and the story was classic. The main limiting factor was the marketing and the lack of will on Disney's end to promote the movie. It seems that Disney's acquiring Star Wars and Marvel had more to do with the movie not doing well; Disney didn't want to spread its resources thin to invest in too many IP's. Hence, they killed John Carter off.

Sure, it was a entertaining film and had some good stuff in it, but that doesn't correlate to be an actual GREAT film. The story could've just focus on John Carter arriving on Mars & having a lot of adventures with the Thorks (Green Aliens), we needed just that. There was no need to make a film about 3 sides fighting for the supremacy of the planet & having a Cosmic Cult that destroys Worlds. Not because "people are dumb" and can't focus on the minimal stuff, but because all the concepts on the movie becomes simple & unexplored. Which affects a lot of things in the movie by no having the enough time to explore more on the many civilizations that live on Mars & and the characters that tries to present to us.

I still think that the marketing botched the film. They should have sold it as John Carter of Mars, and emphasised that he was the original source of all the heroic science/fantasy fiction we love. I read some as a kid, but forgotten more than I can remember, but other fellow sci-fi fans who know it, consider the film a good adaptation that is broadly faithful.

One discourse was the "broken man" as a warrior & saviour. John Carter suffered the murder of his wife and child. 2. Another theme was the technology race. Women as warriors and research scientists such as the Princess & not passive objects of male desire. 4. The Therns as agents of power and war, manipulating events & groups behind the scenes, very much like major corporations today. 5. Infanticide practiced by Green Martian Tharks. 6. Gladiator sport as entertainment in Thark culture. 7. Sola enduring a public display of corporal punishment of Thark culture 8. Women as property: the arranged marriage of the Princess & Sab. 9. Tharks overcoming cultural beliefs of "never flying" in order to achieve military victory. 10. Ruling leaders in Thark culture can be subject to a challenge using physical violence to be overthrown as leader. 11. Use of animals as domesticated beasts of burden and pets.

Edgar Rice Burroughs pulp fiction change the world and is hugely responsible for the DC and Marvel superhero's we love today. His John Carter of mars series was set the blueprint for modern sci-fi heroic adventures, and help jump start kids fascination with space and planets. Without ERB I don't if we ever get Superman, Star Wars and others, he was one of a kind.

The original three books in the series were a great arc. Without spoiling it, the ending is both unique for a main character and extremely rewarding if you have gotten an understanding of who John Carter is, by the end of the third book. It fits perfectly.

An awesome movie that critics failed to understand (as usual) and bombed most likely due to bad marketing and the fact that the average movie goer was so stupid that they thought this film ripped of Star Wars and Superman, when in fact the character was the original that those other franchises borrowed from. The critics were indeed harsh. Even some critics I respected from a critical view had even had issues with the movie, a lot of which were dumb reasons. But I don’t necessarily think the average movie going audience disliked the movie for that reason; most who actually have seen the movie tend to generally like it. I really do believe in this case it was just a scenario of both bad marketing which included nods to this being Star Wars and Superman’s inspirations (if the audience went in with that knowledge as shown, the idea of it failing for that reason is flawed), and the fact that the theaters had a lot of competition in the early summer of 2011, which had both the final Harry Potter film still going strong along with the endlessly hyped up 1st Hunger Games movie. With all those more “hip and progressive” style stories in theaters compared to an old fashioned Space Opera/Planetary Romance style story along with marketing that hitched itself to more popular and timeless intellectual properties, it was a recipe for disaster! I am not surprised much people didn’t see it and that the critics who tend to be more inclined to more “hip and progressive” style stories like HP and Hunger Games didn’t like it; but I think this gives it the opportunity for the movie to have a 1980 Flash Gordon style renaissance, where people will look back on the movie and see it in a more popular eye. It up to us who actually liked it to educate these people.

Also, I do agree that the movie was terribly marketed; but I do believe that the movie was also consistently overshadowed a lot and didn’t have any opportunity for it to have a chance at growing when compared to the endlessly hyped up 1st Hunger Games movie and the last Harry Potter film still in theaters by the time of John Carter’s release. I love the 2012 John Carter film. To me, John Carter is a proto Superman, but he's Superman in reverse. Instead of an alien coming to earth, he is an earthman who came to an alien planet. And like the Golden Age Superman, he doesn't fly. But he jumps. There was an asylum movie that was also inspired by John Carter entitled "A Princess of Mars" I just purchased it today and I intend to have a John Carter Double feature, first watching the 2009 "A Princess of Mars" and then, "John Carter".

It is a very good film and could have been a big success if it had been marketed as skilfully as the Star Wars films, or Lord Of The Rings. John Carter of Barsoom. The incomparable Dejah Thoris. The source material, Edgar Rice Burroughs books, are great, for those who read sci Fi. There is no way to portray the images one gets by reading the books. Disney missed the point, Carter has nothing to live for on earth, his character developed through his growing devotion to Dejah Thoris and her native land--see Avatar, Pocahontas, Princess Leia--completely over shadowed by the block buster approach. The fact that John Carter was an unaging man that could naturally, and without effort, astral project to Barsoom, and that he remembers having always been a warrior (and not only that, but a warrior that loves to fight and show his strength), always made me wonder if he was possibly like, the ACTUAL God of War? The Romans and Greeks always associated Mars with their Gods of War (Mars and Ares), and the series has a big theme of John Carter uncovering false Gods. Maybe that's cause he's essentially the Avatar of a real God? He also brings up how Mars is the God of War at the beginning of the first book, and how - as a fighting man - he'd always held that particulad God in high regard. Tinfoil hat theory lol

I loved this movie. It was epic, and the visuals were amazing. However, the marketing was confusing. "John Carter" is what the one sheet (poster) said. It's a one hundred year old book, and the awareness of John Carter is not something that I had, at the time. Disney totally messed up the marketing. They had amazing visuals, BUT, they could have made a slightly smaller movie (and saved a hundred million) while having the same impact. Some of the visuals were over produced. I'm glad that they spent the money, but I wanted to see more, and because they had terrible marketing, and people ONLY concentrated on the amount of money that they spent, it was deemed as a flop. No, it was an enjoyable movie, they just spent too much money, and didn't attract an audience to see it.

Part of me wonders if the real reason the film didn't do well at the box office was because 'John Carter' was a bland name that didn't inspire interest. How could you not mention the Micheal Moorcock, trilogy, tying John Carter to his "Eternal Champion"? The character was "public domain" and Moorcock did violently good work with the premise. I just read the originals recently and Moorcock was better.

But Burroughs, was born in Chicago. And I started reading Moorcock in the '70s from US publishers. But the "IP', on Burroughs work has been reinstated by Disney. And they are F**king it up. They should buy the Michael Moorcock rights. But they also bought "Pellucidar". ,from Edgar Rice Burroughs ,INC. they will fuck that up too. You cant do Burroughs ,or Moorcock, in PG-13 and make money.
