Great video, as usual..! I used to own the 2014 Music Matters mono 33rpm version (yes, excellent)+ i have a 1971 Liberty RVG stereo copy; and now, the new Tone Poet stereo as well (yes, excellent). If my house should burn down, and i have only one minute to decide, i would save, keep, the Liberty RVG copy for sure... ( Life & Energy being more important than detail, tonal balance and "clean" sound) - : “Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, “Listen, mate, life has surface noise.” (John Peel)

Thanks for the informative video Bob! My "take" on the alternate takes is that yes, they are educational as to the recording process. But in the days of streaming and you tube, do we really need the alternate takes on vinyl? I The complete TP Blue Train Release (mono, stereo, and alternate takes) is available for streaming. So I wish the TP stereo is priced like a regular release without the alternate takes.

That a good take I think. Cheers

Bought the mono, and it sounds rich and full. Cut very loud, so there is a lower signal-to-noise ratio. Listened to the stereo via streaming and I found the soundstage to be hollow because of the track balancing vs. instrument proximity. Mono definitely the way to go, despite no extras.

Totally enjoyed the Blue Train album, listen to it for about two days but never played the Mono tracks. Definitely like it better then the RVG version. For some strange reason I collect the Mono versions of any album if it's available but I never play them. I guess when I first got into music and audio equipment in the late 60's I was always taught to make sure you get the Stereo copy.

@dimitriosmetalos2 жыл бұрын
Bob you always dig down to the story like an historian. You have a unique way of storytelling. It is almost a cinematic approach. Do they have the same price (mono & stereo)? Is it the recording or the master that makes an album audiophile in your opìnion? Huge topic for discussion...
@BOBBRADLEYCHANNEL2 жыл бұрын
They are not the same price unfortunately, the stereo is 60 bucks and the mono is around 40. The mastering is a big deal but the recording has to be of high quality to start with. Good musicians, good sounding instruments, great recording gear, expert engineering, and yes great mix & mastering to wrap all that up. It’s a real labor of love .

So, how does it compare with the original? I mean, forgetting that it’s an original, which do you think sounds better?
@BOBBRADLEYCHANNEL2 жыл бұрын
There’s an immediacy with the original pressing that the poet doesn’t have but there is more harmonic contact with the tone poet… it’s a toss up. But I’ll personally reach for the tone poet more I think.
@slistone19402 жыл бұрын
@@BOBBRADLEYCHANNEL makes sense. I have a 1970 repress with the van gelder stamp. I think the instrument clarity and separation is way better with tone poet (not to mention bass). But get what you’re saying about the immediacy.

I am very doubtful with these Vinyl's... Everyone knows that after 2 or 3 plays it cracks. I have Blue Train by Coltrane for almost 40 years in cd, same condition as when I bought it, the sound is good, and it doesn't crack... I don't think the quality is better on vinyl. Ok the object is better than the bad concept of Cds too small etc... But the rest is not, and I know vinyl. I own more than 2000 of them and a colleague of mine also has a huge collection of old Blue Note originals. But today they are unlistenable because he is a musician and I also worked and studied with them by making transcriptions. We bought them all back on CD. Do you listen to your records or is it just an 'object' for you? This kind of 'stuff' is fine in a library but not for listening. You have to live with the technology and musicians like Trane would be happy to have his recordings especially the last ones on which these titles are cut in two... This is my opinion, and many musicians and others share it. You are getting screwed with prohibitive prices for things that are long out of date...

Joel different strokes for different folks … of course I listen to them. Cheers

@@BOBBRADLEYCHANNEL So you understood well. The music is the most important and the support is secondary. But I also understand that it can make people appreciate the musicians even more. I don't judge, it was a question. The old Shellacs also make me this impression, to hear the musicians closer than on USB key. Have a good listen and I wish you all the fun in the world with Trane and all the others.
