Great overview, this is my Constantine as well. In the introduction by Garth Ennis, he mentions how Hellblazer 40 shows an alternate version of Constantine, the one who is a powerful Magus; Ennis says, this is probably what most people thought the book was going to be. To me, after they brought Constantine into the DC Universe, that’s exactly what they did - gone was the tortured Constantine who lived by his wits and a little bit of magic. The Vertigo version was more human and fallible. The new DC version seems like Dr Strange in a trench coat.

Can't wait for Vol. 2, and give me the Carey run after that. So glad DC is giving Constantine the prestige format treatment.

Great review and worth the wait. I was thinking of buy that new Swamp Thing trade but seems I don't have to now. Man, reading this stuff back in the late 80's and 90's. These were my comics it felt like (along with Moore's Swamp Thing, Sandman and a few others). It's great that we now live in an age where we can read these collected like this. Bring on volume 2!

Pre ordered this and got it as soon as it came out. Big fan. In case anyone is wondering, the sandman story collected here (dream a little dream of me) uses the older , non absolute coloring (I compared it with my absolute sandman). Didn’t realize how much a difference it was until I compared them side by side.

Agreed! 'This is my John Constantine,' as well. I have the Ennis omnibus and many of the Delano floppies, but will pick this up! (And Vol. 2 when it comes) Also, I've been busy with work, so hadn't realized your loss- Wish you and your family well!

Thanks for the overview, Omar. I loved this collection, even though I had most of the Hellblazer in TPB. It’s just really well done. My only minor criticism is that I really didn’t think all of that ST content was necessary. Just a couple of issues, maybe with some excerpts, would have been enough. I also wasn’t nearly as into the post-Bronze Age ST stories as many people, so there’s that. Anyway, it’s not much of a criticism when you’re saying that they gave you too much of something. 😅

I've always wanted to read through Hellblazer but I was planning on going the TPB route, in large part due to the Garth Ennis omnibus being creator-centric and I assumed this would be too. But with this mapping (that, correct me if I'm wrong, collects more than the TPBs) I might go the omni route after all. I don't think I would have figured that out without this overview, so thank you!

I love comics that do different things, this is very interesting to me cause a lot of comics have black pages but this one has pages that are other colors like purple and orange, that’s really neat to me! This is an interesting pickle to be in though cause I have the Garth Ennis Omni, so I’d be backtracking when I get this

Hellblazer is my favorite comic book series of all time, and that love started with Original Sins. I have the full new edition TPB collection, but I'll still be getting this. The colors look great, whereas in the TPB they are kind of muted. Also psyched there are all these Swamp Thing issues collected, as I've only read Veich's issues included in the Original Sins new edition TPB.

Great book! Wish I had bought all the TPBs when they were still in print. Hopefully they will go the compendium route at some point in the future!

Thanks for the overview. Do you know if DC will collect everything else in an omnibus? I've always wanted to have Hellblazer, but looking for the tpbs is quite complicated now. I hope they release the 300 in omnibus.
@kfredrichs73592 ай бұрын
i'd love to see a comparison with the pages in the omnibus with the pages in the TPBs. colors look brighter here on whiter pages.
@michaeloffgrid2 ай бұрын
I've still got my old Rick Veitch Swamp Thing TPB's that were printed on off-white matte paper, and the colors there are darker and much richer than they are on these superwhite pages. It wouldn't surprise me if the Constantine TPBs are the same way. I find the choice of paper stock in DC's modern collections to be disappointing, especially for horror comics.

My first exposure to Delano’s work was through Captain Britain when he took over the writing duty from Alan Moore. I think he did quite a great job living up to the successor of that legendary run from GOAT of all time.

I'm hellbent (No pun intended) to get me all of good old Constantine into my collection. The numbered hardcover TPB, (28 volumes) are way too expensive and some of them are pretty much impossible to find. I was going to go in the soft cover route, which would take a lot of time and some of them are 15+ years, therefore not in very good condition.The question is, this is omni volume 1: Are they gonna reprint Ennis stuff in volume or the Ennis won't be reprinted? Should I get the Ennis omni or what?
@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin58932 ай бұрын
Thanks for the review. I really don't get DC's collected editions. I don't like that this is called Hellblazer by Jamie Delano, and have 12 issues of Swamp Thing written by Rick Veitch and that Neil Gaiman Sandman issue. I think it's great that those issues are included, but surely calling it The Complete Hellblazer Omnibus Vol. 1, or something similar would work better?
@ryanamin51852 ай бұрын

I want to get this but i need to create room on my shelf, easier said then done. I do not think Constantine is an a-hole, he's typically only an a-hole to those that deserve that treatment.....and the demons he deals with.

While I'm a big Hellblazer fan, this particular run wasn't really for me. It feels a little more abstract to me, which can work in certain instances. It's just not my taste. But I won't tell someone to not enjoy it. Looking forward to any future Hellblazer omnis. For me the runs before and after Ennis are my least favorite. I believe it was Paul Jenkins after Ennis. But it does feature earlier work of Sean Phillips on art duty. I'm in love with anything Sean Phillips does with writer Ed Brubaker. One of current comics best creative teams, in my opinion. Regardless of agree or disagree, everyone go read some comics! Be well!
