John Corneal, EAA 374566, really wanted to fly a jet, so he responded in true EAA fashion: He built one. Learn more about his recently completed SubSonex personal jet in the February 2018 issue of EAA Sport Aviation.

Really cool aircraft and idea, I am sure sooner than later technology will reach the point where a larger 2 seater version will be able to be powered by such a small engine

That is such a gorgeus plane, how did you come up with the paint scheme, i love it. Fantastic.
@eljuano285 жыл бұрын
I did a very down and dirty sortie cost analysis of this vs another EAB aircraft in a similar price range, but powered more conventionally, based on the scenario of a trip from Scottsdale to Burbank and back, and without accounting for fixed costs, if you pick and choose your fuel stops well, it's only mildly more expensive to operate the subsonex than that piston single. It's lack of fuel to make the whole trip without a couple/few stops means the total time is also fairly close to even, so like every other aircraft, you have to figure out what the mission is before you choose what to build. I think for it's given mission, the "mini A-10" is a triumph! ..., I'll be choosing something that carries more, further, but that doesn't take anything away from the cool factor of the "almost any man's jet." Maybe someday, my mission requirements will change.
@PiefacePete46 Жыл бұрын
@el_juano : Sooo... for the same trip, similar cost, similar trip time. No brainer, go for the jet and arrive all buzzed-up, with a goofy grin like a teenager at a strip club! 😋 🥴

Congrats on a gorgeous machine, beautifully executed. I agree - best paint scheme so far! Two questions. 1- does the jet engine prevent you from certain fields due to noise regs (I.e. Does it fall into traditional Chapter 2, 3, other, etc or is it exempt?) 2- anything about the design preclude installing a ballistic recovery system?
@jk941106 жыл бұрын
He's got a BRS installed you can see it in one of the shots and the handle in the panel.

For sure i can say its a very nice job. But i still wondering in what principles based to build it. It's not quite simply even some can handle the metal sheet like paper or so. Really love it.

The truly personal jet... at a reasonable price! Anyone price out a nice Corvette lately? I would say this airplane is in the right ballpark. Very cool. Maybe someday if I get far enough out from this cancer to get an initial medical so I can then use BasicMed (it doesn’t help those of us who have never had a medical and would need a special issuance). Any way to make a Light Sport jet?
@thewizard24655 жыл бұрын
hey man,sorry to hear about the cancer! i hope you are well and have beat it! would be nice to hear back from you with a update! if not,i understand,stay safe bro.

@ccwynn66576 жыл бұрын
Congratulations! This is not on my bucket list but probably should be. How many hours does the little turbojet engine run between overhauls? How old are you? Any medical issues?Do you need a sports pilot license or some kind of jet license?--CCW
@markg44595 жыл бұрын
TBO (time between overhauls) is only 300 hrs. Not very long. I think you'd likely have to ship the engine back to Chech Rep. for rebuild. Not seen a price for that...may be too early in the lifetime of these aircraft.
@NightSky7774 жыл бұрын
Good question, GA/PP License or ok just to have Light Sport license?
@nocalsteve3 жыл бұрын
You need at least a PPL-ASEL, and since it’s a jet you also have to pass a type-rating check ride.

I’ll consider two, one in red the other in shiny gloss black. Please also add a 20mm Gatling gun in the nose and at least 4 sidewinders, 2 under each wing. Oh, yeah, you might wanna change out the jet for a slightly more powerful one, since I’m adding a bit of extra weight with my extra options.
@mill271211 ай бұрын
I can see this having 50 cal to 20mm guns but a sidewinder might be too heavy. You might have to settle with dumb rocket pods instead.
